Boards catches up with the only Brit to make it in the Red Bull Storm Chase, Robby Swift. We find out more about that push loop forward, breaking boards and why he’s already having an even smaller sail made!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-48272" title="Robby Swift (UK) - Action" src="http://cdn2.coresites.mpora.com/boards/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/P-20130129-00026_News-613x408.jpg" alt="Robby Swift.
Where were you when you found out the chase was on?

I was in San Francisco airport on my way back from Maui to Chile.

Did you immediately think it would actually happen this time, or were you still relaxed?

I had my doubts as so many had been cancelled before but I know we need to finish three missions before June so we would have to go sooner or later. It was a very good call in the end!

Robby Swift. Image credit John Carter/Reb Bull Content Pool

How was your journey over?

Awful! Santiago, Panama, Houston, San Francisco, Maui for eight hours, Denver, Frankfurt, Dublin.

What were conditions like when you first got there?

Ridiculous. I didn’t think we would be able to sail at all. I could hardly walk down the beach.

Have you sailed Brandon much before? How did these conditions compare?

Yes many times for BWA (back in the day) and then the PWA events that happened there. It was actually pretty fun sailing in one heat, when it was only about 50knots. The heats where it was 60-70 knots were ridiculous. It was scary! I love Brandon Bay, there are so many options to sail there in all different wind directions.

What equipment were you using?

I used a 75L single thruster and my 3.4 Combat. I also borrowed a 2.5 custom sail cut down from an old 3.2 Combat from Rob Jones for one heat. I could hardly even sail on that!

Robby Swift. Image credit John Carter/Reb Bull Content Pool

Please try and describe how insane it was to be sailing in 70 knots?

It was 50-70knots! It’s hard to describe how hard it was. I couldn’t walk down the beach with my gear. Rob had to help me every time. I didn’t think I would even be able to waterstart. It wasn’t that hard to waterstart in the end but sailing along, I felt like the sail would rip from my hands at any time. I was afraid to do even the smallest jump as I thought the wind would just whip the gear out of my hands. Sometimes you would be sailing along, completely out of control, and you would see a gust up ahead with water flying everywhere and just think: how am I going to survive that?

What was the best thing you pulled off do you think? and how did the judges score it?

I somehow managed to pull off the best push loop forward of my life. It was insane. I had a slight lull on that run out. It was probably only about 50 knots, and I had just landed a huge backloop. I had told everyone that I wanted to do a push forward and they all laughed at me, so when I saw that ramp I said to myself: you had better do it now! I launched into the air, much higher than usual with the insane wind, and did the push loop. I got scared after that and almost didn’t sheet in for the forward, but then I said just go for it, and threw all caution to the wind, so to speak. Anything could have happened. I don’t want to think about what would have happened if a gust would have hit me at that moment. I spun round surprisingly in control and spotted my landing from way up on the air. I knew it would be hard to hold on so I slipped my front thumb around from on top of the boom to underneath so I had the boom in a death grip. I almost over rotated but somehow had the presence of mind to sheet out completely to stop the rotation and just landed completely flat. It buckled my knees and snapped the board. It was probably the hardest landing of my life but it felt very good!

The judges all gave it an instant 10. They said there was no deliberation. It was the highest scoring move of the event so I was happy I got up the guts to do it!

THAT push loop forward – at 30secs!

How will you approach things differently for the next storm?

I am definitely taking a 3.0! Robert Stroj, the NeilPryde designer is making me one as we speak.

Who’s your bet on for the overall winner of the chase?

I still fancy my own chances. You have to don’t you, if you want to win! I beat everyone in the Ireland chase on jumping by quite a long way. I hardly did any wave rides though as I missed almost all of my second heat with the broken board, and the first and last heats I did were so windy that I simply couldn’t bottom turn.

Brawzinho would be another favorite, and Victor. If the wind is a little more manageable, I think those two have a lot more to offer than we saw in the first chase!

Wishing Robby and the other guys lots of luck for the next storm, whenever it may be. You can follow all the action here on Boards of course.

Over the weekend Storm Chase plans went into full swing, with sailors, judges and organisers making their way form the far corners of the globe to Brandon Bay in Ireland for the first storm chase.

It was a close choice between Brandon Bay and Magheroarty in Northern Ireland, but as the storm came through further south than some expected it just had to be Brandon.

