With two wave rides and one jump  to count the competition was set to bring the true wave riders to the forefront.

The conditions turned onshore, with the waves disappearing slightly and the wind dropping so Duncan Coombs has made the call that no more competition will take place today.

It has already been an unexpected start to the competition for many, with a few early upsets.

Surprise entrant Scott McKercher has been on fire today, taking the win against Ross Williams. In the next heat third placed man from Pozo Dario Ojeda struggled against young gun Martin, who was sailing exceptionally well in the relatively late conditions. Ojeda took the win, but it was a close call with the judges.

John Skye broke his mast in his heat against Martin ten Hoeve, and struggled to recover, with the big Dutch man taking the win. After sailing an incredible first heat Leon Jamaer faced Fernandez and Fernandez took the win, opening with an incredible double and then continuing the heat with the same form.

Local boy Adam Lewis sailed convincingly through his first heat, to meet Voget in the next round. This was probably the closest heat of the day, the guys being tied on scores and Voget winning only on count back taking the best jump. Lewis looks fired up to take it on in the double.

The next big upset was Browne being taken out by Omar Sanchez, Browne landed a solid one handed back loop but lacked the wave rides to back it up. Browne looked underpowered in his heat, and shortly after this the competition was called to a halt.

We will resume in the morning with the tank Kenneth Danielsen taking on Jamie Hancock and Ricardo Campello facing Arthur Arutkin.

The competition will continue to heats 16, before sending the ladies onto the water for the first round of their competition including Irish lady Katie McAnena in her first PWA competition!

Day one here in Tenerife and the conditions are already firing. Some solid waves are building in the bay and the strong winds forecast are already blowing through.

Registration is under way, skippers meeting is at 12.30 with the first possible start of 13.00.

Sad news from yesterday is the talented French lady, Alice Arutkin dislocated her shoulder and is therefore out of the competition. Apparently Alice is doing well despite the injury, we will catch up with her later for a full update. 

All the top guys have been out since the end of Pozo. Some chose to take it easy yesterday, but others hit the water for one last sail before the event.

The video was shot on the 18th of April, where Jochen Stolz caught a nice session, filmed by  Bartek Jankowski, at El Cabezo Beach Tenerife before work. The result is a nice small clip of the wavesailor, who emigrated 13 years ago from Germany to windy El Medano / Tenerife. Looks like he knows the spots like his backyard. Jochen was sailing on the Fanatic Quad 86l and Simmer Icon 4.2m. You will see some stalled forwards, sick wave360 and high one handed backloops, check out the crashes as well! Summer is coming and looks like the Worldcup is coming to Tenerife. This is Cabezo when it really delivers…

Top slalom sailors Andrea Cucchi and Pascal Toselli have collaborated with one of the local windsurf schools to set up a 4-mark downwind slalom course. The difference being that the course isn’t just reserved for the top-flight racers – anyone and everyone is welcome to come and have a go on the course. Whether it’s just for a bit of fun or you want to try and keep up with the PWA sailors training in Tenerife, go and get involved!

The Point-7/Windsurf Club 77 Slalom course

The course will be laid out from about 1pm to 5pm everyday from February to April and Andrea and Pascal are already loving it.

Pascal said about the new training setup: “Training in Tenerife is already a paradise; you can sail with all different sail sizes as it’s windy every day. With the marks it’s super motivating to go on the water now! We have had them setup for 3 days now and I think I already did 50 heats.”

Andrea: It took a few days of work to get it all set, but now it’s been 3 days already that we are killing each other around the course. It’s a true luxury to have this available each day. In 2 months of sailing and I’m feeling very fit. After the first 4 heats we did, I realised that racing is much more hard work then just sailing around and free gybing. I think we all need to say a big thank you to Luca Orsi of Windsurf Club 77 Tenerife, who made this possible.”

In the next few weeks Point-7 are expecting a load of their slalom team to be out in Tenerife training, so if you want to pit yourself against the best or just have a bit of fun, go and say hi – but before you do that, it might be worth checking out Andrea’s golden rules for slalom excellence!

2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup, Planet Win 365 – Event Summary: Tenerife bursts back into the limelight and reasserts itself as a wave sailing haven allowing Philip Koster and Daida Ruano Moreno to stamp down their authority on the second stop of the 2011 wave tour.

The world’s most incredible wave sailors were blown away by the insane conditions that Tenerife delivered between 14th-20th July. Seven days of mast high waves and howling winds ensured the official competition was completed in record time and the remainder of the days were spent relaxing and enjoying the El Medano wave sailing Mecca.

Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine) and Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) secured their second victory on the 2011 world tour, despite attacks from wave sailing demons Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL 360) and Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) in the double elimination, leading to a dramatic end as the sailors had to confirm their dominance in the nail biting super-finals.

Men’s Fleet

From the outset the crowds on the beach knew they were in for an exciting week as the world’s most radical wave riders hit the water from the word go. Faultless conditions for the opening afternoon of competition allowed the majority of the single elimination to be completed and many dramas to unfold.

