Situated on the edge of the Tendring Peninsula on the North-East coast of Essex, Clacton is probably one of the best sailing spots in the county. The construction of fishtail groynes has resulted in the formation of sandy coves that produce great jumping conditions at high tide, and glassy water at low tide.

The town itself, a pre-war seaside boom town, now epitomises most things bad about Essex. However, new roads and a direct train line to London are causing a bit of a renaissance.

There are a number of spots to sail off, all revolving around a place called West Beach, which lies south of the pier. The best place (where most of the locals congregate) is a small green area next to the Martello Tower.

Beach Faces:

South-East.

Best Wind Direction:

South, South-West, South-East, North-East

Best Wind Direction For Waves:

A strong SW wind can give decent onshore bump and jump conditions, with a moderate shorebreak at high tide. NE winds will give port tack wave riding if there is a storm. In both cases, to get any hint of a rideable wave, there needs to be a huge amount of swell and wind.

Not Good:

North and North-Westerly wind directions should be avoided (If it is high tide, then Point Clear, near St Osyth to the South, or Walton Backwaters, to the North, provides good alternatives in this direction).

Tide:

Mid to high tide incoming is best for waves. Low tide is great for intermediates, as it is possible to stand a long way out.

What’s On The Bottom:

Sand.

Any Hazards:

Be sure to give the fishtail groynes a wide berth. At spring tides there is a lot of current running into and out of the Thames Estuary. Bear this in mind if it is wind with tide, especially if you are anywhere near the pier.

Other Water Users:

Kite surfers, a few jet skiers in the summer, swimmers and yachts.

Suitability / Levels:

Beginners to advanced. It is calm enough to teach and good for every level, depending on the wind strength. Wind against tide produces constant broad reaching, which is perfect for blasting and gybing.

Wipeout Factor:

The shorebreak at high tide can be quite munchy. The windier it is the more chance of a wipeout, but no mast high waves to worry about.

Instruction:

None, but nearby Skisurf in Colchester can organise instruction at Alton Water (see archive section) Tel. 01206 502000 info@skisurf.co.uk

Friendly Factor:

The locals led by Dave, Martin and Adrian are a good bunch, and the sailing is really sociable. However, they do tend to sail as far as the horizon, so be warned!

Dave White, Nick Green and the Whiteboarders team are often seen out. Boardseekermag Features Editor Clyde Waite is also a local. Gregg Dunnett from Boards Magazine also originally hails from Clacton.

Local Knowledge / Secrets:

During the summer there is a regular north-easterly sea breeze which gives good chop out to sea, and dead flat water in Martello Bay.

Gale Force NE winds can produce some nice waves (very rare, some of the pictures are from one of these days, so don’t be confused!)

Extra:

Used to regularly host BWA events, but now the UKWA have moved national events to Mersea Island.

How To Get There:

From the M25 take the A12 eastbound. From the east and north of the country take the A14, exit at Ipswich and take the A12 towards Colchester.

At the Colchester A12 bypass, exit onto the A120 and follow the signs to Clacton. As the dual carriage ends, continue on the A133 (Clacton By Pass). Continue towards the town centre and then the sea front. Once you hit the beach, take a right and drive south of the pier. You will pass a large ‘green’ on your left between the road and the sea, this is West Beach. Continue to the left bend, and take the first left after the car park. Continue past the Martello Tower and find anywhere to park. Rig up and go sailing.

This quiet spot on the Tendring Peninsular offers some really nice coastal windsurfing and is a good spot for an introduction to the sea. Sheltered from South-west swells, it does not get too intimidating until it is really windy. If you intend to sail here a lot then there is a friendly sailing club right on the beach that is worth joining.

Tide:

It is not advisable to windsurf at high tide as the sea comes right up to the sea wall. Low tide on the way is best and wind against tide is even better. On spring tides this area has a strong current channelling in and out of the Thames estuary. In these conditions take a bigger fin and sail than normal.

What’s On The Bottom:

Clay and sand hence the brown colour of the sea, honest!

Other Water Users:

The sailing club holds regular races and there are a few swimmers in the summer.

Suitability / Levels:

There are not so many around these days but Simon Pearce, Jono and Gregg Dunnett, Clyde Waite, Tim Davies and Saul Lindsell all learnt their skills here in the good old days!

Local Knowledge / Secrets:

There is a seabreeze that is windiest at Holland on Sea in the summer. I reckon it is because of the local accelerating factor (the cliff) combined with the large, flat land mass of the peninsular! It can get up to 5.0 metre weather and will always be sunny. If the conditions are right it will come in from the North-east during spring and summer. If you do get what is locally called a ‘Roger’ then you will have to wobble out the first hundred yards to the windline!