Competitors are currently readying themselves and conditions are already ramping up with winds blowing over 100mph! Skippers meeting is about to take place, so we should know more details very soon.

Friday 25th January

Competitors are fixed: Brawzhino, Dany, Victor, Bouj, Swifty, Julien, Thomas, Kenneth, Leon and Josh are on their way to Ireland.

More details to follow, but we can confirm that the Red Bull Storm Chase will finally complete their first mission this weekend in Ireland! Their Facebook page has just confirmed the decision and we will share more details with you very shortly!

Ireland Location Info from Red Bull:

Ireland NW Coast

Ireland is known for heavy storm surf and howling winds. The west coast offers plenty of options for all wind directions to run Red Bull Storm Chase in x-shore conditions with huge waves.

The ragged coastline is ideal for great camera angles and offers good launching abilities for riders and Sea-Doos.

The crew has good knowledge about the place and can expect top support from the locals in terms of choosing the right spot.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURES

AIR (JAN-MAR):

5-12°C

WATER (JAN-MAR):

10°C

Spot Options

Magheroarty
One of the windiest places of the country and one of the best spots to run the Storm Chase in SW-W winds. The reef on the top of the bay offers big down the line conditions with cross to cross-offshore winds, while the inside and the bottom end of the bay still has plenty of jumping potential.

Belmullet
Further down the coast this spot is known for howling winds from southerly directions. Belmullet is a beachbreak with reefs on eather side of the beach. The exposed position picks up any kind of swell.

Easky
If the wind turns from south to more westerly direction, Easky comes to life, a reefbreak not very far from Belmullet, that offers perfect down the line conditions.

Brandon Bay
Former PWA wave spot, where we can find the right break for almost any wind direction within a couple of kilometers. The bay allows perfect camera angles with stunning backgrounds.

Weather

Short intervals of sun are interchanged with windy and rainy weather. The Gulf Stream provides the west coast with very mild conditions. Temperatures may drop below 10°C in case of arctic air by strong N’ly winds.

There’s a large preference for gale force winds in October and November. With a strong west circulation on low latitudes, several storm depressions can reach the west coast. However, months pass by without a significant gale.

Ireland has a very favourable position on the east side of the Atlantic. During a gale waves can build up to 8 meters, sometimes even more at exposed coasts. After a period of strong W’ly winds significant and sorted swell should run into the region.

Check out more details on the Red Bull page here.

Another eventful week in the world of windsurfing has flown by! The competition is still going in Miami as RS:X competitors get close to the winner takes all final race, follow the progress of Nick, Bryony, El Carney, Izzy Hamilton and more here. Of course this week was dominated by another competition, the much awaited Red Bull Storm Chase, which hit Ireland early this week. Check out all the action here and we will have brand new interview with the only Brit to make the chase, Robby Swift, very soon too!

The week started off with an amazing video from Max Rowe in Brazil, as well as footage from a secret speed spot! Though temperatures are not finally on the up, we had a few more ice and snow windsurfing videos for you too here.

Ant Baker took advantage of the slightly warmer weather and took out his brand new North and Fanatic slalom set up out for a spin, just before North Sails released the official video and new information on the very same sail.

Another top slalom racer also looking to get ready for the BSA season is Ross Williams, who will be hosting some training and warm up clinics over at the OTC Puravida centre in Weymouth.

Our final note this week goes to Andy ‘Buzz’ Buchanan, another incredible windsurfer who sadly left us this week. RIP Buzz, hope you’re ripping it up with Mikey.

We will start this week’s round up with the most recent and possibly most exciting news of the week: Red Bull Storm Chase is coming to Ireland! Whilst the first storm has finally hit, we are still taking time to take in the loss of Mikey Clancy and reflect on how his death can help awareness of mental health issues.

Earlier in the week Neilson announced their schedule of 2013 clinics, with Peter Hart and Sam Ross both providing some must attend coaching weeks at some of Neilson’s top centres. On the coaching front, Matt Pritchard also shared some of his best jumping tips online.

With all the snow and freezing temperatures this week many of you have taken to the water, frozen or not, to get your windsurfing fix. The Ianovated guys have also been out, testing their super warm suit in even more challenging conditions!

Stay tuned for more Storm Chase news, we will cover the event on more detail over on our sister site Boardseeker so be sure to check there for the latest updates. For those hitting the water this weekend have an incredible time, it looks like a few locations are going to be going off!

