The clinic is for intermediates to advanced, and you will get the most out of the week if you’re waterstarting (or very close to it) and in the straps and harness, or at least comfortable with planing and getting near the footstraps. Advanced sailors will be able to seriously improve their gybing and nail some other turns, and they’ll get the opportunity to get to grips with jumping and be introduced to some onshore wavesailing.

Windsurfing and improving at it is a big challenge for us all, from ‘Beginner to Winner’, and it’s easier to improve when someone is there to help guide, coach and enthuse you. Joining in on a coaching week means that you’re in a supportive environment, with help from both coaches and fellow students, which will help to nurture your development and get you focused on what you need to do to move on up in all areas of your sailing. Having a great coach demonstrate the best way to perform a skill and then coaching you through it is amazingly powerful and eye-opening. Lastly, Jem uses video coaching throughout the clinic, and his positive insights into to what you can do to improve have a very profound effect on your sailing and enjoyment of the sport.

Jem’s inimitable coaching style, which redefines the concepts of enthusiasm, passion and commitment, will really rub off on you and inspire you to take action to help you move forward. He helps you learn how to learn, or to put it another way, he assists you to become the pilot and not the passenger in your windsurfing. With help from his female co coach, Rachel Tucker, he will help you to find the key to unlock your potential, and this will also ensure that the knowledge and skills you have taken on board will continue upon your return home and during your future sessions.

The main skills that will undergo the biggest development, and what we all use in windsurfing, are what Jem calls the holy trinity: plane early, sail fast, being upwind. These will improve the most on the clinic and will give you way more opportunities to improve in all areas and attempt more gybes, go into gybes faster, sail faster, make more turns, jump, etc, etc. The main achievements will be to enjoy your sailing more, go faster, be stronger and last longer in the water, and learn and develop in all moves much more quickly, be it water starting, blasting, turning or jumping, for example.

A sense of humour, heaps of excitement, and a willingness to learn. Oh, and a wetsuit, swimwear, a harness, hat and shades. And be ready to have a damn good time capped off with some cold refreshments to celebrate many fantastic days in the water!

I was really happy to get involved with this clinic, quite simply because I’m sure its going to be a lot of fun! Over the last few years I’ve been involved with teaching and promoting women’s windsurfing in various ways. I’ve benefited myself from women’s clinics and loved the camaraderie and the atmosphere of these trips. I also owe much of my windsurfing progress to Jem and his clinics, so I jumped at the chance to get involved, especially in the wonderful spot of Prasonisi. I’m really looking forward to sailing with a group of women in the sunshine and helping them to progress.

A Prasonisi clinic has all the ingredients of a great holiday and I would encourage anyone who loves windsurfing and who is looking to speed up the learning process to take part. I think the intermediate stage of windsurfing can be really frustrating and that women often benefit from focussed, tailored coaching to learn the key skills, rather than the trial and error and catapult approach. I think we often need to understand a move and break it down before we can learn it. This is where demos, one to one coaching, video feedback and Jem’s encouragement really helps! The learning does not end with the clinic as the coaching tips stay with you. This means your learning is accelerated when you get home too. Sailing fast, making way more waterstarts, overtaking the guys, jumping, gybing and throwing in a few tricks are such exciting achievements in windsurfing and if you are looking to get there then I can vouch that Jem can show you how!

JP / Pryde Young Guns look and learn

Christof Kirschner reports from the fifth full day of the 2011 JP / NeilPryde Young Gun Camp on Prasonisi…

The exhaustion from the last days of intensive training and the trip to Lardos yesterday evening is now clearly evident. For most of the kids day 5 began in ‘slow motion’. Many kids had to be knocked up out of bed today . But the morning allows for a little breather and some light wind training – but only for a short time, because after lunch the wind starts picking up continuously.

The waves are getting higher and higher, and while the youngest among the kids bravely struggle with the tough conditions, others prepare themselves for a first wave session with Kauli. Excitement and nervousness increase significantly. Tomorrow is competition day and everyone is still working hard on their moves in order to give a great show.

In the evening, when the waves were already mast high and the wind picked up even more , Kauli, Andy and Youp showed us what windsurfing is all about – meter high jumps, loops and a lot of sick freestyle action. After dinner everyone was off to bed quite early. After all, tomorrow everybody wants to be well rested for a big day.

JP / NeilPryde Young Guns 2011

Christof Kirschner reports from the second full day of the 2011 JP / NeilPryde Young Gun Camp on Prasonisi…

A glass of orange juice, toast, fruit – the start of the day 3 of the Young Gun Camp is much quieter. For two days the Meltemi has been blowing incessantly and one short glance on the water from our breakfast table confirms another day of full – power! As if the Aegean Sea would feel that the arrival of wave champion Kauli is coming closer decent crest of waves start building up on the west coast and slowly but surely we are preparing ourselves for a Big Day.

Windsurf kit used becomes smaller and breaks between sailing hours longer – but all kids are fully motivated and enthusiastic to show what they have already learned and they constantly keep on working on new moves. For the very young ones among them the training day has become long. Andy Bubble and Youp ease the training with cool moves but also they are continuously coaching the kids and contribute on their success.

Many hands are taped but the happy faces of the kids shine all over the beach – even the coaches have some visible signs of exhaustion. Pius Gaensler is celebrating his birthday today and even though his deepest wish – to make the Air Jibe – hasn’t come true on this day he was celebrated duely at dinner! But the week is not over yet and maybe he will see a belated birthday present.

