Winter Windsurfing

The up-coming weekend, February 18-20th is expected to be interesting for those who are going to Haapsalu, Estonia to watch or participate in Winter Windsurf European Cup (WWEC) 2011 second event and Aloha ice challange. First event took place in Kaunas, Lithuania in January and race happened in all three disciplines – slalom, course race and freestyle.

There were 5 events previous season; all of them in Slalom discipline. For course racing it was either not possible to mark a normal track or the wind was not strong enough. Last year’s European Cup in Slalom discipline went to Latvian racer Aleksandrs Leontjevs. This season we hope to arrange both Slalom and Course Race to find out who is going to be the new European Cup holder.

The Winter Windsurfing European Cup is organized by Aloha in cooperation with Winterwindsurf.com and Estonian Windsurfing Association.

The next WWEC event is expected in Finland, Saimaa, which will be held right before WISSA (ice and snow sailing world championship) 2011 – an event for a week. 10 days, 7 sports, over 100 competitors.

The 4th WWEC event took place in Latvia, Pļaviņas last weekend and also counted as the Latvian National Championship . Winter windsurfers from Latvia and Lithuania participated in ‘WWEC 2010 Mežezers’ and had all sorts of fun in the Mežezers sports complex.

Some riders had packed their course racing kit but unfortunately the wind wasn’t strong enough for the thick layer of snow that covered Lake Odzes. The conditions for slalom discipline were ok, and even a snowstorm didn’t stand in the way on the first day . There were 9 races on a figure-of-eight course.

On the second day there was no wind for winter windsurfing but instead downhill skiing fun race was organised where everybody including families and friends took part.

‘WWEC 2010 Mežezers’ supporters: Ice board producer Hiberna, sports complex Mežezers, Latvian Windsurfing association, Red Bull, Rip Curl. Winners got beautiful prizes (hats with WWEC logo) from Quiksilver.

The overall results of WWEC 2010 before the last event this season are published at www.winterwindsurf.com. First four places currently are divided among Latvians – the first position belongs to Edgars Liepiņš, but with few points missing, the second is Jānis Preiss and the third is Aleksandrs Ļeontjevs.
