Open/Shut Calendars present two of the best windsurfing calendars you could wish to see for 2013: the UK Breaks Calendar and the 2013 Windsurfing Calendar.

With all shots from top photographer John Carter both showcase the talents of incredible riders, in equally incredible locations.

The 2013 Windsurfing Calendar was shot on location at Gnarloo, Margret River, Spreckelsville, Esperence and Maui’s north shore; John Carter takes us on an introspective of today’s world of new school wavesailing.

Victor on the cover

Ever wonder why the British Isles continually father some of the finest wave sailors on the planet? Lineage of this calibre isn’t born out of warm water and tropical beaches, it’s forged from the harsh brutality of Atlantic swells, battering low pressures and unforgiving, isolated slabs.

Littered with world class reefs and beach breaks, we blow the lid on what the British Isles really have to offer – Introducing The 2013 UK Windsurfing Calendar.

Showcasing 13 awe inspiring images from windsurfing’s homeland, shot by the lens of John Carter and digitally printed onto super heavy weight paper. The UK’s never looked so good, nor has your wall.

Levi Siver is one of the stand out wavesailors of his generation, known for his fluid ridng and full tweaked aerials. With his two signature boards, the LS Quad and Thruster fresh on the market, alongside his favoured sail the Banzai, Boards wanted to find out more from the developers of Levi’s chosen set up.

Catch up with Levi on video (development chat plus insane action) plus further words from Keith Teboul and Jason Diffin.

Check out the video with Levi:

sequence 06 1280×720 from Ocean4Hawaii on Vimeo.

Quatro designer Keith Teboul shares his insight into the two boards and the Banzai:

The Thruster

“This board was developed here on MAUI with myself and input from team riders…..and customers as well. We have a demo programme here at the shop in Maui and I like to put the potential new plugs in to the rotation to see the feedback from our clientele…this really gives me a real world look at how the boards feel.

For me the Thruster was designed to replace the single fin board of our range. I believe it is fast, stable, quick planing with a smooth turn to it, it has the option to be used as a single for those who want to go between single and thruster.

I believe this board is a great transition board to go from single fin to multi fin…it still has some single fin characteristics that make it comfortable to jump on coming from the single fin world.”

Levi Siver Quad

The Quad

“We have put so much R and D in the quad boards it was really just a matter of sitting down and fine tuning. Getting this new quad to plane quicker with a smoother flow from turn to turn, so I really worked on rocker and foam flow to achieve this.

This quad is ideal for side to side onshore conditions, I think it can suit any rider looking to improve their wave sailing skills in varied conditions. The quad has a more spontaneous feel than the thruster, where the thruster has a more solid even flow than the quad.”

Bernd Roediger on the Banzai

The Banzai

“From what I saw on the Banzai there was many of us involved in development, the main person being Marcilio Browne. Coming from North Sails Marcilio had a certain feeling he was looking for. He spent time with Jason to achieve some of those feelings (good for jumping, broader range but still low end power). I think what he brought to the sails improved the overall performance, as always around here Jason likes to get input from everyone. tend to test most of the smaller sizes being a smaller sailor and usually using smaller sails than anyone (this year alone I used a 3.3 17 times) but I’M usually on a 3.7 or 4.0….

For me the Banzai is a good balance of low end power, it has a bigger wind range than last year, it’s easier to control in higher winds, has a more stable feeling and yet still has drive and a neutral feeling that is at your fingertips when you are wave riding.”

Jason Diffin in action

Jason Diffin, Goya sail designer on the Banzai:

“Me, Marcilio Browne, Keith Teboul, Levi Siver, Francisco Goya and Bernd Roediger were involved in the development.

Compared to last year the sail has a lower, more forward and locked center of effort. Also a much better high wind range and increased durability through stronger perimeter materials.

The ’13 Banzai has a more stable draft that allows you to feel comfortable in a wider range of wind strengths, particularly powered up conditions. The power delivery in the mid 4m and up sizes is very robust and direct, it is a sail to get you moving. The smaller sizes are cut to be more forgiving in higher wind, and to manage power well.

Power, speed, and easy handling/control- that’s what we are all looking for- no matter if you are Brawzinho or a part time windsurf enthusiast. Banzai ’13 delivers the key elements- early planing, smooth handling, and great high wind control. Quick power, easy speed, controlled jumps, and effortless maneuvers are the performance characteristics of the ’13 Banzai.”

Quatro

The KT Quad remains a similar shape and graphics, while the LS Quad has been fully updated. The updated LS Quad holds all the qualities of the LS concept; versatility, quick planing transitioning to a top end speed, spontaneous turns; all infused with Keith latest shaping experience.
The line is enriched with a larger choice of volumes making it available to all sailors:
VOLUMES: 72-78-84-90-98-110
The new LS signature graphic designs are based on Levi’s vision of windsurfing.
New Pads will enhance sailing experience with a new grooving, dual density and quick tail for premium sailing experience.

Quatro also introduce the new LS Thruster. Thruster is the result of month of sailing and perfecting a unique board. It offers a different approach to wave sailing then the Quad; more predictable though the turns, easier to sail on the back foot…This board is the easiest board to transition from a single fin to a mufti fin.

The Tempo (twin fin) and FSW continue with similar shapes and graphics.

Goya Boards

The line shapes remain similar, including the Quad, One, Air and Surf models. Though all boards have been updated, with additional volumes and a thruster set up now available for the One.

Goya Sails

The Banzaii has been updated to provide lower and more forward driving power, giving the sail more control and a better high end performance, whilst maintaining a similar low end performance just delivered in a slightly different way. There are also a few more colour options, in line with the current models and pro edition colours.

The Storm has also seen some progression, with a more compact shape and increased range and manoeuvrability, plus new pro edition colours are available too.