Looking forward to 2013 competition there has already been a few rumours of more PWA venues to be added to the calendar, and now we learn that after an unsuccessful 2012 the Red Bull Storm Chase will continue into the new year, which certainly gives us all something to look forward too!

It is great to see not only the top level windsurfers, but also the up and coming stars, including the young Alex Blackmore that has just signed to team QSW.

Of course we can’t leave without mentioning that this week Boards has been all about freewave tests, with the complete line up of reports now here online make sure you provide your comments, feedback and opinions on all boards tested using the comments at the bottom of each post.

Sadly the Red Bull Storm Chase failed to take off this year as a good enough storm did not blow through, but the good news if the competition will continue next year, so fingers crossed we get an epic competition soon!

Red Bull Storm Chase, will it happen in 2013?

The Red Bull Storm Chase will continue into 2013 after the calm last storm season made it impossible to run any action. Starting on January 10th the most-challenging windsurfing contest of all time will return to finish what it started in last August: Hunting down three massive storms to find one storm windsurfing champion after fierce duels of man vs. man vs. nature.

The ten participants Marcilio Browne (BRA), Daniel Bruch (GER), Ricardo Campello (VEN), Victor Fernandez Lopez (ESP), Boujmaa Guilloul (MAR), Philip Köster (GER), Kai Lenny (USA), Robby Swift (GBR), Julien Taboulet (FRA), and Thomas Traversa (FRA) now benefit from time off over the holiday period to prepare for the restart. From January 10th the sailors will be on standby for the first of two contest periods.

The contest format remains the same: Ten riders compete in the first mission. Six of them advance to mission number two. In the final mission the top four riders will battle for the crown. But this time the spectacle will be split into two parts in accordance with the main world storm seasons. Between January 10 and March 22, 2013, the sailors will be on standby to hunt down two massive storms at the seven previously nominated destinations: Brittany (FRA), Cape Hatteras/US East Coast (USA), Galicia (ESP), the south west coast of Iceland, the north west coast of Ireland, Omaezaki at the south east coast of Japan, and the north west coast of Tasmania (AUS). “Statistically we have two main global storm seasons: January until March and July until September. That’s why we decided to split the waiting period into two parts”, Red Bull Storm Chase Sports Director Klaas Voget on the new twist to the concept. “After a four-month break in spring we’ll continue the chase in mid-July to hunt down the final storm for the ultimate showdown.”

From July 22, 2013, the top four sailors will decide the champion in the final mission at one of the Red Bull Storm Chase destinations. To catch raging conditions the participants have to once more be flexible to the max during the two holding periods with just 48-hours to mobilise on-site before the next storm strikes.

Contest Period I: January 10 – March 22, 2013 (2 missions)

Contest Period II: July 22 – September 10, 2013 (1 final mission)

What happens if any of the ten chosen riders drop out of the Red Bull Storm Chase?

The answer is that one of the substitutes will move into the spot.

Waiting patiently for his call is Simmer sponsored rider Ben Proffitt.

Here’s what he has to say on the Storm Chase website -

MY MOTIVATION FOR THE CHASE

Storm chasing is what most windsurfers in Europe live for! When that low pressure pops up on the weather map sicky’s get pulled, wives and girlfriends get stood up to make a date with a big fat mother of a storm that will take your breath away and give you the biggest blow you’ve ever had. This is what I live for and I want to go on a date with a big fat mother and get it on film…

Bring it on!

Keep in the loop by visiting the Red Bull Storm Chase site here

Hot off the press we can confirm that Britain’s Saskia Sills has won yet another world title, this time the RS:X Youth World title at the ISAF Youth Worlds.

Saskia Sills takes gold

“I can’t quite believe it! It’s such a shock but such a great feeling, I’m over the moon,” enthused Sills. “My aim entering the regatta was to try and finish within the top 10 and to gain as much experience as possible as it’s my first Youth Worlds and only my third proper event on the RS:X board. I don’t think it’s hit me yet as to how big this event actually is and what it means to medal here, I’m sure it soon will though and I can’t wait for tonight!”

Sills, who won the U17 class RS:X European title earlier this month, went into today’s only race with a guaranteed silver medal in the bag and needed to finish within the top 13 to secure the world title. Following a 15th in her penultimate race yesterday (Thursday 19 July), the pressure could have easily mounted on the youngest member of RYA Volvo Team GBR.

