Many of the UK’s top windsurfing gurus are running some very exciting clinics this summer. giving you the perfect opportunity to progress your skills. When looking for your next clinic it’s really important to make sure that 1. You have picked a coach that suits your style and 2. The clinic will be delivering skills and coaching appropriate to your windsurfing. With that in mind, Boards catches up with Jem Hall who is soon to be delivering a women’s focussed clinic in Prasonisi to find out more about the clinic and why you should attend.

What’s happening?

World-renowned coach Jem Hall has organised a female-focused coaching clinic, which, with the help of female co-coach Rachel Tucker and his own hugely enthusiastic and passionate style, will see you improve and enjoy your windsurfing more in one week than you would in an entire season or two by yourself. More info here.

Where?

Perfect Prasonisi on the Southern tip of Reliable Rhodes. Blessed by warm water and the ever-present locally accelerated Meltemi winds, and with a choice of sailing on flat water or an onshore wave beach upwind, learning locations just don’t come much better than this.

When?

12 – 19 June 2013.

Who is it for? How good you need to be?

The clinic is for intermediates to advanced, and you will get the most out of the week if you’re waterstarting (or very close to it) and in the straps and harness, or at least comfortable with planing and getting near the footstraps. Advanced sailors will be able to seriously improve their gybing and nail some other turns, and they’ll get the opportunity to get to grips with jumping and be introduced to some onshore wavesailing.

Caitie from New Zealand going for a duck gybe in Perfect Prasonisi

Why should someone attend?

Windsurfing and improving at it is a big challenge for us all, from ‘Beginner to Winner’, and it’s easier to improve when someone is there to help guide, coach and enthuse you. Joining in on a coaching week means that you’re in a supportive environment, with help from both coaches and fellow students, which will help to nurture your development and get you focused on what you need to do to move on up in all areas of your sailing. Having a great coach demonstrate the best way to perform a skill and then coaching you through it is amazingly powerful and eye-opening. Lastly, Jem uses video coaching throughout the clinic, and his positive insights into to what you can do to improve have a very profound effect on your sailing and enjoyment of the sport.

What makes this clinic different from the rest?

Jem’s inimitable coaching style, which redefines the concepts of enthusiasm, passion and commitment, will really rub off on you and inspire you to take action to help you move forward. He helps you learn how to learn, or to put it another way, he assists you to become the pilot and not the passenger in your windsurfing. With help from his female co coach, Rachel Tucker, he will help you to find the key to unlock your potential, and this will also ensure that the knowledge and skills you have taken on board will continue upon your return home and during your future sessions.

This lot are looking very relaxed happy, and yes they have just finished a week in Reliable Rhodes

So what can I learn on the clinic and achieve at the end of it?

The main skills that will undergo the biggest development, and what we all use in windsurfing, are what Jem calls the holy trinity: plane early, sail fast, being upwind. These will improve the most on the clinic and will give you way more opportunities to improve in all areas and attempt more gybes, go into gybes faster, sail faster, make more turns, jump, etc, etc. The main achievements will be to enjoy your sailing more, go faster, be stronger and last longer in the water, and learn and develop in all moves much more quickly, be it water starting, blasting, turning or jumping, for example.

What do I need to bring with me?

A sense of humour, heaps of excitement, and a willingness to learn. Oh, and a wetsuit, swimwear, a harness, hat and shades. And be ready to have a damn good time capped off with some cold refreshments to celebrate many fantastic days in the water!

Jem’s co-coach Rachel Tucker charging into a 360

More from Rachel…

Why have you become involved in this clinic?

I was really happy to get involved with this clinic, quite simply because I’m sure its going to be a lot of fun! Over the last few years I’ve been involved with teaching and promoting women’s windsurfing in various ways. I’ve benefited myself from women’s clinics and loved the camaraderie and the atmosphere of these trips. I also owe much of my windsurfing progress to Jem and his clinics, so I jumped at the chance to get involved, especially in the wonderful spot of Prasonisi. I’m really looking forward to sailing with a group of women in the sunshine and helping them to progress.

Why would you encourage someone to take part?

A Prasonisi clinic has all the ingredients of a great holiday and I would encourage anyone who loves windsurfing and who is looking to speed up the learning process to take part. I think the intermediate stage of windsurfing can be really frustrating and that women often benefit from focussed, tailored coaching to learn the key skills, rather than the trial and error and catapult approach. I think we often need to understand a move and break it down before we can learn it. This is where demos, one to one coaching, video feedback and Jem’s encouragement really helps! The learning does not end with the clinic as the coaching tips stay with you. This means your learning is accelerated when you get home too. Sailing fast, making way more waterstarts, overtaking the guys, jumping, gybing and throwing in a few tricks are such exciting achievements in windsurfing and if you are looking to get there then I can vouch that Jem can show you how!