Brit, Adam Lewis (Starboard / Point-7) made his debut appearance on the PWA world tour, defeating US wave ripper Kai Lenny (Naish / Naish). Lewis amazed the judges with his super late smacks on the wave, allowing him to pass through his first high pressure heat.

Round two saw many of the top seeded sailors defend their positions and advance into the top sixteen. Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde) ripped apart every wave to advance past high-flying Alex Sanllehy. Koster proved that he wasn’t just a one location wonder, destroying Albert Pijoan with his huge stunts and El Medano wave king Bruch made use of his local knowledge to take down Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / North / AL360).

Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Simmer / Dakine / MFC) looked to be on a high after his third place finish in Pozo, putting a stop to Peter Volwater’s (Fanatic / MauiSails) advances in the single elimination. Aggressive wave riding from Brazil’s Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) made sure the face of PWA TV Ben Proffitt (Simmer) returned back to his commentary booth and Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) suffered at the hands of Ross Williams (Tabou /Gaastra).

The highest scoring wave of the day was claimed by Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North / MFC). Fernandez Lopez spotted the set wave and went about pulling two astounding vertical cuts backs and a huge aerial off the lip. The judges were blown away by his performance and awarded him two 9s and an 8.

With diminishing wind and waves the sailors were released for the day. The second day of the competition produced another batch of perfect conditions allowing nine hours of back-to-back heats.

Koster kicked off the men’s heats with a colossal double forward loop to provide him with an early advantage over his opponent Swift. Meanwhile Seadi put a stop to Ojeda’s quest in the single with his slick wave riding.

On the other side of the elimination Bruch made use of his local knowledge to defeat Williams. In the first major upset of the day Australian high flier Jaeger Stone (Severne) amazed the judges with his distinctive top turns and control on the waves to sail passed the 2010 wave champion Fernandez Lopez.

Stone and Koster continued with their rampaged in heat 23, both sailors excelled on the waves taking down Seadi and Bruch, landing them a well-earned position in the winner’s final.

Men’s Final

The tide was at the optimum height for the men’s winners’ final allowing mast high waves to roll into the competition area. The sailors opened the heat with huge jumps, Koster landed a mammoth stalled double forward loop and Stone stuck a tweaked pushloop. With a jump in the bag the sailors focused their attention on to wave riding. Stone continued to wow the judges, pulling vertical top turns and two aerials on one colossal wave. Koster replied with an aggressive cut back sending a huge wall of spray into the air and then turning straight into a taka. Confident with his performance Koster entertained the crowds with a one handed and one footed backloop in the closing minutes of the heat. Koster was awarded the single elimination win at the awards ceremony on the beach.

Women’s Fleet

The women took to wave arena as the tide was at its lowest, making the conditions particularly tough. The fleet had to be extremely tactful during their heats to select the best waves and avoid the rocks.

Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) opened the competition with an enormous forward loop, keen to prove to her competitors that she meant business. Jaggi went on to defeat her opponent Julia Meijer, with a well-chosen wave enabling her to pull three smooth frontside turns.

Eva Oude Ophius (Naish / Naish) sailed her way to victory passed Alice Arutkin (Starboard / North) with a clean set of wave rides and a forward loop of her own.

First to fall victim to the rocks was Heike Reimann (Hot Sails) in her heat against Fanny Aubet (JP / NeilPryde). Both sailors focused on their wave riding which saw them quickly lose ground downwind. Aubet made a narrow escape over the rocks; however Reimann wasn’t quite so lucky, catching her fin and rendering her unable to complete the heat and therefore granting Aubet an easy pass into the next round.

The most impressive wave riding in the women’s fleet came from Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne). Alonso stole the show with a display of aggressive cut backs and accurate wave selection, guaranteeing the judges awarded her with maximal points and her entry into the second round.

The sisters Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) and Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) dominated heats 21, 22 and 23 defeating Aubet, Alonso, Laure Treboux (Fanatic / North) and Jaggi) respectively to earn them entry into the winner’s final.

Jaggi and Alonso were left to battle each other for valuable third place in the losers’ final. Jaggi opened the heat with her trademark forward loop, whilst Alonso focused on her super smooth wave riding. Alonso took the advantage in the final few minutes of the heat, landing a clean forward loop and selecting a huge wave to ride all the way to the inside, securing her third place finish.

Women’s Final

Tenerife witnessed a familiar sight on the PWA world tour, as the Moreno twins went head to head in the final. Iballa held the advantage in the opening few minutes of the heat, landing a stalled forward and then moving quickly onto a large wave to pull three aggressive turns. Both twins displayed an exceptional level of control of their equipment and made use of the whole competition area to land the largest jumps and select the finest waves. After her initial backloop crash, Daida pulled her performance back, picking out a mast high wave and landing two frontside aerials. She then focused on her jumps and landed an enormous stalled forward loop to take the victory.

Men’s Double Elimination

Eager to take advantage of the epic conditions the judges continued directly into the double elimination providing the sailors with the opportunity to cover up any mistakes made in the single and boosts their overall scores.