Extra:

Clacton is just down the road as an alternative venue and for more social windsurfing.

How To Get There:

From the M25 take the A12 to Colchester. If you are coming from the North, then travel on the A14 to Ipswich then take the A12 to Colchester. At Colchester take the A120 then A133 to Clacton on Sea. Before entering Clacton you will find a large roundabout with the options Clacton and Holland on Sea. Follow the signs to Holland on Sea. You will pass a B&Q and a Ford dealership and Happy Valley golf. At the end of this road take a left to Holland on Sea. Take the second right into Kings Avenue. The beach is at the end of this road!

Check out British freestyler Max Rowe‘s latest release:

Surprisingly enough I’ve had loads of time on the water whilst I’ve been at home. I’ve even managed to compile a video with all my footage of sailing at home from September until now. This is a first for me, as I’ve never had enough clips from home to warrant making a video. Could be to do with the amount of time I’ve spent there over the last few years! But now with more events going on at home and having to travel from home to go to events I’ve definitely been spending a bit more time there.

The main spot featured in the video is Point Clear, St Oysth, Essex. It’s not a spot I sailed once whilst I was growing up but after getting to know Whitey ( Dave White ) he couldn’t understand why anyone would bother going anywhere else. So I checked it out a few years ago, I rarely sail anywhere else if I’m at home. It is amazing as far as flat-water freestyle spots go. The rest of the footage is from the south coast whilst I was down there for the competitions. Big thanks to everyone at West Wittering as they’ve been extremely accommodating in letting us sail there and helping out with photographers etc. Check out www.2xs.co.uk yet another amazing spot. The best day we had there I sailed on the waves at high tide with some epic jumping conditions before the tide dropped to reveal the freestyle “trench”. The other main spot is the Esso Garage on Hayling Island.

What more could you want from a Goya demo day than the actual Francisco Goya himself joining us at Chalkwell beach last Saturday. Showing us the latest in Goya 2012 Sails and allowed the locals full use of the current 2011 boards and sails.

The demo started off with everyone on the water planing with 5/6 metre sails. Every board and sail got used and was well liked. We also had Aleksy and Megan Gayda trying out the quad boards and the new 2012 Banzai sail. It is a four-batten wave sail that is set to be a very different sail to all the rest on the market. It is super-light, manoeuvrable and so powerful. Aleksy was fully powered on a whole square metre less than others on the water. Aleksy was pulling off forwards and nailed his first duck tack. The Banzai only goes up to 4.9 but should be enough to get going in 15 to 20 knots.

What with the BBQ and great company the day could not get any better until Francisco finished the demo by getting on his board and showing us why he was once world champion. But if that was not enough Francisco then became lifeguard for one of the guys who got stuck 200 metres from shore. After swimming to his rescue Francisco then spent 30 minutes in the water teaching him how to waterstart.

We would also like to thank the guys from Zero Gravity for a 6 hour round trip to bring the nicest guy in windsurfing to SX Watersports.

Adam Sims, winner of the first FreestyleXpression contest of 2011, reports from last weekend’s event in Essex…

Adam Sims at Point Clear, by Dave White

The run up to the weekend was a hype of excitement as people sent out texts left right and centre trying to work out what the exact plan was. The call went out on Wednesday and the final call on Thursday evening. Point Clear, Essex it was to be.

We rocked up at 11/12 am on the Saturday and were competing by 1pm. Heat one got underway, Max Rowe, Oscar Carmichael, Ben Lee and Steve Thorne threw down their best moves to make it through to the final. Oscar Carmichael and Max Rowe sealed the deal with consistent high level moves.

In the Second heat, myself and John Palmer managed to storm through with a few safe moves each and then some of the new skool moves just to be sure.

The final got underway. I didn’t see too much of the others sailing as I was fully focused on landing my own moves, but every time I looked up everyone was landing every move they went for. Oscar even stepped it up and very nearly got a culo and a double spock. Funnels, punetas, spocks, switch konos, shakas, ponchs, forwards, air funnels, air bobs, flakas, air flakas and more were all laid down in the final. I had no idea who had taken it when we came into the beach and was super happy to hear I had won. Palmer had taken second and Max Rowe in third.

The following day we visited Marconi’s, an awesome low tide spot. With some great stunt ramps in the middle. Videos and photos were taken but we decided not to go ahead with a double elimination.

It was a great event and the format works extremely well, bring on the next one!
