OB (OnBoard), developed by the RYA (the people who run sailing in the UK), is a programme to help introduce sailing and windsurfing as a sport for you – whatever your needs and ability.

Working with clubs across the UK, OB makes getting into sailing and windsurfing easy. Even if you live miles from the sea, you can experience the best of sailing on lakes, estuaries and rivers in your area!

Sailing and windsurfing have everything, from a cool and sociable relaxing leisure experience to high adrenalin, high-performance sport. OB gets you out on the water, teaches you new skills and lets you have great fun too!

Hove Beach is just one mile down from where the Brighton PWA events used to be held. It has a diverse range of conditions suitable for all abilities. Hove Lagoon itself is about the size of a football pitch and is only waist deep all the way across. It offers sheltered flat-water conditions ideal for beginners and intermediates; a great place to learn for adults and children alike.

10 meters away, across the promenade, is Hove Beach where the fun begins. Summer sea breezes offer perfect blasting and freestyle conditions for intermediate windsurfers. Great for practicing those carve gybes, waterstarts, spocks, big macs, and those big kahuna burgers!

However, once those low pressures start tracking across the waves start pushing in. A typical force 5 plus can easily see head high waves providing excellent and very challenging conditions. Just check out the video and see for yourself.

Fees: To use the Lagoon and all the facilities you pay £8 per day or you can join the club from £22.50 per month and use all their equipment as well.
NO charges for parking or launching on the beach.

Beach Faces:

South

Best Wind Direction:

The beach: South-west. This produces the best jumping conditions. Westerly winds provide some excellent wave riding conditions. If the wind has any East in it, then the sea is usually quite flat, so great for blasting and freestyle.

The lagoon: Wind direction does not matter. The wind will never get stronger than a force 4 due to it being so sheltered. However, if a storm comes through it can get quite gusty.

Best Wind Direction For Waves:

South-west pushes in the best waves, and makes for great jumping and riding. If it has been windy for a few days and then swings a bit more westerly then you can get get some pretty good riding. Most of the sailing at Hove is starboard tack.

Not Good:

Southerly wind. The waves make it very hard to launch.

Tide:

Low to mid tide is best for all levels. At high tide the shore dump can be very large and off-putting. The best waves occur when the tide is on the push.

What’s On The Bottom:

At high tide, stones. At low tide, sand.

Any Hazards:

An old wooden groyne to the left of the launch area, only exposed on a spring low tide.

Other Water Users:

A few dinghy sailors in the summer.

Suitability / Levels:

The lagoon: Brilliant for beginners. The sheltered conditions allow you to master the technique required to windsurf properly on the sea. Plus you won’t drift off anywhere (accept to the other side of the lagoon!)

The beach: Intermediate to Pro
The summer sea breezes produce flat to choppy water sailing ideal for blasting and freestyle. However when it gets above a Force 5, the waves make for very challenging conditions. Your waterstart needs to be bomb proof, as does your launching technique through the shorebreak.

Wipeout Factor:

On a big day, go big or go home!
However we can launch our safety boat in pretty much any conditions, so kit breakages are not normally a problem.
We use a ZAP CAT as our safety boat. This is a South African Surf Rescue boat, with a 50hp on the back. These boats are designed to cope with waves much larger than we see in the United Kingdom, so we can offer safety in most conditions provided the tide is not too high. (Our instructors love doing rescue when it’s windy due to the amount of airtime these boats get.)

Instruction:

Hove Lagoon Watersports: This is an RYA recognised centre, and offers instruction for all levels both on the lagoon and the sea. They offer a Start to Windsurf package for £99. Or have some private tuition over 2 hours for £50. Click here for all instruction packages and costs.
The Club offers a unique Gym style membership. You can become a member of Hove Lagoon from as little as £22.50 per month.
This then entitles you to unlimited equipment hire for as long as you like, whenever you like. We have a very diverse range of equipment ranging from beginner to the latest wave and freestyle kit. Most of our sails are Hot Sails Maui, and most of our boards are Quatro. You also get safety cover for your membership fee, along with free clinics once a week.
Click here for Membership details. Or emailinfo@hovelagoon.co.uk or Tel. 01273 424842.

