The PWA present the latest selection of clips put forward for the PWA Islas Canarias Windsurfing Excellence Awards including some big waves, even bigger wipeouts and radical jumps. 

The latest entries for the PWA Islas Canarias Windsurfing Excellence Awards feature action from the legendary Moreno twins as well as Justyna Sniady (Quatro / KA Sail).

Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) has been nominated for jump of the year for this stalled forward during the PWA Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival, which the twins organized. Daida nailed this perfect stalled forward during her semi-final, she eventually finished in second place overall after a monumental fight with her sister, Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne).

In the off season of last year Iballa headed over to Western Australia in search of some perfect waves. As you can see from this photo the 2012 PWA Wave World Champion scored some epic waves and has therefore been nominated for the biggest wave of the year.

Justyna Sniady also ventured over to the beautiful wind and waves of Western Australia, and just to prove that even the pros don’t get it right 100% of the time, Justyna has nominated herself for wipe out of the year on a monster set, also at Margaret River below.

Antoine Albeau became World Champion in the men’s slalom fleet, ahead of last year’s Champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck. Whilst, in the women’s fleet, Valerie Arrighetti and Karin Jaggi finished on joint points (with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd each). Antonine Albeau also has a brand new website, with all the latest news from the now 20 time World Champion, check it out here.

Gollito Estredo showed his dominance in the men’s freestyle fleet, with three event wins to take the title, with Kiri Thode in second. As Sarah-Quita, won the only women’s event to take another world title for herself, with Laure Treboux.

In the waves, Philip Koster again became World Champion ahead of rival Victor Fernandez. Whilst in the women’s fleet, Iballa to the win ahead of sister Daida.

Good morning from another windy day in Pozo. Conditions are looking a little flatter this morning, so we are waiting for the tide to push in and the waves to ramp up.

PWA Gran Canaria. Judges hit the water early morning before the waves come through!

Competition will then resume with the mens elimination, which will run from heat 17 up to 22. After this the finals will take place; women’s losers, followed by men’s losers, then women’s final and the men’s final.

Still going strong in the men’s fleet from the UK are Robby Swift, Phil Horrocks, Ross Williams and John Skye. They’ve all got tough heats ahead, especially Horrocks on takes on the formidable Koester and Swift who will go head to head with Browne.

The women’s finals look like they will be tight between Laure and Karin, and of course the winners final is sure to produce some incredible action from both of the twins.

We also spotted this great video from a little while back with yet more action from Daida and Iballa.

The 2012 Fuerteventura Wave Classic kicks off in the Canaries on the 17th March – and there is a space available for one lucky lady sailor to join the world’s best. Maybe a UK sailor will be jetting off to compete alongside multiple world champion Iballa Moreno…

The FWC had this to say;

“The Fuerte Wave Classic 2012 organisation is looking for a girl to participate in the this years competition on Fuerte´s North Shore. Iballa Ruano Moreno, Fanny Aubet and Nicole Boronat are alreay on the entrylist. Due to a last minute change, there is a free spot for a female rider. Free accomodation, airport shuttle and much more is guaranteed. The FWC is mainly about windsurfing, but it would be necassary to have surfing or SUP knowledge and not being scared of bigger waves breaking over lava reefs.”
