Francisco Goya is not only a legend of windsurfing, but heads up two of the most iconic brands in windsurfing. Francisco shares his passion for wavesailing in the current issue of Boards; the Autumn Winter Wave Annual and now we’ve spotted him reading through the rest of the mag too!

Francisco loves the new magazine, saying it really brings everything to do with wavesailing together and looks fantastic. If you’ve yet to purchase the Autumn Winter Wave Annual check out Francisco’s ‘Welcome to Wavesailing’ introduction piece below. There’s a lot more in the magazine too from the likes of Philip Koster, Thomas Traversa, Bernd Roediger, Levi Siver, Klaas Voget, etc full full details of what’s in the magazine and how to purchase head here.

“Wavesailing! I feel energy coming out of my skin as I say that word. The truth is that I’m still as passionate as ever about it; from gliding across a small wave to riding at Ho’okipa, this is my way of seeing the world.

Windsurfing involves so many elements: wind, water, gravity, the board and the sail, plus a little rubber to bring it all together. And of course You, the rider, attempting to take control with every part of your body. Everything moves and changes, the conditions, angles, wind direction and consistency, making wavesailing one of the most continually challenging sports around.

Francisco Goya's introduction to the annual

Ever wonder why people that have been windsurfing their whole life still fall on their gybes? Our environment is not fixed, just because you manage to pull off a move once doesn’t necessarily mean you will be able to do it again. This complexity or “simplicity when you are in the zone” is what I believe captivates us and leaves us wanting more.

There is something magical about being propelled by something you can’t see. I still find it hard to wrap my mind around it all. How we can hit ramps full speed, ride the biggest waves, all with just a board and thin membrane called a sail – it’s crazy!

It took me a while to develop and understand my style. Growing up, style was one word that I didn’t understand – I don’t care as much about what is or isn’t cool, but more about the essence of things. However, later I came to understand this word in a different way; style being the state of mind or what you get as you watch somebody ride. Everybody is telling a story when they ride: their past, present and future, basically our lives. I call this philosophy in action. That to me is what defines style.

It is too hard for me to name one sailor I have looked up to; someone whose style I follow, as everybody brings something different. What I do know is that style is always evolving. You can’t stop that…..”

Quatro

The KT Quad remains a similar shape and graphics, while the LS Quad has been fully updated. The updated LS Quad holds all the qualities of the LS concept; versatility, quick planing transitioning to a top end speed, spontaneous turns; all infused with Keith latest shaping experience.
The line is enriched with a larger choice of volumes making it available to all sailors:
VOLUMES: 72-78-84-90-98-110
The new LS signature graphic designs are based on Levi’s vision of windsurfing.
New Pads will enhance sailing experience with a new grooving, dual density and quick tail for premium sailing experience.

Quatro also introduce the new LS Thruster. Thruster is the result of month of sailing and perfecting a unique board. It offers a different approach to wave sailing then the Quad; more predictable though the turns, easier to sail on the back foot…This board is the easiest board to transition from a single fin to a mufti fin.

The Tempo (twin fin) and FSW continue with similar shapes and graphics.

Goya Boards

The line shapes remain similar, including the Quad, One, Air and Surf models. Though all boards have been updated, with additional volumes and a thruster set up now available for the One.

The Storm has also seen some progression, with a more compact shape and increased range and manoeuvrability, plus new pro edition colours are available too.

We catch up with Francisco Goya to introduce us to the technology behind their new 2012 masts…

A small amount of mast bend...

Boards: Can you explain to us what is so special about the masts?

Francisco: To explain everything included into our masts in a short paragraph would be hard so perhaps we should go in to more detail.

Boards: Ok, so tell us about the materials and how it will affect these masts?

Francisco: Everything starts with the material, 90% Carbon with 33 Million pounds per square inch.

A combination of Diagonal Fibers is what allows Diaganol Flex, the masts in return not only bend but also twist further, that was the biggest impact we had on durability since the skinny masts development started.

Boards: The great RDM/SDM debate continues. RDM’s never quite matched SDM’s in length, are you a little closer to this?

Francisco: Bend and Reflex like a SDM was the dream, today is the reality and that is how we are able to go up to 490 RDM where most RDM’s stop at 430.

Boards: A huge number of masts require both the top and bottom sections to be the same, can you tell us about your interchangables?