The standout sailor from the men’s fleet was Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra). The exceptionally talented Spaniard sailed through seven incredible heats to earn himself a position in the top six. Mussolini’s ability to select the finest waves and perform perfect wave 360s and takas saw him defeat Camille Juban (Gun / MFC), Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC), Proffitt, 2010 wave champion Fernandez Lopez, the wild Moroccan Boujmaa Guilloul (Starboard / Severne / Mystic) and finally a really close heat against Campello.

In the heat against Campello, the Venezuelan launched into action with a double forward loop, and quickly moved on to work on his wave scores, Mussolini struggled to find a ramp to launch off but stole the show with his epic wave riding. With no jump points, Mussolini was at a disadvantage throughout the heat, it came down to the final minute before he landed a perfect one handed and one footed backloop to secure the victory with a 5-0 decision from the judges.

The double elimination also observed Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC), Kenneth Danielsen (F2 / Simmer / MFC / Mystic) and McKercher (Starboard / Severne) dominate in their opening three heats of the double elimination earning them all thirteen place finishes.

The wild Moroccan Guilloul earned himself his highest ever finish in a PWA competition, working his way through three heats to raise his position to seventh. Guilloul impressed the judges with his super tweaked pushloops and his relaxed wave style on the wave.

With just a few remaining heats to complete the judges waited until the conditions were premium on the third day.

The men’s fleet kicked the day off with Mussolini taking on his close friend Bruch. Mussolini was hoping to continue with his rampage through the double elimination, however Bruch had other plans. Bruch opened the heat with a one-footed backloop, then picked up a wave and pulled three vertical top turns. Mussolini secured a solid wave score-nailing wave 360 but he was unable to find a jump ramp allowing Bruch to take the win with a 4-1 decision from the judges.

Ecstatic with his first win Bruch relaxed into his heat against Seadi. Once again the local favorite opened with a monster backloop and then made sure he ripped apart the biggest sets, whereas Seadi wasted a large part of the heat searching earnestly for a suitable ramp. Bruch went about landing wave 360s and well-timed cut backs to provide him with the advantage. With little time left on the clock Seadi began to panic and he started to hunt for waves to ride. Luck was on his ride and he managed to score the best wave in the heat with a backside 360 and three swift turns however it was too little too late and Bruch advanced.

Bruch then went onto challenge Stone to decide who would advance into the final. Bruch was really coming into his own by heat fifty, pulling super aggressive cut backs and sending walls of spray all over the place. Stone was selecting big waves and dominating his first turn but struggling to follow it up with a further maneuver. Consistent Bruch took full advantage of his local knowledge to pull some slick turns on the best waves, allowing him to advance in the final to face the mighty Koster.

Men’s Final

The opening jumps saw Koster rotate around a super-fast double forward loop, and Bruch drop out the sky on two pushloop attempts. Unhappy with his aerials Bruch stormed out the back of the arena and picked up an enormous wave, the local sailor continued with his wave rides throughout the heat outdoing himself with every turn. Koster was struggling to stay upright after his initial smacks. Koster held the advantage with the jumps up until the final minute when Bruch launched into a one-footed backloop. Bruch’s hard work paid off and he was awarded the win with a 2-1 decision from the judges.

Having taken down the event leader, Bruch now had to take him on again in a super-final to decide once and for all who would be crowned the event winner.

Men’s Super-final

The duo took to the water once again, enraged by his earlier performance Koster flew around his opening double forward loop landing bolt upright. The sailors picked up waves, but both fell off the back on initiating their maneuvers. Bruch picked up a big wave and dominated it all the way to the beach, Koster replied with his own equally impressive wave. Determined to take the win Koster launched into his second double forward loop but this time landed planning. The judges were amazed by his performance and awarded him the highest scores. Koster was announced the overall event winner at the prizing giving on the beach.

Women’s Double Elimination

The women’s fleet witnessed Arutkin and Japan’s Waka Nishida advance through their initial heats against Julia Meijer and Amanda Beenen (Dakine).

Aubet’s forward in the second round put a stop to Arutkin’s further developments in the double elimination and Treboux dominated in her heat against Nishida.

Treboux continued with her rampage in the double elimination playing her consistent card to defeat Reimann and Eva Tsape (F2/ North).

The judges witnessed a particularly close heat between Alonso and Jaggi; both of them made use of their experience and selected the finest waves that rolled through. Jaggi held the advantage with her jumps for the majority of the heat; however Alonso’s vertical cut backs ensured her rides were awarded higher points. Alonso sneaked through the initial heat of the day with a 3-2 decision from the judges.

Alonso moved on to face Iballa Ruano Moreno. Alonso continued with her incredible wave riding, however the might of Iballa, was too much to fend off as she landed a colossal back loop and selected two perfect waves to ride directly in front of the judges. The doors to the Moreno final were kept closed for Alonso as Iballa advanced.

Women’s Final

The twins Iballa and Daida Ruano Moreno, took centre stage once again and went to work displaying their most impressive moves. Iballa was fired up from her previous win and landed a clean backloop providing her with the advantage. She then went on to select the largest waves in the heat and take the biggest risks, working them frontside all the way to the inside, while Daida was playing it safe pulling her most consistent jumps and tackling the tamer waves upwind. Iballa was awarded for her efforts with the heat win, meaning the pair would have to enter the super-final to decide who would take the event title.

