In more speedy news British slalom champion Ant Baker was showing off his 2013 North Warps this week; and speaking of showing off looks like the girls are having more than a little bit of fun in Maui here! We are sure yet more showing took place in the Liverpool SWA event last weekend too, check out the gallery  and report on the event from Tushingham team rider Jo Wright.

Other big news this week was that it looks like there will be another edition to the PWA calendar in 2013, with Cape Town hosting the final round of the PWA Wave World Tour!

Empowering Women and Giving Back in Cabarete

Cabarete, Dominican Republic July 15, 2011. The Butterfly Effect will land in Cabarete on July 28-30th, encouraging girls and women of all ages to get out on the ocean and show the world they that can surf with the best of them. The event is fun and non-competitive, and it aims to instill self-confidence and a love for the ocean in women of all skill levels. Local and visiting women will gather on the beach of Cabarete to complete a 4km downwind ride from Cabarete Bay to Playa Encuentro. The women will be windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking or stand-up paddling. The event includes safety and stretching sessions, as well as food and gear from local sponsors, and fund-raising for local charities.

The Butterfly Effect began in Hawaii in 2007. The founder, Tatiana Howard, is an avid water woman who enjoys windsurfing, surfing, kite surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, and tow in surfing. This is the 5th year the event has taken place and the third year that Cabarete has hosted a Butterfly Effect. Since its inception, it has flown to Brazil, New Zealand, France, Hood River Oregon, Dominican Republic, Germany, Italy, Israel, Tahiti, Fiji, and Australia. The founder believes that water sports provide a healthy and fun lifestyle that give those who participate in them great happiness and self-confidence. She has been fortunate to be involved in these sports and wants to share and instill the lessons she has learned with women worldwide.

Fundraising efforts associated with the Butterfly Effect will go to the DREAM Project. The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project is a US 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides quality education for all children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic. Our butterflies will participate with some of the DREAM Project kids in a group beach cleanup within Cabarete Bay.

Registration for the event will be held at Cabarete Beach Houses on Thursday July 28th from 6:30pm–9:30pm. The event will begin at 11am on Saturday July 30th. All participants will meet at Vela Cabarete. A raffle and silent auction benefitting the event and The Dream Project will be held during the closing ceremony at Nikki Beach Cabarete on Saturday July 30th at 8pm.

Shawna Cropas’s Aloha Windsurfing Clinics and Tatiana Howard’s Butterfly Effects come together to create a unique women’s only windsurfing instructional and SUP fitness event the week prior to the Maui and Fiji Butterfly Effect. There is a whole new breed of women who maintain well being, fitness and lifestyle solely devoted to the ocean. They are Waterwomen who have traded in all social norms for fins, boards and ocean time. Shawna and Tatiana are combining their coaching and ocean skills along with their personal philosophies… Aloha spirit speaks of joyful openness, sharing and ‘accomplishing goals to achieve any state of mind or body that you desire in the present moment.’ The Butterfly Effect encourages us to have a positive result or change of something in our own lives which ripples and reaches out to others. The combination of the Aloha Clinics’ and The Butterfly Effects’ goals extend out in order to exchange Shawna’s and Tatiana’s knowledge and love for water sports and ocean living through instruction and participation. They will be running their first Aloha Waterwomen Windsurfing Clinic together on Maui April 26th to May 2nd and running another all ladies only windsurfing clinic on Fiji starting May 28th to June 4th.

Safari Lodge located on an small island off the northern tip on Fiji which hosted the worldwide water woman movement celebrating and promoting women and ocean sports.

The Butterfly Effect brings women together in a non-competitive gathering celebrating community and love of the ocean, while instilling confidence in women of all ages and skill sets.  The Fiji Butterfly Effect gives back to the local community by donating new school supplies to the local schools.  Over the years The Butterfly Effect has expanded from just doing one-day downwind events.  Now they do holiday trips (open for all intermediate riders) and clinic trips (open for all skill levels, even first timers).

The Butterfly Effect Fiji Expedition was the 2^nd trip organized, but first ever clinic trip.  Last year The Butterfly Effect went to Tahiti with intermediate to professional riders.   This year it had a completely different vibe with a wide variety of levels making everyday rewarding and full of ambition to achieve new goals. Windsurfing in Fiji was more than ideal especially being based at Safari Lodge. Safari Lodge is a great place to have all levels because of the flat water, shallow sandy bottom, warm inviting waters, and friendly faces.  When the wind picked up the ladies stepped outside of their doorstep and onto the white sand beach! There was no time wasted when the wind picked up.  The girls were constantly in the water practicing. They had great conditions the whole week with lovely winds of 15 – 20 knots. We had amazing instructors along helping out and the women improved quickly with the all day, every day water action agenda!

The upcoming one-day downwind event as well as trip option for all those who want to discover Dominican Republic will be happening August 7^th.