Francisco: Interchangables: Yes, you can swap them to customise your bend or sail size, maybe you just need 2 bottoms and 1 top then that is all you will get.

Boards: Thanks very much and anything else you would like to add?

Francisco: Yes. Consistency: There is not even 1mm of difference between any one of our masts, long gone are the days we were bending masts looking for a good one.

If it wasn’t the best mast out there we wouldn’t use it. I hope it doesn’t come across too arrogant but this is the true.‘

Goya Masts – In Detail

310 - 490 RDM's

Let’s TwistAgain

2012 DIRECT DRIVE SERIES™ – INCORPORATING DIAGONAL FLEX™

Diagonal Flex™
The main difference between Goya masts and those of all competition is Diagonal Flex™. No other mast brand offers this technology.

Diagonal Flex™ does not only allow Goya masts to bend to amazing curves, just like all those laboratory photos you know, but while in that shape, they are also enabled to twist extremely lively, working in close synergy with the Goya sails.

The difference resulting from this feature is expressed by a very simple number: Last winter, also known as the big wave season, between all Goya Team Riders, shops and distributors, we broke a total of three (3) masts. This was only possible through the Diagonal Flex™ technology developed by Goya Windsurfing.

90% Carbon
Another essential building block of our masts is the use of an all new Goya exclusive Carbon lay up that makes our extreme bend and twist curves possible in the first place. 90% Pre-Preg. 33 million pounds per square inch.

Wall Thickness
The equation is very simple. Our wall thickness is at least 50% thicker than the rest of the market, while still being among the lightest weights.

How is that possible? Again, it’s no magic, everything starts with the most advance materials available, built with the same technology that is used in the aerospace industry.

Bend and Reflex like SDM
That sounds impossible but when you see that we offer our RDM masts at 490, doesn’t that make you curious how quick and stable our 400 is?

Our mast layup gradually adapts to each sizing, enabaling us to go from 12 IMCS on our 310 all the way up to 30 IMCS on the 490, while still keeping the same bending percentages or even getting a stiffer bottom section on the larger masts, making our RDM masts outperform SDM masts. And let’s not even talk about durability.

Interchangeable
Yes, all our tops and bottoms can be mixed and that is why we also sell them separately, if you got a new 4.2 sail and you need a shorter mast, all you need is a 370 top or if you are getting a new 5.3 sail just get the 430 bottom.

For the chart: Starting from a full mast (Example: 400 Top/Bottom) if you need to go smaller just get the 370 top and if you need to go bigger get the 430 bottom.

By doing this you are allowing the mast to remain close to top flex which keeps your draft lower and forward.

Consistency
Goya masts have the smoothest and most consistent built in the industry, made possible through higher pressure and better materials. There is not even 1mm of difference on the bend between our masts.

Heritage
The US based factory that we authorize to build our masts does not come from building fishing poles and sport gear, this factory produces for NASA and Boing, amongst others.

Graphic
We let our material be the graphic as the last thing we wanted was to have to carry 100 extra grams of stickers & paint into a double forward only to look cool. We rather try and move cool.

Let it be told
If this wasn’t the best mast out there, our team wouldn’t use it. We hope you never have to swim back across an impact zone or from where you were out freeriding but if you do please come try our masts before you go buy your next one.

Francisco Goya headed over to West Wittering Windsurf Club on Saturday 9th July. With the help of Rick from Zero Gravity, he brought a selection of 2011 and 2012 Goya boards and sails for demo.

Francisco and Rick arrived in the early morning and were greeted by warm sunshine and a blissful, summer, 20 knot breeze. It was low tide at West Wittering and the ‘trench’ just inside Chichester Harbour mouth provided some of the best possible demo conditions – 5.3 weather, warm water and hot sunshine!

Francisco Goya has an incredible amount of infectious enthusiasm for the sport and was getting everyone on the water on the new gear, running from sail to sail to make sure that not a single piece of gear went out without him tweaking it to perfection whilst explaining exactly what and why he was doing it.

Francisco headed down to the water to coach the kids from the water’s edge and later mentioned that he couldn’t believe how good the sailing was at West Wittering and how perfect it was for everyone to get out on the water together.

The conditions in West Wittering on days like this are always easy and fun for all – flat water in the lagoons and trench and small waves breaking onto the sandbars for jumping.