Another top DVD collection to guide you through your windsurfing journey is Jem Hall’s trilogy (various £); whether your just starting out, getting to grips with freestyle or taking to the waves, Jem has it covered. Take a look at the trailers below and head on over to http://www.jemhall.com for all the info.

Tricktionary (various £), as many of you may know, is another great way of learning a lot of windsurfing moves. From the very beginning right through to the most complex of manoeuvres, Tricktionary is the place to find all the info. Tricktionary is now available as a book, DVD, app and more, head here for full details.

But windsurfing of course is not all about watching specific instructional pieces, just watching the pros pull off truly incredible feats can be enough to inspire us to head onto the water. One of the best people at filming and producing movies for this very purpose is Andre Paskowski, we’ve all recently seen Rewarded, but remember Minds Wide Open (£24.00)? One of the stand of windsurfing movies of all time, and a great stocking filler too!

Check out the trailer below, and for more info on the filming, the team and what the movie is all about head here.

Stepping away from moving images to the printed variety, there are a lot of awesome windsurfing photos out there and some of the best have been chosen for a selection of 2013 calendars now on offer. The biggest, and potentially the best, are the 2013 Open/Shut windsurfing calendars (£19.99); one focussing on the UK breaks and the other going worldwide. These calendars take some of the best shots from PWA photographer John Carter and put them into a glossy, classy calendar which makes a nice addition to any windsurfers wall.

Check out the Open/Shut website for more images and full details of the calendars; alsocheck out this link for more details of other windsurfing calendars available for 2013.

Whilst we’re talking about printed windsurfing images, it would be rude not to remind you that the Autumn Winter Wave Annual of Boards Magazine (£8.50 inclusive of p&p) is currently on sale too! Again this wil make a great stocking filler, especially for any wave head; with the Cloning of Koster, travel to southern America with Maui’s best, looking back at the evolution of wavesailing and much more more there is something for everyone in this 180 page publication. Check out more and where you can purchase right here.

If you’re looking for a slightly more quirky christmas gift, then a windsurfing model could be just the ticket! In the past these resembled 1980′s style equipment, now however the models are made incredibly well and really look like miniature versions of real equipment! Perfectly placed on the mantel piece of any windsurfer, these models are produced and sold by a few companies, our top pick are the one’s from Boardwise.

We’re going to finish this weeks wish list with something a little different, and just for the ladies (well, we have seen men wearing them too actually!). Nalu Beads (various £) have come up with an original way of remember for favourite sessions at your favourite breaks.

Each bead is named after and inspired by a surfing break, pop the beads together on a bracelet, necklace or anklet and bring back memories of great surfing or windsurfing times what ever the weather; plus they look amazing too! Check out a couple of our favourites below, and for more info head to the Nalu Beads site here.

Jem Hall joins Boards for the instalment of The Moves That Matter, this time looking at light winds skills.

I hope that you are getting into my new technique series now, remember you can send feedback and question on the Boards forum (new members invited and very, very welcome) on the MTM thread by clicking here.

After presenting the key gybe tips in my last movie and Boards technique feature l am now presenting a comprehensive light wind moves video in order to show you what you can do in lighter winds to take your sailing, carve gybing, wave sailing and freestlye up another notch.

I suggest that you watch the moves and as an exercise see if you can understand what I’m doing in order to achieve the move, and then visualise yourself doing it.

Of course now it’s your turn to get your motivated selves out there on floaty boards or windSUPs. WindSUPs are great for light winds as you can float easily, stay upwind (waterline length), dance around on them (no straps), make mistakes, accelerate in 7 -10 knots and lastly, uphaul in comfort (eva decks).

It is important to note that many of my clients learn a huge amount in my light wind sessions and really enjoy them far more than they thought they would. When I was growing up as a young windie we all went out on old beginner boards and soft sails and had fun races round some buoys, tried to knock each off but mainly we did lots of light wind freestyle and hours and hours out of the harness. Little did I know how much this was building my skills, love for the sport and preparing for my, unbeknownst, future coaching profession.

These are the key tips for these light wind moves:

Duck under the water as soon as you get in so that you are wet straight away and don’t mind falling in

SEE where you want to go and focus on your vision primarily when learning new moves

Get low and keep the rig away whilst you enjoy the journey

Thanks for reading and watching and please do forward this, and my other articles on to your peers and sailing buddies and post online to social media sites.

Rip & Enjoy,

Jem

If you seriously want to improve and have a fantastic holiday book on one of Jem’s coaching clinics NOW! For 2013 Jem’s clinics are now selling fast so please consider Marsa Alam, Egypt in March, Moulay, Morocco in May or Rhodes in June and September, Psc, Baja in August or Mauritius in September. Find out more about Jem’s clinics with Sportif here.