Women’s Super-final

Having seen her sisters’ tactics Daida was ready for battle, she opened the heat a smooth wave ride providing her with the early advantage. Eager to land a backloop Iballa went for six attempts but the ramps weren’t launching her high enough. Daida continued with her wave riding in front of the judges and then secured the heat win with a perfect backloop in the closing seconds.

Super session

The wind and waves continued to hammer El Medano’s coastline, providing outstanding competition conditions for the fourth day running. Having completed the official competition in record time, the crowds on the beach were hungry for more action from the world’s most radical wave sailors.

The sailors were swiftly organized into heats of around twenty sailors and allocated twenty minutes perform their most insane stunts. During that time the judges were looking for the most radical wave ride or the highest most impressive aerial maneuver.

Men’s Fleet

Heat 1

Lenny opened the heat with a super-fast backside 360, shortly followed by a succession of takas from Seadi and Voget. Voget picked up a huge wave out the back and quickly secured his lead in the heat with a perfectly timed wave 360. Not wanting to miss out on the opportunity of a life-time Fernandez Lopez stole the show on the jumping front pulling the first double forward loop of the day. Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne) demonstrated his incredible cut backs on the largest waves of the heat and Francisco Casas Garcia (Starboard / MFC) spent the majority of the heat in the air with his super clean stalled forward loops.

Heat 2

With just twenty minutes to impress the judges, the second men’s heat exploded into action seeing new boy to the tour Lewis spin around a super risky taka on the steepest section of a wave to earn him early points from the judges. Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / North / AL 360) floated around a backloop but was shortly upstaged by Volwater’s perfectly executed one hand and one footed backloop. Campello picked up two waves and rotated around smooth takas in front of the judges. The action really picked up when Browne flew around a double forward loop, followed by Campello, Volwater, Swift and Martin Ten Hoeve (Point-7) with their own. The heat finished with a final flurry of action as the sailors went for wave 360s, backloops and pushloop in the closing seconds.

Women’s Fleet

Super consistent Jaggi opened the women’s heat will a dry forward loop, closely followed by Japan’s Waka Nishida and Iballa, Iballa continued her dominance in the heat landing backloops and a stalled forward. Tsape was a close rival landing a pushloop off a steep ramp. On the wave front, Beenen clocked up some solid turns however Jaggi picked up the set wave and rode it all the way to the inside blowing the judges away with her slick turns.

Sunrise over El Médano

2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup, Planet Win 365 – Day six: The world’s most radical wave sailors descend on the Siam Water Park to show case their skills on the radical rides.

Lighter winds and smaller waves were forecast for the sixth day in Tenerife, providing the sailors with the perfect opportunity to have a day of rest and relaxation.

However with an invitation to the legendary Siam Water Park it proved difficult for many of the sailors to say no. Siam Water Park opened the doors to seventy of the elite sailors and their guests to spend the afternoon riding their awesome rides or to sit and soak up the sun by the pool.

The afternoon also provided the super-session winner’s the perfect opportunity to claim their prize of a two-hour private surfing session in the incredible artificial wave pool.

Siam Park boasts the largest artificial wave in the world reaching a record 3 meters high. The wave pool is fully customizable allowing the operator to decide whether the wave is a left or right-hander and choose the size of the waves.

With a group of the world’s most competitive windsurfers it wasn’t long before the sailors were charging around the pool in a bid to outdo each other.

Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC) and Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) proved that they weren’t just windsurfing talents tearing up the artificial wave with their slick top turns.

After a few practice run’s Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) and Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) ripped the wave to pieces for the crowds.

Wave of the Day

The wave of the day has to go to Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) as he brought the fluidity from his windsurfing into the wave pool, working the wave with a clean set of linked turns all the way to the shoreline.

This evening the sailors will be treated to mountain meal to re-fuel after an action packed day.

2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup, Planet Win 365 – Day five: The El Medano wind machine continues to blow the sailors minds and the PWA catch up with event organizer Dany Bruch.

El Medano served up another helping of epic conditions, allowing the sailors to enjoy the wind and waves outside of the competition environment. With so many outstanding sailors on the water the crowds on the beach were treated to an extravaganza of massive aerials and powerful wave rides.

The PWA managed to track down the busiest man in Tenerife for a brief interview, El Medano wave king and event organizer, Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL360).

PWA: Congratulations on a fantastic event Dany, what has been your favorite moment?

Bruch: “I was so happy when I saw the first heat running, it was amazing to see all the people on the beach and have perfect conditions, from that moment the event was a success for me. I felt quite emotional, I have been working for months to organize this event, so I am really happy everything came together.”

PWA: It’s a big challenge to take on, what was your initial motivation to organize the event?

Bruch: “I wanted to show everyone that Tenerife has some amazing windsurfing spots, the last time there was a competition here it was 15 years ago. In that time the number of windsurfers that come to the island has halved and the majority of the new generation of wave sailors haven’t sailed here. I think having the competition here will really bring people to the island to enjoy the conditions, hopefully I won’t regret it and it won’t get too busy.”