Tanya Saleh reports from day four of the American Windsurfing Tour’s Cactus Cup, Punta San Carlos, Baja. Images by Clark Merritt…

We awoke to slightly larger swell again, but the fast increasing large high tides once again meant that the point waves did not exist. Therefore it was decided to hold round 3 at the beach break by the Solo Sports camp. Solid head high and larger sets were coming through so everyone geared up for the 12 minute, 2 waves to count heats.

The Youths were first to go out and they were clearly all fired up because they were all charging getting right under the lip with every hit. This was accompanied by several crashes so all together was rather entertaining to watch. Morgan took 1st place with Jordan in 2nd an Jay in 3rd.

In the men’s, Keith Teboul and Kevin Pritchard progressed from the first heat, Kevin McGilvray and Skylar Haywood moved on from the second heat, with Graham Ezzy and Morgan Noireaux joining them from the 3rd heat. The final sailors were Keith, Graham, Morgan, and Kevin P. The set waves were becoming a little less frequent and Graham and KP got the better longer waves therefore progressing to the super final. This 20 minute heat was truly fantastic to watch; experience vs. youth. Both of them were getting 4 turns and 2 or 3 aerials per wave. Graham scored on the larger wave front, and his additional goiters thrown into the mix gave him the edge to take 1st place.

In the amateurs, Solo Sports Staff member Joey Sanchez finally made it passed his first heat. Joey has only been windsurfing for a year and a half, is very competitive, and therefore was a little upset that he hadn’t made it yet. Today was his day and he got through to the final. Conversely Pete Dekay (editor of Windsport) has been lying flat on his back for 24 hours thanks to a random back injury. With no Dr’s within a couple of hundred miles he has been taking it easy and nursing it with plenty of Baja Fogs. Hopefully it will head as quickly as it came.

In the women’s we all struggled to find waves but I managed to grab the biggest and landing an aerial pretty much sealed the deal. Event organiser Sam took 2nd place with her increasingly aggresive turns, Miho in 3rd and Catherine in 4th.

Huge shout out to Solo Sports owner Kevin Trejo who some of you will know. He got bullied into joining the Master’s having not windsurfed for 10 years!! His first round resulted his highest score being a waterstart, but has redeemed himself since by winning the next 2 rounds!

Tanya Saleh reports from day three of the American Windsurfing Tour’s Cactus Cup, Punta San Carlos, Baja…

Glassy conditions led to extended surf sessions this morning both down at the point and at the main beach break. Unfortunately the high spring tides meant that by the time the wind kicked in, the swell wasn’t playing ball. Although some waist to head high sets rolled in they were very few and far between.

After lunch it was full on 4.5 weather and the judges called a pro – am event. What is this I hear you say? (Since I wondered exactly the same thing). It’s a team event in pairs where each Amateaur picks out the name of a Pro man to team up with. There are 10 minute heats and you are ONLY scored on overall impression.

This obviously ended up rather similar to an SWA event, except for imagine Kevin Pritchard killing a head high wave with a blonde wig, starboard cape on and beer in hand. It was hilarious. There were wrestlers, there was sabotage, there were tears and much more.

The whole event took all afternoon and was certainly a fine display of skill combined with creativity. The moral of the story was … that to win, you couldn’t just bust some amazing moves; you had to do so with a special twist.

The winners were Russ Faurot and Yossy who heat after heat landed synchronised jumps and wave rides. 2nd place went to Morgan and Robert who put up an incredibly good fight with their own synchronised moves. 3rd place went to Nathan Mershon and Josh Sampeiro; whose wardrobes earnt them many points for request. Not only were wrestling masks involved, but also women’s swimwear … AND world class waveriding.

Tomorrow afternoon the ‘real’ swell will be back and competition will (unfortunately) be restored to normal

British competitor Tanya Saleh reports from day two of the American Windsurfing Tour’s Cactus Cup, Punta San Carlos, Baja…

Another successful day and another round complete. The swell ranged from knee high to logo high depending on whether you were lucky enough to score a set wave in your heat. The family style competition vibe continued with competitors and spectators cheering each other on from the point when not in the water.

The men’s final featured Keith Teboul, Russ Faurot, Nathan Mershon, and Matt Pritchard. When you watch Keith Teboul killing it down the line landing 3 aerials one after the other ontop of 4 turns on the same wave – you know it’s going to be a good heat. All 4 of them were killing it and it pretty much came down to who got the biggest, longest waves.

Both Nathan and Keith progressed to the super final where we got to witness the battle of the aerials. Nathan managed to pip Keith on the wave selection to take the win. In the women’s I managed to take the win with Miho in 2nd, Sam in 3rd, and Catherine in 4th.

I have to say that this is the most fun contest I have ever been a part of. The conditions are so enjoyable that sailing in your heat is awesome since you get to sail the point with just 4 of you there for 15 minutes. It’s just like cruising around with your friends having a good time.

As featured in the forthcoming June 2011 issue of BOARDS Mag (#274, due on sale 7 June) check out Oxbow / TWM2 riders Levi Siver, Keith Teboul and Manu Bouvet in action around the Marshall Islands. The Republic of the Marshall Islands consists of 29 atolls each made up of many islets and 5 islands in the central Pacific near the Equator. The total number of islands and islets in the whole Republic is approximately 1,225 spreading across a sea area of over 750,000 square miles. There are only 70 square miles (171 square kilometers) of land. All low lying sand islands with no topography. With population of around 20,000 people, Majuro is the capital of The Marshall Islands.

Levi Siver: “Words fall short to describe the beauty and tropical bliss of the Marshall Islands. If you put Hawaii and Indonesia in a blender you have the Marshall Islands. A perfect balance of quality waves and cool breezy trade winds…”