“I am furiously packing for my next clinic which is off to Jeri, Brazil for my annual sojourn to warm water, wind and waves (watch Whitey’s video from last year below) with my merry bunch of rippers.

After my Ireland wave clinic I had a Dutch group join me in Ireland and they were a top bunch and had a right old time out in Brandon Bay and very much enjoyed being Jemetically Modified, check out their exploits below.

After Ireland it was next stop to West Wales, via the glorious Irish and hilly Welsh roads, for the BoardWise Bonfire Aberdovey demo where we scored wind and lots of happy windies loving the toys and it goes without saying that the FireMove was loving the conditions, whilst being powered up the super stable and speedy Ezzy Cheetahs.

Carpe Diem,

Windsurfing demos are one of the best ways to both try new equipment and get fantastic advice on setting up and sailing the gear from some of the UK’s best windsurfers. Many shops, schools and clubs run demo days across the country and throughout most of the year, so there is always an opportunity to get down to one. Some shops such as Juice Boardsports run demos on forecast, so if you’re anywhere near Fraisthorpe beach and the wind is looking promising it’s well worth following their forum page and facebook to see what’s on. Others, such as Boardwise run even bigger demos with a whole host of brands and activities laid on.

Boards catches up with Boardwise to find out more about how the demos are run and what’s involved:

Just some of the Boardwise demo equipment set up and ready to go!
“We run a summer demo at Aberdovey which coincides with the BSA slalom event. This is the biggest of the year with support from the town, the Yacht club and all the importers.

When someone comes along to a demo they can try all the latest kit, get advice from the people who really know about the products, but most of all just come to an event which gives them a great feel about the sport of windsurfing!

The main summer and winter demos are supported by brands including: Fanatic and North, RRD and Ezzy, Tabou and Gaastra, and Starboard and Tushingham. Not only do the brands supply top notch NEW equipment, they also bring along some top sailors too.

Demo regulars now include (to name but a few): former PWA superstar Nik Baker, current Formula World Champion Ross Williams, master of speed Dave White, plus awesome coaches Jem Hall, Sam Ross, etc. They are all more than happy to help not only with rigging, tuning and choosing equipment but also can offer top technique tips too.

Lots of people turn up and sail on Saturday. Then Saturday evening usually involves a few drinks, before getting on the water again to blow away the cobwebs on Sunday morning.

We are usually fairly lucky with the weather, and the huge range of equipment on offer means people can almost always get on the water. But even if the wind doesn’t blow we all have a great weekend; there’s normally a good night out on the Saturday at least!

We also go to all of the student events through out the year; the SWA run a great series of events through the autumn, winter and into spring. They really focus on getting as many people onto the water at all levels; there is a great contingent of beginners and improvers at the student event and we are proud to support them by taking all our gear for them to use! Plus our van goes up to the local club once a week in the summer.

On Guy Fawkes weekend each year we run a Bonfire Bash, it’s a bit late in the year so it can be a little cold, but again we have a great weekend none the less with fires on the beach and an amazing firework display! Check out the full report from Boardwise on the here.

Boards catches up with technique guru Jem Hall, as he reflects on a busy summer and looks forward to a (fingers crossed!) windy autumn and 2013 clinics.

Rhodes reflection:

I am just back from my from 10th Anniversary of coaching clinics in Rhodes and off to Brandon Bay, Ireland next week for my WaterPerson (WP) clinics there. Prasonisi gave us a few days of very light winds until the hairdryer came back on and gave us a fine send off, hats off to the crew for being focussed, fun and most of all relaxed about the delay in the wind, as we all know that there are no guarantees in life and even in Rhodes the wind needs a breather sometimes.

Rhodes crew

Autumn action:

Since my return it has been great to get some autumn action in and enjoy conditions around my local breaks, and also on a road trip down to Camber Sands. There is something about the colder weather, the rain and changeable conditions that seems to excite and inspire me, and yes there is no place like home : )

Jem Hall enjoying his new RRD and Ezzy set up on home shores

Toys, toys, toys – we love em:

During my ocean realignment on my home turf I have had the opportunity to really get to know my new toys and I must say I am loving my new Ezzy Panther Elites and the New RRD Wave Cult Quads.

The 4 battened Elites are lighter, easier power and more neutral for rides, gybes and style and really allow you to throttle the power on or off, yet they are still strong and with a huge wind range and a massive top end.