Everyone made the most of the Goya demo gear, which included the Goya 2011 Custom Quads, Goya Ones, Goya FXR freeride boards and 2011 and 2012 Eclipse, Guru and Banzai Sails. 2XS have been selling Goya boards for a while now and will be shortly adding the Goya Sail quiver to the website.

The West Wittering Windsurf Club barbecue was fired up for lunch and Francisco, who is normally nearly vegan, was taken in by the smell of Waitrose finest…

It was a truly great day and one of the best demos we have ever seen. The 60 year age range present gave testament to this and more importantly than anything else, everyone had fun!

What more could you want from a Goya demo day than the actual Francisco Goya himself joining us at Chalkwell beach last Saturday. Showing us the latest in Goya 2012 Sails and allowed the locals full use of the current 2011 boards and sails.

The demo started off with everyone on the water planing with 5/6 metre sails. Every board and sail got used and was well liked. We also had Aleksy and Megan Gayda trying out the quad boards and the new 2012 Banzai sail. It is a four-batten wave sail that is set to be a very different sail to all the rest on the market. It is super-light, manoeuvrable and so powerful. Aleksy was fully powered on a whole square metre less than others on the water. Aleksy was pulling off forwards and nailed his first duck tack. The Banzai only goes up to 4.9 but should be enough to get going in 15 to 20 knots.

What with the BBQ and great company the day could not get any better until Francisco finished the demo by getting on his board and showing us why he was once world champion. But if that was not enough Francisco then became lifeguard for one of the guys who got stuck 200 metres from shore. After swimming to his rescue Francisco then spent 30 minutes in the water teaching him how to waterstart.

We would also like to thank the guys from Zero Gravity for a 6 hour round trip to bring the nicest guy in windsurfing to SX Watersports.

The Maui boys behind Goya and Quatro have been working on their new 4-batten wave sail. Reports are that the sail is really amazing, super light and super performing. And check this out; how many companies can you say boast the talent of these guys? Out ripping Ho’okipa recently were global brand manager Laurent Guillemin, sail designer Jason Diffin, managing director Lalo Goya, plus owner and developer Francisco Goya. The idea that the company is run by windsurfers was a good one. However, no-one said that they fully ripped! Have a sneaky look here.

The wind did not disappoint and with steady 4.7 weather the final decider between Kevin Pritchard and Francisco Goya was on. Enough said really; watching 2 sailors of such calibre battle it out is pretty awesome and it was Kevin who took the win.

Second placed Francisco Goya

A huge shout out has to go out to Sam Bittner who made this entire event happen. With no previous experience of running an event she seamlessly made it happen – no doubt with the support of many friends and all the sponsors. This was a pretty large milestone in US windsurfing because the last time a wave event took place was 10 years ago. From all the competitors and spectators: THANK YOU SAM!

British expat Tanya Saleh (tanyak297.blogspot.com) reports from day one of this rejuvenated American classic…

<img class="size-full wp-image-19790" title="Pistol-River-Comp-I-082" src="http://cdn2.coresites.mpora.com/boards/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Pistol-River-Comp-I-082.jpg" alt="Timo Mullen.
Pistol River is a spot near a town called Gold Beach in the very southern part of Oregon, USA. The Pistol River Wave Bash used to be a regular pilgrimage for US sailors on their wave tour, but the last time it happened was 10 years ago.

Sam Bittner, Maui resident made the huge leap and commited to make it happen once again.

Skippers meeting

For those of us who arrived a few days before the start of the event; we have been totally blown away with just how windy this place is non-stop, day after day. The guys have regularly been sailing 3.7s fully powered.

Wednesday was the first day of competition and full single eliminations were run across all categories.

Awesome US talent, Tyson Poor

The majority of the entrants have either come from the Gorge or Maui resulting in a star studded event. In addition to that Sam Neal also came over from the UK, and last minute surprise – Timo even came over with JC.

Again the wind did not disappoint – the guys were on 3.7′s/4.2′s all day and heats were run through until dark. The action was pretty awesome to watch and should get even more interesting when the Shadow Box Jump Off takes place over the weekend.

Francisco Goya

Men’s first round results:

1st Kevin Pritchard

2nd Francisco Goya

3rd Kai Katchadourian