PWA: How have you balanced running the event and competing?

Bruch: “It took me a while to dial into the competition; I was all over the place on the first day trying to put the finishing touches onto the event site. Once all of that was done I was able to relax and really think about the competition.”

PWA: What kit have you been using?

Bruch: “I have been using my 5.0m in the finals and my 82 litre starboard quad, I am really happy with the set-up, it works really well.”

PWA: You finished second place overall and sailed an amazing set of heats to make it there, do you think it’s useful to have a bit of local knowledge?

Bruch: “It is really useful to know the spot, especially where the rocks are and how the wave forms. You could see a lot of the local riders doing really well, especially Alex Mussolini in the double elimination. I think a lot of the sailors will come here to train before the competition next year.”

PWA: Your in fifth place overall at the moment, what are you plans between here and the next wave contest in Denmark?

Bruch: “I need to recover first. The summer season has started here in Tenerife now, so there should be a lot of wind and waves until August. I will be training a lot and trying to keep fit. I haven’t been able to train much this year because of my knee injury, it is great to be back in the water and sailing.”

PWA: Which move will you be training the hardest?

Bruch: “I would like to train my double forward loops so they’re a little faster, hopefully the conditions will be good for them, I only need to do 100 or 200 more and they will be perfect.”

PWA: Congratulations again Dany, thank you for your time, any final words?

Bruch: “I am super happy with how everything went, the conditions were perfect and everyone is really pleased to have the PWA here, I can’t wait for next year already.”

This evening the sailors will be treated to a Japanese sushi feast at one of the local restaurants in El Medano town centre.

Ricardo Campello one-handed, one-footed forward loop

2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup – Day four: The Super-session witnessed a frenzy of gravity defying jumps and crisp cut backs from the men and women’s wave fleet.

The wind and waves continued to hammer El Medano’s coastline, providing outstanding competition conditions for the fourth day running. Having completed the official competition in record time, the crowds on the beach were hungry for more action from the world’s most radical wave sailors. After a gentle morning spent relaxing in the sun it was announced the super session would commence at 1pm.

The sailors were swiftly organized into heats of around twenty sailors and allocated twenty minutes perform their most insane stunts. During that time the judges were looking for the most radical wave ride or the highest most impressive aerial maneuver.

With a ten passes into the legendary Siam Water Park (famed for its artificial surf wave) up for grabs, the sailors hit the water and furiously went about launching into their most extreme tricks in order to outdo each other.

Men’s Fleet

Heat 1

Kai Lenny (Naish / Naish) opened the heat with a super-fast backside 360, shortly followed by a succession of takas from Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) and Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC). Voget picked up a huge wave out the back and quickly secured his lead in the heat with a perfectly timed wave 360. Not wanting to miss out on the opportunity of a life-time Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North / MFC) stole the show on the jumping front pulling the first double forward loop of the day. Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne) demonstrated his incredible cut backs on the largest waves of the heat and Francisco Casas Garcia (Starboard / MFC) spent the majority of the heat in the air with his super clean stalled forward loops.

Heat 2

With just twenty minutes to impress the judges, the second men’s heat exploded into action seeing new boy to the tour Adam Lewis (Starboard / Point-7) spin around a super risky taka on the steepest section of a wave to earn him early points from the judges. Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / North / AL 360) floated around a backloop but was shortly upstaged by Peter Volwater’s (Fanatic / MauiSails) perfectly executed one hand and one footed backloop. Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) picked up two waves and rotated around smooth takas in front of the judges. The action really picked up when Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC) flew around a double forward loop, followed by Campello, Volwater, Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde) and Martin Ten Hoeve (Point-7) with their own. The heat finished with a final flurry of action as the sailors went for wave 360’s, backloops and pushloop in the closing seconds.

Women’s Fleet

Super consistent Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) opened the women’s heat will a dry forward loop, closely followed by Japan’s Waka Nishida and Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne). Iballa continued her dominance in the heat landing backloops and a stalled forward. Evi Tsape (F2 / North) was a close rival landing a pushloop off a steep ramp. On the wave front, Amanda Beenen (Dakine) clocked up some solid turns however Jaggi picked up the set wave and rode it all the way to the inside blowing the judges away with her slick turns.

With the results announced and the prizes awarded, the sailors were released for the day in order to relax and catch up on sleep after last night’s epic beach party.

2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup – Day three: A dramatic end to the double elimination sees Daida Ruano Moreno and Philip Koster battle through the super-finals to confirm their places as event winners.

The event site was flooded with spectators descending from all over Tenerife to catch a glimpse of the world’s finest wave sailors battle it out for the event victory.

With only four reaming heats left in the men’s double elimination and three in the women’s, the judges delayed the start of competition until 11am, in order to make the best use of the rising tide. When the green flag was raised the conditions were perfect allowing the sailors to burst into action and execute their maneuvers with faultless precision.