“At the beginning of the week I started off really well but as the week went on it got very tough. Yesterday I had a bit of a shocker in the final race and made it a lot harder for myself – I couldn’t sleep last night which I’m sure was down to nerves. Everyone was congratulating me this morning before the race had even started which was a bit strange as I still had a job to do.

“I was so pleased when I crossed the finished line, it was a very stressful race,” said Sills. “At one point I was going round the top mark in 13th with the people behind right on my tail which was when I soon realised I needed to pull my finger out. When I returned to the shore it was a great feeling. I’m now looking forward to the closing ceremony and celebrating the Nations Trophy with the rest of RYA Volvo Team GBR,” said Sills.

Congratulations to Saskia and we cannot wait to hear more about the victory on Boards.

This week was of course dominated by PWA news, firstly all the highlights from PWA Gran Canaria then the news that Iballa Moreno and Philip Koester took further victories in PWA Tenerife too. Check out the Boardseeker action with brilliant videos from each day thanks to Alfie Hart.

During the competition the final 10 sailors were announced for the Red Bull Storm Chase, with Robby Swift in the mix with some of the best in the world. Ben Proffitt didn’t quite make it, but is nicely placed in 11th to step in should there be any injuries or sailors unable to make it…we’re sure we WILL see Proffitt in action in a force 10, potentially along with 12th placed Kenneth Danielsen who is probably the sailor most physically suited to the ballistic winds!

What does it feel like in the eye of a raging storm? The 2006 Red Bull Storm Chase Europe created the concept of windsurfing genuine storm conditions. This time it’s going global. By hunting down three massive storms anywhere in the world, the 10 best athletes will battle for the crown of ultimate storm windsurfer.

The contest format is simple: 10 riders compete in the first mission. Six of them advance to mission number two. In the final mission the top four riders will battle for the ultimate Storm Chaser’s crown. To guarantee raging conditions, Red Bull Storm Chase 2012 will be mobile to the max, with a four month holding period and just 48 hours to mobilise riders and global contest crew on-site before the storm strikes. The starting flag goes up when the winds exceed 10 Beaufort (54 knots / 100 kmh / 62 mph).

Sailor registration open until 28th June.

Online voting, 10 short listed sailors picked to compete 2nd July – 15th July

Competition is on! 1st August – 30th November

So, who’s involved? 80 sailors are already registered, including current world champion Philip Koester, but the Brits and the Irish are putting up a strong show too, with many of the countries best getting involved and needing your support to get them into the final 10.

Current BWA tour leader Phil Horrocks, Chris ‘Muzza’ Murray, Adam Lewis, Dan Gardner and Mikey Clancy are all hoping to make it into the final show down, Boards finds out more from the boys about why they deserve a spot and what the competition could entail.

Phil Horrocks at Rhosneigr.

Name: Phil Horrocks

Home Spot: Rhosniegr

Spot recommendation: I would like to see it hit the mainland UK shores, usually the further north you go the wilder it gets, so if it’s not Rhosniegr then heading to the outer Hebrides, on north coast of Scotland can have it pretty epic. I guess if we’re looking at places with Storm force 10 winds we’re looking at side/side onshore spots where the jumping will be incredible, so you have to think of a spot that can handle conditions like that. Rhosniegr’s a classic for that. It might be good finding epic side offshore waves but in that kind of wind you’re going to be limited for spot choice, I think it’ll be all about going big air!!

Who would you like to see enter: Koester’s the man for big jumps in Europe but there’s a whole bunch of crazy people out there who can make it interesting too!

Phil Horrocks

What would be biggest fear be, if you make it through: I think when it’s as windy as that, when things go wrong, they go wrong super fast!! And it’s usually in the air! In similar winds I once had a pushloop go wrong, and I double pushlooped it! luckily I landed on my back in the water, not on my equipment!

Biggest/craziest day windsurfed: the strongest winds I ever sailed i think was here in Rhosniegr, I remember one time it was off the scale, just spray everywhere, it wasn’t just sand blowing on the beach, it was the whole beach blowing! I was surprised there was any sand left the next day!! The waves were big and gnarly, just keeping the board on the water was an epic challenge, the gear just literally flew away all the time!!

Biggest move landed: I’ve had some good ones in my time, I suppose doubles and pushloop forwards are up there, but when it’s super windy like that it becomes more about control, and moves like huge forwards give you a real thrill!