Tomorrow’s training programme will be tight: loop training, wave sailing, and flat water training. After dinner we will head for a go-kart race to Lardos, and then we will relax and let the evening fade away in a beach bar.

JP / NeilPryde Young Guns Camp 2011

Christof Kirschner reports from the beginning of the 2011 JP / NeilPryde Young Gun Camp on Prasonisi…

Registration Day: Wind gusts over 30 knots swept over the sandy beach at the opening of the JP / NP’s Young Gun Camp! You could literally see the tension written on the kids’ faces before their first ‘performance’ on the water… But to start with the participants had to sign in for the camp and take their lycras and caps . After a first grouping of the camp participants and a few explanatory words from Steve and Manuel (coaches), the Young Gun’s were ready for the water. For some the strong wind was hard but they didn’t give in and were fighting all day with the tough conditions. The level of the camp participants has become much higher and so we saw right from the very first day Air Jibes and Spocks. And we are indeed very curious what what we will see at the end of the week. The first star to arrive at the camp was Youp Schmit (NED 27). He came in for lunch but when he saw the great conditions he didn’t lose a minute to rig up his kit to show us a number of cool moves on the flat water side just in front of the Pro Center! A promising start and a huge field of Young Guns dominated the first day of the camp. The forecast for the next few days promises strong and stable windy conditions and tomorrow after the official opening and the final grouping we let it rock.

Day 1: Yesterday evening, the last participants and Andy Chambers arrived in Prasonisi. Andy was afraid that his windsurf kit had remained in Athens, but after he had spent 2 hours of waiting time at Rhodes’ airport his kit finally showed up. The official opening, the introduction of ​​the coaches, the camp doctor and the video team was the first item on our agenda after breakfast. Thereafter each group briefly discussed its daily programme and out they went on the water. Again Prasonisi is at its windiest side. And the forecast for the next few days looks very promising. Fully concentrated the kids practice their moves. Again and again the little groups gather around their coaches on the beach to get new instructions which they put right away into practice out on the water. The second day of the camp is over, exhausted but happy faces come back from beach and all kids are alredy looking forward to seeing the new video!

Probably the world’s biggest and the most popular youth windsurfing coaching event – the 5th JP/NP Young Guns Camp – will take place this year from 07 to 14 August with world class coaching for a whole week hosted by Christof Kirschner in Prasonisi, Rhodes with Kauli Seadi, Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers & Youp Schmit. At the southernmost point of Rhodes, in the Aegean sea, lies the world class sailing destination of Prasonisi. Away from the more developed areas of the island, you will find a unique sailing destination. This unspoilt part of Greece offers the perfect holiday destination for all ages and all levels of windsurfer. Short, direct flights from the UK and high quality hotel accommodation ensure everyone is happy.

Early season temperatures start at 20-25°C in April and May with an average of over 60% days F4+. Once the Meltemi wind kicks in June expect between 20 and 30 knots through and into September; or why not consider October for a late season break away from the crowds with excellent wind reliability and warm temperatures and less strong conditions.

What makes Prasonisi unique is its two bays, divided by a sand spit which sits back to back. Here you have the choice of flat water one side and waves one the other perfect for all disciplines. The training area just of the sheltered sandbar, allows beginners to take the first steps in the security shallow water. For those wishing to practice freestyle the flat water and reliable wind conditions are perfect. For the wave sailor you can progress to 1-2m+ wave, depending on conditions.

Boards are supplied by The Pro Center Christof Kirschner which is located directly next to the shallow water area, a few metres from the water. Each year they buy 170 brand-new surfboards from JP-Australia and 230 rigs from Neil Pryde. The centre is open from late April to October and offers great facilities including fresh water showers, snack bar, shaded relaxation area and beachwear shop. A choice of taverna style restaurants are close by.  The highly experienced team offer comprehensive instruction for all levels with safety cover is provided by a powerful motorboat. Live wind stats are relayed from the centre to the Pro Centre website for the latest information to help you decide when to sail.

Dedicated to the development of the sport, young sailors are able to use a pool of high quality junior equipment at discounted rates. Since 2007 they have hosted the JP Young Guns Camp each August. for 8-19 years, with  training from world class sailors such as Kauli Seadi, Ricardo Campello, Antxon Oteagui and Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers. Flights are provided by Thomson which flies from main regional airports on Wednesdays and Fridays and Saturdays – from Gatwick and Manchester.

The prize includes return economy flights on Thomson from London Gatwick or Manchester, economy car hire from Budget Drive Rentacar in Rhodes, 7 nights at the Atrium Prestige Hotel in a deluxe room with garden view on twin share, half board  twin share basis and 1 week board hire for 2 persons with Pro Centre Christof Kirschner All arrangements including booking of flights, car hire, board hire and room reservation are to be made through Sportif. All additional extras must be paid for by the passengers (ie insurance, pre-booked seats etc). Transport to the UK airport, instruction, additional food and drinks are not included. Availablilty of flights and accommodation will be confirmed within 7 days of notifying the prize winner.

The prizewinner should check with any relevant authorities regarding passport and visa requirements; it is the sole responsibility of winners and their companions to produce all requisite travel documentation. Travel and other insurance is not included and it is strongly advised to take out insurance cover for all appropriate risks. Any costs incurred additional to the prize package elements advertised are at the expense of winners and/or their companions. The prizewinner must be aged 18 years or over.

The prizewinner will be notified by email within 7 days of the draw date of 1^st March 2011 and are required to accept their prize by email within 7 days of notification.