Men’s Fleet

The men’s fleet kicked the day off with Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra) taking on his close friend Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL 360). Mussolini was hoping to continue with his rampage through the double elimination, however Bruch had other plans. Bruch opened the heat with a one-footed backloop, then picked up a wave and pulled three vertical top turns. Mussolini secured a solid wave score-nailing wave 360 but he was unable to find a jump ramp allowing Bruch to take the win with a 4-1 decision from the judges.

Ecstatic with his first win Bruch relaxed into his heat against Brazil’s Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde). Once again the local favorite opened with a monster backloop and then made sure he ripped apart the biggest sets, whereas Seadi wasted a large part of the heat searching earnestly for a suitable ramp. Bruch went about landing wave 360’s and well-timed cut backs to provide him with the advantage. With little time left on the clock Seadi began to panic and he started to hunt for waves to ride. Luck was on his ride and he managed to score the best wave in the heat with a backside 360 and three swift turns however it was too little too late and Bruch advanced.

Bruch then went on to challenge Australian wave ripper Jaeger Stone (Severne) to decide who would advance into the final. Bruch was really coming into his own by heat fifty, pulling super aggressive cut backs and sending walls of spray all over the place. Stone was selecting big waves and dominating his first turn but struggling to follow it up with a further maneuver. Consistent Bruch took full advantage of his local knowledge to pull some slick turns on the best waves, allowing him to advance in the final to face Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine).

Men’s Final

The opening jumps saw Koster rotate around a super-fast double forward loop, and Bruch drop out the sky on two pushloop attempts. Unhappy with his aerials Bruch stormed out the back of the arena and picked up an enormous wave, the local sailor continued with his wave rides throughout the heat outdoing himself with every turn. Koster was struggling to stay upright after his initial smacks. Koster held the advantage with the jumps up until the final minute when Bruch launched into a one-footed backloop. Bruch’s hard work paid off and he was awarded the win with a 2-1 decision from the judges.

Having taken down the event leader, Bruch now had to take him on again in a super-final to decide once and for all who would be crowned the event winner.

Men’s Super-final

The duo took to the water once again, enraged by his earlier performance Koster flew around his opening double forward loop landing bolt upright. The sailors picked up waves, but both fell off the back on initiating their maneuvers. Bruch picked up a big wave and dominated it all the way to the beach, Koster replied with his own equally impressive wave. Determined to take the win Koster launched into his second double forward loop but this time landed planning. The judges were amazed by his performance and awarded him the highest scores. Koster was announced the overall event winner at the prizing giving on the beach.

“I feel amazing, it feels like a dream come true, I didn’t think that I had won. I was really angry in the water because I didn’t catch a really big wave so I knew I would have to do something really big. I wanted to try a triple forward but I landed a planning double forward instead. It was a really tough final, Dany Bruch was sailing really well his wave rides are amazing, I couldn’t feel better.”

Women’s Fleet

First to take to the water was Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne) against Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne). The judges witnessed a particularly close heat between the sailors; both of them made use of their experience and selected the finest waves that rolled through. Jaggi held the advantage with her jumps for the majority of the heat; however Alonso’s vertical cut backs ensured her rides were awarded higher points. Alonso sneaked through the initial heat of the day with a 3-2 decision from the judges.

Alonso moved on to face Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne). Alonso continued with her incredible wave riding, however the might of Iballa, was too much to fend off as she landed a colossal back loop and selected two perfect waves to ride directly in front of the judges. The doors to the Moreno final were kept closed for Alonso as Iballa advanced.

Women’s Final

The twin’s Iballa and Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne), took centre stage once again and went to work displaying their most impressive moves. Iballa was fired up from her previous win and landed a clean backloop providing her with the advantage. She then went on to select the largest waves in the heat and take the biggest risks, working them frontside all the way to the inside, while Daida was playing it safe pulling her most consistent jumps and tackling the tamer waves upwind. Iballa was awarded for her efforts with the heat win, meaning the pair would have to enter the super final to decide who would take the event title.

Women’s Super-final

Having seen her sister’s tactics Daida was ready for battle, she opened the heat a smooth wave ride providing her with the early advantage. Eager to land a backloop Iballa went for six attempts but the ramps weren’t launching her high enough. Daida continued with her wave riding in front of the judges and then secured the heat win with a perfect backloop in the closing seconds.

The victors were awarded their crowns in front of a large crowd on the beach shortly after.

Having completed the double elimination in record time the competitors were released for the day. That does not conclude the action in Tenerife, the will be plenty more adrenaline filled days on their way, in the form of super sessions and such like. 2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup – Day two: El Medano cements its name as a world class windsurfing location as incredible conditions power Philip Koster and Daida Ruano Moreno to into first place and allow the majority of the double elimination to be completed.

Tenerife delivered outstanding conditions throughout the second day of the competition. Winds reaching up to twenty-five knots and mast high waves ensured the action was amazing and the world’s elite wave sailors were able to reach astronomical heights with their aerial acrobatics, and rip the waves to pieces with their radical turns.

Head judge Duncan Coombs wasted no time in announcing the heats would be twelve minutes long and the best jump, and two wave rides would count towards the sailors overall scores. The action kicked off at 9:30am sharp from women’s heat 21.