Now that I have had some quality testing time on my New Cult Quads, and in a range of conditions, I am happy to say that I have them dialed in and am really appreciating their virtues. It is also worth noting that not only am I enjoying them but so too are the people I lend them to in order to test them and provide me with valuable insight, same goes for the Elites. The feedback thus far on the RRD Cult Quads is that they are earlier to plane, have more wind range and a livelier / faster ride. Due to the narrower tails and increased tail rocker, with more vee, they are looser and now with more drive too. Yesterday saw my onshore wave riding performance definitely go up a notch – I LOVE THEM! Get in touch if you want to discuss or test either of the above.

Jem Hall in action and looking forward his 2013 clinics

Seasprite Sports now have their hands on the New Panther Elite which is Ezzy’s first four battened all – round sail and has been developed both extensively and carefully over the last two years before it’s release.

Jem Hall on his Ezzy Panther Elites

The sail is receiving very high acclaim from customers, shops and rider. Jem Hall, Ezzy brand manager UK, has this to say about the Elite:

‘I received the sails in late July and my first few sessions were in bump n jump conditions and then I really got to know them on my wave clinic in PSC, Baja, and furthermore in Rhodes and during our recent fun filled autumn sessions. I have now used them in flat water, waves and chop and for bump n jump, freestyle and, of course, wave sailing and I found the sails to be very light, have easy power, very stable and the usual massive wind range that you expect from an Ezzy. The power is similar to the Ezzy Tiger yet it is a softer delivery and due to the 4 battens the sail has an on / off switch that you can illicit from sheeting in or out and down to this the sail is quite neutral through gybes, riding and freestyle. I am really enjoying the sails, from 5.7 to 3.7, but the proof of the pudding is that when you hand it so someone to try then they are definitely are too.’

Here is what David Ezzy and his team have to say about the sail.

David Ezzy Speaks about the new 4 batten wave sail called the “Panther Elite” from Ezzy Sails on Vimeo.

The All New Ezzy Panther Elite

The 4 batten Panther Elite is the latest addition to the Ezzy Sails line up.

The Panther Elite is the culmination of years of development and it sets a new standard for 4 batten wave sails. David Ezzy didn’t just remove a batten and rush to market with a 4 batten sail like so many other companies. Ezzy decided that he wouldn’t even put a four batten sail in production unless it was better in all aspects over his existing 5 batten wave sails. Of course the Elite feels lighter, but what is amazing is how stable and easy to sail the Panther Elite is. This sail is great in the waves, but the Elite can double as a perfect flat‐water sail too.

The Panther Elite incorporates a new vertical head shaping design that controls twist and doesn’t allow for any leech flutter.

The Elite’s unique batten spacing better addresses the loading and profile demands of a 4 batten sail. After extensive testing David settled upon the magical blueprint. The battens are located higher in the sail to better optimize the sail’s performance.

Jem Hall on his Ezzy Panther Elites

The Panther Elite is handcrafted with the finest high‐tech materials available. Technora cloth along the leech reduces distortion. Spectra X‐film in the boom area gives great visibility and impact strength. The Color Fusion Tri‐Lite used in the upper sect reduces weight. The tack and foot are protected with high density Spectra X‐ply film.

But what is it all worth if you can’t rig it correctly? David Ezzy has taken all of the guess‐work out of rigging the Panther Elite. The Elite features a new system for gauging downhaul that will blow you away. It’s called “Calibrated Rigging System”. Never before has a sail been so simple to dial in.

And, like all Ezzy Sails, every Panther Elite is rigged and tuned in the Ezzy factory before being shipped.

Available from all Ezzy dealers http://seaspritesports.com/retailers.html

Jem Hall joins Boards, for the next installment of his technique series ‘Moves That Matter’. This time Jem gives us a full breakdown on the carve gybe and the main top tips involved.

Gybing in pictures...Image credit Karel Tyc

I hope that you are getting into my new technique series now and please remember you can feedback and question over on our fine forum (new members invited and very very welcome) and on the very own Moves that Matter thread – by clicking here.

After presenting the key gybe tips in pics last month, this feature now gives you a video with the overview of the carve gybe, which like all good books has a very clear beginning, middle and end. This gives you all the tips to improve certain areas of the gybe YOU identify as important to work on.

Carve Gybe Overview from Dave White on Vimeo.

It is hard for both you and I to take on all the key points of any move, so look to take a mental note of a few of them and then put those into practice. For example, as I am improving my aerials I might have one tip in mind as I approach (not during) the move – for example ‘look back to the beach as you take off.’ The tips in this feature are what I use if my gybes are not quite working too …

Back hand waaaay down the boom

Lock out of the turn

Get down James Brown, in your exit.

Next up I will be breaking the carve gybe into it’s key areas and suggesting that you work on each stage and I will present you the visual images with which to do this.

Jem is sponsored by RRD boards, Ezzy Sails, Flying Objects, Big Salty Weather and Prosport Sunblock.

Check out www.jemhall.com for more details on Jem and his coaching.
