The National Watersports Festival is back for another year and it looks like it will be bigger and better than ever. With a whole host of activities both on and off the water, it is the must attend event for any watersports enthusiast. Boards will have more details right here in the near future, but for now here’s a brief run down of what you can expect at the festival…

Fri Aug 30 – Sunday 01 Sept 2013

Format

Fri Trade Day/Clinics/ Lectures

Sat – Sun Main participation/competition activity.

Disciplines

Kayaking, Kitesurfing, Stand Up and Windsurfing.

Locations

The whole beachlands seafront with a 50% increased foot print which stretches from the Funfair to Golf Club and has associated areas for the delivery of each of the disciplines.

Trade

The main trade tent is situated in the same place as last year, most of all available indoor stand space has been allocated with a few stands available within the party tent which backs onto Trade tent facing onto the beach. There is outside trade space available within IOTB car park. There will also be allocated outside exhibition space available for kayaking and kitesurfing industry.

Party

There will be a party on Friday night with 2 x bands and DJ with charity auction for W4CR. Then on Sat night Band DJ and a horror themed evening.

Party Tickets

There will be a limited number of free tickets issued per stand and then a limited number available at 50% discount.

Camping & Parking

All public car parking areas have been allocated for sole use of the NWF. Friends of participants will have to purchase a camping and party ticket in order for them to gain access. There will be separated allocated trade camping areas.

The organisers of the National Watersports Festival are giving YOU the opportunity to win entry to this year’s event! NWF will be taking place 30th August until 1st September, on Hayling Island and will bring together the windsurfing masses, along with some SUPers and kite surfers for good measure too. As many of you know the fancy dress party on the Saturday night is a highlight for many and the team are looking for fancy dress suggestions; what do you think the theme should be? Video: Bernard the Bear Goes Windsurfing

This might not be a new video, but if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth a watch! The animated Bernard the Bear heads to the beach with a friend, then comes across some relatively modern looking windsurfing equipment and takes it out for a spin. It’s not too often windsurfing gets some animation coverage and we’re thankful to the National Watersports Festival Facebook page for sharing this one!

It has undoubtedly been a very busy week or so in the windsurfing world! Here in the UK the final wave event of the series took place in Cornwall, with Jamie Hancock winning both the event and taking the overall title. Boards will follow up with further interviews with Jamie and other title winners very soon, for now to catch up on all the BWA Cornwall coverage head here. Internationally events such as the EFPT and the AWT crowned yet more winners, notably 16year old Bernd Roediger taking down Kevin Pritchard in the final of the Maui Makani Classic! More UK windsurfers taking top spots were Saskia Sills and Kieran Martin, who both bagged silvers at the RS:X youth worlds, click here for the full story!

Still on the competition topic, but in a very different way NWF have launched a new Facebook page and to encourage you to Like it are giving away an entry into the festival each month, read more here.

Coming up this weekend are two huge windsurfing events. Up in Aberdovey Boardwise are running their annual Bonfire Bash with guests including Nik Baker, Ross Williams, Jem Hall and Dave White. Whilst in Weymouth freestylers unite for the first EFPT on UK waters! You can still get involved and enter for the event right here and of course follow the event for all news.

Many of us have a distance to go to head to NWF each year, but Roberto Ricci flew all the way from his home in Italy to come to the event for the second year running. Roberto loves the atmosphere of the event, and couldn’t wait to join the masses for NWF again this year. Plus if even looks like it may be back next year too! Oscar Carmichael is making a name for himself as one of the up and coming freestylers to watch out for in the UK, a fact he proved again at NWF by finishing third in the pro night tow-in.

Windsurfing history:

I started windsurfing in 2006 at my local Team15 club in Portland Harbour. First I started racing in the regional zone squad, which progressed to the Junior National squad, then I decided sailing around buoys on a lake wasn’t my thing so I got into freestyle. I fell in love with freestyle immediately and I did my first competition in 2008, which I won, and since then I’ve been competing around the UK and trying to travel abroad to windsurf as much as possible.

Who has inspired/influenced you in windsurfing?

Steven van Brookhaven inspires me a lot as he was the first European to win a freestyle world title in years. Also anybody who’s got really good style like Kiri Thode, Gollito, Yarden Meir and Youp Schmit.

Why did you enter NWF?

Because it’s a really fun event and you get to see everyone from around the UK.

What fleet did you enter, where did you finish and what was the experience like?

I entered the pro night tow-in and the Turbo15 night race, I finished 3^rd in the tow-in. It was awesome! Getting towed in at 35 knots at night time is definitely one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

What was your favourite part of the event this year?

The night tow-in was for sure my favourite part of the event, you feel like such a hero getting towed towards a crowd at night.

Have you entered any other windsurfing events this year?

UKWA West Kirby and Eastbourne.

What’s next for you? What do you want to progress next with your windsurfing?

I want to work really hard these next couple of months, try and train abroad this winter and I want to be able to do all the power moves on my bad side.

Who inspired your windsurfing

I was lucky to get a job with Dee Caldwell Windsurfing. He was world freestyle champion at the time and taught me the value of getting out there in all wind strengths to develop new skills. Also, Robby Naish came and sailed with us on the River Thames at Kingston Bridge just at the time of the famous Peter Chilvers court ruling on who invented windsurfing. Windsurfing was booming and I just felt compelled to be part of it.

Why did you enter NWF

I was team coach for some of my SB Windwise clients, helping them with kit, race tactics and event nerves!

We had some great successes with race wins! Also, Sarah Edwards came 4th overall in the women’s Freeride Fleet and Murray ‘The Tiger’ came 4th overall in the men’s Freeride fleet.

What was your favourite part of the event

Seeing the huge numbers and diversity of competitors all out there enjoying the collective spirit that makes the event so unique and fun.

It’s what windsurfing is all about, being on the water, being social and supporting those who are new to the sport and admiring those who are taking the sport to new levels.

I’d also like to thank everyone who attended my clinic on Saturday afternoon, I always appreciate the interaction and feedback. Thank you!

Plus the whole team of people who bring this event together – one passion, one hell of an event!

What’s next for you

I have a full winter coaching schedule with courses and trips to Cornwall, Egypt, Mauritius and Australia and putting finishing touches to our expanding 2013 schedule.

What do you want to progress next with your windsurfing

I’m determined to get more personal sailing in over the next 12 months. But my main focus is constantly looking at ways to improve my coaching and developing the most effective skill development systems to help others learn more quickly and get greater enjoyment from windsurfing! See you on the water soon!