Women’s Fleet

The sister’s Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) and Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) dominated heats 21, 22 and 23 defeating Fanny Aubet (JP / NeilPryde), Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne), Laure Treboux (Fanatic / North) and Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) respectively to earn them entry into the winner’s final.

Jaggi and Alonso were left to battle each other for valuable third place in the loser’s final. Jaggi opened the heat with her trademark forward loop, whilst Nayra focused on her super smooth wave riding. Alonso took the advantage in the final few minutes of the heat, landing a clean forward loop and selecting a huge wave to ride all the way to the inside, securing her third place finish.

Women’s Final

Tenerife witnessed a familiar sight on the PWA world tour, as the Moreno twins went head to head in the final. Iballa held the advantage in the opening few minutes of the heat, landing a stalled forward and then moving quickly onto a large wave to pull three aggressive turns. Both twins displayed an exceptional level of control of their equipment and made use of the whole competition area to land the largest jumps and select the finest waves. After her initial backloop crash, Daida pulled her performance back, picking out a mast high wave and landing two frontside aerials. She then focused on her jumps and landed an enormous stalled forward loop to take the victory.

Men’s Fleet

Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine) kicked off the men’s heats with a colossal double forward loop to provide him with an early advantage over his opponent Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde). Meanwhile Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) put a stop to Dario Ojeda’s (Tabou / Simmer / MFC / Dakine) quest in the single with his slick wave riding.

On the other side of the elimination local El Medano wave rider Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL 360 ) made use of his local knowledge to defeat Brit Ross Williams (Tabou /Gaastra). In the first major upset of the day Australian high flier Jaeger Stone (Severne) amazed the judges with his distinctive top turns and control on the waves to sail passed the 2010 wave champion Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North / MFC).

Stone and Koster continued with their rampaged in heat 23, both sailors excelled on the waves taking down Seadi and Bruch, landing them a well-earned position in the winner’s final.

Men’s Final

The tide was at the optimum height for the men’s winners’ final allowing mast high waves to roll into the competition area. The sailors opened the heat with huge jumps, Koster landed a mammoth stalled double forward loop and Stone stuck a tweaked pushloop. With a jump in the bag the sailors focused their attention on to wave riding. Stone continued to wow the judges, pulling vertical top turns and two aerials on one colossal wave. Koster replied with an aggressive cut back sending a huge wall of spray into the air and then turning straight into a taka. Confident with his performance Koster entertained the crowds with a one handed and one footed backloop in the closing minutes of the heat. Koster was awarded the single elimination win at the awards ceremony on the beach.

Double elimination

Eager to take advantage of the epic conditions the judges continued directly into the double elimination providing the sailors with the opportunity to cover up any mistakes made in the single and boosts their overall scores.

Men’s Fleet

The standout sailor from the men’s fleet was Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra). The exceptionally talented Spaniard sailed through seven incredible heats to earn himself a position in the top six. Mussolini’s ability to select the finest waves and perform perfect wave 360’s and taka’s saw him defeat Camille Juban (Gun / MFC), Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC), Ben Proffitt (Simmer), 2010 wave champion Fernandez Lopez, the wild Moroccan Boujmaa Guilloul (Starboard / Severne / Mystic) and finally a really close heat against Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC).

In the heat against Campello, the Venezuelan launched into action with a double forward loop, and quickly moved on to work on his wave scores, Mussolini struggled to find a ramp to launch off but stole the show with his wave riding. With no jump points, Mussolini was at a disadvantage throughout the heat, it came down to the final minute before he landed a perfect one handed and one footed backloop to secure the victory with a 5-0 decision from the judges.

The double elimination also observed Marcilio Browne (Fanatic / North / MFC), Kenneth Danielsen (F2 / Simmer / MFC / Mystic) and ex-wave champ Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne), dominate in their opening three heats of the double elimination earning them all thirteen place finishes.

The wild Moroccan Guilloul earned himself his highest ever finish in a PWA competition, working his way through three heats to raise his position to seventh. Guilloul impressed the judges with his super tweaked pushloops and his relaxed wave style on the wave.

Wave of the Day

The highest scoring wave of the whole competition came early in the double elimination from Mussolini in his heat against Juban. Mussolini spotted the set wave early on, and made sure he was in the right place to pick it up. As the wave built up, Mussolini timed his move to perfection launching into a wave 360 that sent him three foot above the lip; he landed planing back down the wave face. The judges award Mussolini with straight ten’s for his amazing maneuver.

Women’s Fleet

The women’s fleet witnessed Alice Arutkin (Starboard / North) and Japan’s Waka Nishida advance through their initial heats against Julia Meijer and Amanda Beenen (Dakine).

Aubet’s forward in the second round put a stop to Arutkin’s further developments in the double elimination and Treboux dominated in her heat against Nishida.

Treboux continued with her rampage in the double elimination playing her consistent card to defeat Germany’s Heike Reimann (Hot Sails) and Eva Tsape (F2 / North). Treboux will advance to face Jaggi in the battle for 5th place tomorrow morning.