Why you deserve a spot in the comp: I’m used to sailing in strong winds on the west coast of Wales and more so know for my sailing in South Africa I suppose, where it can be super windy, and I’m usually the guy in the gnarliest spot!! So if you want someone to go big when it’s big, I’m your man!!

Home Spot: Hill Head

Spot recommendation: Gwithian goes off in a storm.

Who would you like to see enter: John Hibbard! Bring him back for his encore!

What would be biggest fear be, if you make it through: Fear ha ha, it’s my middle name!

Biggest/craziest day windsurfed: Gwithian 50 year storm when I was 17 was a massive day, still the biggest waves I have seen hit the UK.

Biggest move landed: Double forward.

Why you deserve a spot in the comp: I would try to entertain everyone all the way along the journey.

Name: Adam Lewis

Home Spot: El Cabezo, Tenerife

Spot recommendation: Hanstrolm in Denmark. For me its one of the best places to storm windsurf in the world, that place goes off!!!

Who would you like to see enter: Koester, I want to see a triple forward!!

What would be biggest fear be, if you make it through: I’m not sure what my biggest fear would be, I guess breaking my gear or not being able to show what I can do. The rest of the stuff is what you look forward to when sailing in mental conditions!

Adam Lewis goes big in Klitmoller

Biggest/craziest day windsurfed: Probably the PWA event in Klitmoller, but sailing Hanstolm in the evening. It was 3.7 totally overpowered and mast and a half plus, super gnarly, but so so much fun!! Every time you were heading out you’d think you were safe, out back and then a North sea monster would explode just next to you! Epic!!!

Biggest move landed: Pushloop forward or stalled double forward.

Why you deserve a spot in the comp: It’s my dream! Ever since I started windsurfing I always looked for windier and windier conditions, it’s those kind of days you look forward to.

Name: Dan Gardner

Home Spot: Rusheen Bay in Galway, west coast of Ireland.

Spot recommendation: Right…now thats a toughy!! We get some pretty made conditions here and there’s plenty of place that can go off on anyone day. Usually up north would be a safe bet as it can manage large swells and wind. Sligo or Donegal would be a winner I reckon.

Who would you like to see enter: Finn Mullen and Robert C Jones would kill it. Mullen is a nut job for big surf. And Rob, he may be small but jaysuz he can sail when its nukin.

What would be biggest fear be, if you make it through: Being underpowered??? Probably breaking gear. Hard not having the gear you want when itis windy and you have no spares…

Dan Gardner

Biggest/craziest day windsurfed: Sailed a 60knot day over a year ago. Only sailed a sheltered beachy but christ…I’m not a small guy, never used a 3.0 before, and it was the most over power I have ever been. Great craic really…

Biggest move landed: Stuck a odd double a while back. One handed goiters, big backies and some massive stalled forwards.

Why you deserve a spot in the comp: It would be good to show everyone that Ireland have some very good sailors out there, going nuts when the conditions are nuts. And I think I would be a good candidate to represent…

Name: Mikey Clancy

Home Spot: Dublin

Spot recommendation: West coast of Ireland definitely has to be on the list. It has been well documented by the Surfing world with a couple of nominations for the Billabong Big Wave Awards this year alone. There are many days with crazy storms and swells which are picture perfect for the storm chase. However, as most of the guys here know the difference in sailing in conditions and waves like this is rugged and difficult.

Who would you like to see enter: I’d like to see all the big names of the sport with a good mix of young talent, people who windsurf all year in these types of conditions too.

What would be biggest fear be, if you make it through: Well, for me it would definitely be my personal safety, I mean the conditions that we will be sent out in are extreme, days you wouldn’t want to put your cat out in. Part of sailing the storm in the survival aspect that you can push yourself again everything that nature is throwing against you. Survival is an innate characteristic we as humans are born with and that’s what the best thing will be about the storm chase, to sail and conquer extreme nature.

Biggest/craziest day windsurfed: The windiest day I ever windsurfed took thee of us to close the van door. I questioned my sanity going out that day.

Biggest move landed: A double loop

Why you deserve a spot in the comp: Unlike many sailor who escape the depths of winter, with college I am forced to be in Ireland throughout winter and storms like we will have for the Red Bull Storm chase is what I lot to sail in. The wetter, windier and wavier the better!!
