Boards catches up with technique guru Jem Hall, as he reflects on a busy summer and looks forward to a (fingers crossed!) windy autumn and 2013 clinics.

Rhodes reflection:

I am just back from my from 10th Anniversary of coaching clinics in Rhodes and off to Brandon Bay, Ireland next week for my WaterPerson (WP) clinics there. Prasonisi gave us a few days of very light winds until the hairdryer came back on and gave us a fine send off, hats off to the crew for being focussed, fun and most of all relaxed about the delay in the wind, as we all know that there are no guarantees in life and even in Rhodes the wind needs a breather sometimes.

Rhodes crew

Autumn action:

Since my return it has been great to get some autumn action in and enjoy conditions around my local breaks, and also on a road trip down to Camber Sands. There is something about the colder weather, the rain and changeable conditions that seems to excite and inspire me, and yes there is no place like home : )

Jem Hall enjoying his new RRD and Ezzy set up on home shores

Toys, toys, toys – we love em:

During my ocean realignment on my home turf I have had the opportunity to really get to know my new toys and I must say I am loving my new Ezzy Panther Elites and the New RRD Wave Cult Quads.

The 4 battened Elites are lighter, easier power and more neutral for rides, gybes and style and really allow you to throttle the power on or off, yet they are still strong and with a huge wind range and a massive top end.

Now that I have had some quality testing time on my New Cult Quads, and in a range of conditions, I am happy to say that I have them dialed in and am really appreciating their virtues. It is also worth noting that not only am I enjoying them but so too are the people I lend them to in order to test them and provide me with valuable insight, same goes for the Elites. The feedback thus far on the RRD Cult Quads is that they are earlier to plane, have more wind range and a livelier / faster ride. Due to the narrower tails and increased tail rocker, with more vee, they are looser and now with more drive too. Yesterday saw my onshore wave riding performance definitely go up a notch – I LOVE THEM! Get in touch if you want to discuss or test either of the above.

Jem Hall in action and looking forward his 2013 clinics

Seasprite Sports introduce one of RRD’s highest selling ranges, the RRD Twin Tip V2 – which is seen as a reference freestyle board.

As the level of freestyle performance is redefining the word ‘windsurfing’, RRD’s custom factory has committed to redesigning two new progressive shapes that represent this change. The shapes are modern, compact, lightweight, easy to plane and pop in the blink of an eye. The new Twin Tip V2s are simply a new tool to express your desire to write a new page in freestyling, and they are a whole lot faster than their predecessors.

Shorter outlines on both boards compared to the previous versions, the 90 features a much narrower width compared to 88 lts V1. This reduced lengths allows the boards to be popped easier and then thrown around for double manouvers. Much thicker in the tail, the new twintips V2 are easier to plane and reach top speeds, an essential for new school manouvers. The new deck shape with their highly recessed area allows a better grip and control of the board while riding on choppy water.

RRD team rider Adam Sims said: “After 3 months of testing I can safely say the new board is like no other freestyle board on the market; it is fast, it pops high, it feels light under your feet, it carves well and it is controllable through sliding rotations, in chop and in the air. The major changes to the board have really made it very exciting but more important is that it is extremely current and fits in well with all the modern trends of the latest freestyle board; being shorter with sharper rails and a more radical outline. It is a huge step on from the classic TwinTip shape that RRD is famous for and an impressive step in the right direction.”

The range currently includes a 90 and a 100L model, each tooled up with MFC Powerbox Freestyle fins of the right length to slide to your heart’s content.

More details on www.robertoriccidesigns.com . The Twin Tip V2 is available now from your nearest legendary RRD dealer, catch it if you can – check out www.seaspritesports.com for your list of retailers.

Seasprite Sports introduce the Hard Core Wave LTD Single V4 to RRD’s comprehensive new wave board line. These boards are ready for sharp turns and control and with this in mind RRD have produced a hi-performance wave-riding machine that satisfies their most demanding riders and customers that usually look to custom boards for riding powerful and steep waves, or staying in control in high winds. The Hardcore wave V4 is the definitive answer to those riders that do not wish to compromise on sharpness of turns and want to be at the right time in the right place on the wave. The Single fin set-up allows the boards to have looser bottom turns and very sharp precise top turns, whilst maximizing grip and control with that classic feel.
The new Wave Cults V4 are completely re-designed shapes. This line of boards boasts speed, control and perfect turns, both front and backside. Together with their ”Hardcore Wave Quad V4 LTD sisters” they complete the range of new innovative wave boards shapes for ”everyday conditions” all over the world. Sharp, fast, instinctive and very sensitive to footsteering these boards will never let you down. Whether the wind is gusty or the waves are mushy they will give you the looseness AND grip that you require to rip. They also excel in firing conditions and have the widest range of wave usage in the RRD collection. The Quad fin set up allows the boards to have looser bottom turns and very sharp precise top turns.

The Cult Quads will provide you with speed and turnability yet with the extra grip provided by the Quad fins you also get the early planing and upwind ability so often required to get you out the back and catching more waves. These rippers come in a full sandwich Limited Edition construction and in volumes of 75, 83 and 92 litres with respective widths of 56, 58 and 60cms, and lengths from 230 – 232.

Available in early August with prices TBA from your nearest legendary RRD dealer. http://seaspritesports.com/dealers.php
