Turn for the better, showing off and let’s go wave sailing are all great Peter Hart videos that kept giving me those extra tips during my windsurfing progression.

Coupled with tips from friends and instructors as well as reading the odd article, there has always been plenty of help out there for the aspiring windsurfer. Now in the digital age this has never been more so, so why spend time making a set of tuition videos?

Set is the key word. There are still some great videos out there, in DVD and digital format but there are often quite a few gaps. Windsurfing doesn’t begin with the carve gybe, nor does it begin with planing. There is much more to it and I wanted to try and put the same focus into teaching the beginning of windsurfing as into teaching higher levels.

By having it online and easy to access it will hopefully open it up to as many people as possible from total beginner, to instructor, to someone who is looking for what to learn next. But rather than talk too much about what’s coming I’ll tell you a little of the location I filmed it in.

If I had a second home town Bitez/Ortakent would be it, and from a windsurfing point of view it was fundamental in getting me to where I am now. On a holiday in 1998 was the first time I got in the footstraps just outside Bitez bay and was also the first place I got a job as an overseas instructor in 2003. It was where I did my “first” of many of the moves in this set of videos. I worked for five years in this area and it’s hard to beat as a place that caters for every level of windsurfer.

I’ll leave you with a little taste of what’s to come and what Neilson Ortakent is like. On a light, sunny barmy weekend, Simon Bornhoft and ten Exmouth windsurfers, went to work on some core windsurfing skills. Breaking down the key principles of the sport, SB covered how to improve gybes, inspire yourself to try duck gybes and improve general board handling. With plenty of top tips to work on for the remaining season, SB will be looking to return to Exmouth to move everyone onto another level in the future. ”Thanks to everyone who joined us on Saturday. It was a really good atmosphere and enthusiastic crew. Exmouth is a great windsurfing location and I look forward to seeing everyone again soon! Until the ‘Look, lean and lever with that rig!”

Lemnos

Sportif have a new flat water and waves destination – Lemnos in the Greek Islands. Direct flights are still available for the peak holiday period and up till October from the UK and a choice of accommodation from budget self catering studios to luxury, apartments, villas and hotel accommodation. The centre has been established for 15 years and offers the latest kit rental and instruction. Families, mixed ability groups and mixed sports groups ie windsurfing and kitesurfing all have plenty of space. This is peak wind season for the Greek Islands too, so you can be sure of the weather.

Lemnos

Keros Bay is a wide, natural bay on the east side of Lemnos and extending some 4km from North to South. In the north, where the Windsurf and Kitesurf centre is based, the smooth flat water is accessible directly from the beach with cross shore winds providing a huge freeride, slalom and freestyle area. To the south are bump and jump conditions with a separate wave beach with onshore winds. The prevailing Aegean winds are from the north east, blowing steadily from now to October averaging between 15 and 27 knots most days.

The centre offers the latest equipment with all new boards from Starboard and RRD, Severne rigs, plus top quality kitesurfing equipment from RRD, Airush, Crazyfly and Slingshot.

This is a fantastic spot to learn to windsurf or kitesurf – with the shallow water, beginners and launch area right next to the centre. From here you can get directly into the full strength of the wind within minutes for super slalom conditions. At the other end of the bay, the Wave beach provides 0.5- 2.5m waves – ideal for learning to wave sail – right through to 4m in late season.

Boards also caught up with coaching duo to find out more about last weekend on the water: 

Last weekend saw Phil and Danielle from Getwindsurfing.com spending the strong winds with the huge windsurfing crowd around Eastbourne on Friday.  By the end of the day, Danielle watched Phil fully powered on her 3.3 and 66litre twin, photos can be seen here as a result.

Saturday they were at Hove Lagoon Coaching, seeing their students progress in the conditions off the front, which were very windy, wavy and sunny, a brilliant way to experience waves for the first time or improve their techniques in the challenging conditions.

Following a great weekend, Phil and Danielle have spotted the forecast and will be running a last minute Blasting, Jumping and Gybing session at Hayling Island this Saturday.  They have planned the morning at the popular flat water spot of Langstone Harbour (Esso Garage), a great spot for intermediates and advanced to practice their skills, followed by the afternoon off the front to experience the swells and excitement Hayling Island has to offer.