Kit Hire:

Kit is available to hire on the Lagoon for £15 per hour to non-members. Contact Hove Lagoon Watersports. Details above.

Friendly Factor:

From spring to summer we have a lot of members who come down whether it is windy or not. On a windy day, at the weekend, expect to see around 25 to 30 sailors out. After sailing, hop into the Club House for a beer and a chat.

No Wind Alternatives:

Surfable?:

Yes, but usually when there are waves there is wind. The Hot Pipes, 5 mins down the coast, can produce some excellent surfing. Ask in the Club House.

BSA Slalom Series event 5 – Hove Lagoon, Supported by Fanatic, North, ION

The South Coast of England has been providing windsurfers with awesome conditions since time began with cool sea breezes and rolling swells, with the coming week being no exception. For this the 5th Round of the heavily fought BSA the wind has been ordered and the beach has been laid down at Hove Lagoon for what could be the best windsurfing weekend of your life, K66 featuring Fanatic, North and ION plans to bring this beautiful seaside town to life with the colour and flare that windsurfing offers. Hove lagoon offers perfect conditions for beginners, on its waist deep lagoon, to professionals, on the beautiful Channel, as well as a coffee house providing that little boost to your day.

Hove town, with its perfect lawns, spawning sunbathers and fitness classes, overlooks the ocean and with shops and restaurants within walking distance this really is a beautiful place – and with a sea breeze forecasted Saturday and Sunday with a max of 20mph both days and 24 degree temperatures things really couldn’t be any better.

Whether this will be your first event or you are competing for the overall Title come down and enjoy the ambiance of the water sports world – and if the wind decides to leave us out then the fun begins with light wind blasting and Freestyle events planned, also SUP boards will be available with all the major brands having their demo gear available for use.

Prizes from North, Fanatic, ION and Sportif will be allocated to top 3 in each division. We also have major prizes that will be for the top in each division for our two events, Hove and Worthing later in the year, so you have to show up at both to receive the big prices.

The Party:

Trevor Funnell has an important announcement re EFPKT Event at Hove Lagoon on 5/6 June.

Downer...

In the last few years there have been many UKWA windsurfing events at Hove Lagoon with overnight camping and daytime parking always allowed on the promenade.

Brighton and Hove City Council have just decided to rigidly stick to their rules and have completely banned vehicles from the promenade at any time of the day or night.

They have also refused to allow overnight parking at and severely restricted vehicle access to the Lagoon itself, as well as warned that local on street parking restrictions will be enforced.

Despite a lot of negotiations, pleading and promises from myself as well as the Lagoon management the council will not accept any compromises.

There are no campsites or other parking areas within a reasonable distance so this has made it impossible to hold a large windsurfing event at that location and no alternatives are available.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the short notice and any inconvenience it may cause but it is with regret that we must now cancel this event.

We will of course try to find another venue and reschedule the event for a later date, we will advise you of this in the near future.

The newly formed European Freestyle Tour for Kids hits Hove lagoon on the 5th and 6th of June. The third event in the tour is timed to take advantage of the maximum sea breeze effect at Hove, there are already entries in from Europe and it is getting a great deal of interest from the UK freestyle scene.

There are categories for youths and juniors under 20, under 17, under 15 and under 13 so every age group and standard is covered, whether you are into the highest level moves or just learning to heli tack you should enter this event if only for the experience.

There will be a huge barbecue on Saturday evening and with entries expected from all over Europe a great family atmosphere will prevail. The legendary Duncan Coombes who is the PWA Head Judge will be running the competition so entrants will also get a taste of how the World Tour is run.

Anyone who has been to Hove will know that the facilities there are second to none, a great beach, the lagoon for learning, a huge range of kit to hire and a clubhouse with all the amenities including a café.

There are restaurants and pubs close by like Vbites and the Blue Lagoon, Ocean Sports Surf Shop and Woodies American style café/bar are just round the corner with Surfladle windsurfing shop just a short drive away.

The entry fee is only £25.00 and there will be free food for competitors with loads of prizes provided by Surfladle, Ocean Sports, Fanatic and North.

For further information contact Trevor Funnell, email t5orev@freedom255.com