Adam Lewis on fire in the first round

2011 PWA Tenerife World Cup – Day one: Mast high waves and twenty knots of wind provide the crowd’s on Tenerife shores with down the line gold and enormous aerials from the world’s most radical wave sailors.

Howling winds and glassy waves thrashed Tenerife’s coast line for the opening day of the PWA world cup, ensuring the event site was buzzing with excitement as the action unfolded.

With perfect conditions teasing the sailors, the mammoth fleet of 46 men and 14 women were eager to hurry through the formalities of registration and kick the proceedings off at 1:30pm. A seamless operation run by head judge Duncan Coombs saw the majority of the men and women’s single elimination completed in an adrenaline filled afternoon.

Men’s Fleet

An efficient set of heats saw the opening round of the men’s single elimination completed swiftly, and many of the big names make it past their initial adversaries. However it wasn’t without its dramas.

Camille Juban (Gun / MFC) lost out in the second heat of the day due to a timing error, meaning he missed nine minutes of his heat and allowed his opponent, Frederico Infantino (AL 360 / Dakine) to slip through into the second round.

Brit, Adam Lewis (Starboard / Point-7) made his debut appearance on the PWA world tour, defeating US wave demon Kai Lenny (Naish / Naish). Lewis amazed the judges with his super late smacks on the wave, allowing him to pass through his first high pressure heat.

The Tenerife world cup witnessed Ex wave world champion Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne) return to the competition scene, and be paired against fellow Australian wave ripper Jaeger Stone (Severne). Both sailors performed incredible aerial maneuvers and it came down to the wave riding to separate the pair. McKercher held out for the set wave out the back and clocked up a number of smooth turns, but it wasn’t enough to fend off Stone and his new school moves.

Round two saw many of the top seeded sailors defend their positions and advance into the top sixteen. Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde) ripped apart every wave to advance past high flying Aleix Sanllehy. Philip Koster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Dakine) proved that he wasn’t just a one location wonder, destroying Albert Pijoan with his huge stunts and El Medano wave king Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL 360) made use of his local knowledge to take down Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / North / AL360).

Lewis continued with his exceptional sailing in a close heat against John Skye (RRD / RRD). The sailors powered from wave to wave with stalled forwards in between, and they appeared to be fairly evenly matched, until a smooth taka from Skye saw him snatch the victory by just half a point.

Three outstanding sailors, Jules Denel (Exocet), Peter Volwater (Fanatic / MauiSails) and local hot shot Scotto Valter (Fanatic / AL 360 / Mystic), were on fine form as they sailed through their second heat of the day and into the third round.

As the men entered the final round of the day the tide was dropping rapidly and the wave were few and far between. The sailors had to plan their every move in order to maximize their maneuvers.

Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Simmer / Dakine / MFC) looked to be on a high after his third place finish in Pozo, putting a stop to Volwater’s advances. Aggressive wave riding from Brazil’s Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) made sure the face of PWA TV Ben Proffitt (Simmer) returned back to his commentary booth and Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) suffered at the hands of Ross Williams (Tabou /Gaastra).

The men’s heat will pick up the action from heat 21 and 22 tomorrow; the sailors will be unleashing their most daring moves to decide who will make it into the top four.

Wave of the Day

Victor Fernandez Lopez (Fanatic / North) claimed the highest scoring wave of the day in his heat against Jose Romero (JP / NeilPryde). Romero was nowhere to be seen when the heat was running, allowing Fernandez Lopez to relax and go for his biggest moves. Fernandez Lopez spotted the set wave and went about pulling two astounding vertical cuts backs and a huge aerial off the lip. The judges were blown away by his performance and awarded him two 9’s and an 8.

Women’s Fleet

The women took to wave arena as the tide was at its lowest, making the conditions particularly tough. The fleet had to particularly tactful during their heats to select the best waves and avoid the rocks.

Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) opened the afternoon with an enormous forward loop, keen to prove to her competitors that she meant business. Jaggi went on to defeat her opponent Julia Meijer, with a well-chosen wave enabling her to pull three smooth frontside turns.

Eva Oude Ophius (Naish / Naish) sailed her way to victory passed Alice Arutkin (Starboard / North) with a clean set of wave rides and a forward loop of her own.

First to fall victim to the rocks was Heike Reimann (Hot Sails) in her heat against Fanny Aubet (JP / NeilPryde). Both sailors focused on their wave riding which saw them quickly lose ground downwind. Aubet made a narrow escape over the rocks; however Reimann wasn’t quite so lucky, catching her fin and rendering her unable to complete the heat and therefore granting Aubet an easy pass into the next round.

The most impressive wave riding in the women’s fleet came from Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne). Alonso stole the show with a display of aggressive cut backs and accurate wave selection guaranteeing the judges awarded her with maximal points and her entry into the second round.

The women’s fleet will pick up the action tomorrow from heat 21 and 22 where the wave ripping twins Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) and Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) will take centre stage to defend their positions at the top of the overall rankings

The show must go on.

After a mammoth afternoon on the water and deteriorating conditions making the heats particularly tough, the sailors were released at 7:30pm. The action will continue tomorrow morning, the skippers meeting is planned for 8:30am with a first possible start to competition at 9:00am.
