SAS is encouraging community volunteers to lead their own beach cleans as part of the SAS Big Spring Beach Clean, offering advice, equipment and promotional materials to ensure safe and successful events.
Sadly, the springtime reveals the true severity of the marine litter crisis. The impact of winter storms and in absence of seasonal council beach cleaning operations, the accumulation of litter can be truly shocking. Typical examples of marine litter include rubbish from beach users, sewage-related debris, waste from commercial shipping, nets and fish boxes from fishing vessels and medical waste.

Marine litter is thought to reduce the resiliance of marine ecosystems and add to other human impacts on the marine environment such as inappropriate development, sewage and agricultural pollution, climate change and ocean acidification (Derraik, 2002). Marine litter can also dramatically affect quality of life, recreational opportunities and aesthetic value. The majority of beach users rank cleanliness as a priority in chosing their destination. A 2005 ENCAMS study showed that 97% of people avoided beaches with 10 or more large litter items per metre.

Hugo Tagholm, SAS Executive Director says: “The marine litter crisis is a major issue hitting beautiful beaches right around the UK. The SAS Big Spring Beach Clean empowers communities and educates the public on how we can all play our part in turning the tide of marine litter.”

British environmental organisation, The Blue Project, speak with Olympic medalist and Blue Ambassador Bryony Shaw about her love of windsurfing and protecting the waters she uses.

The Blue Project uses sport, adventure and digital media to connect more people to our blue environment. Jacques Cousteau once said that “People protect what they love” so our mission is to develop innovative ways to encourage greater care of our blue environment.

Our journey started with a small group of people who derive a large part of their inspiration from competing and working in the natural environment. We decided to share their stories, images and content with a wider audience and set up the Blue Project as a communications outreach programme.

In 2009, we launched the Blue Mile as a mass-participation event designed to connect more people and raise funds to support WWF’s marine and freshwater programme – www.theblueproject.org.

The Interview

Bryony Shaw. Credit Skandia Team GBR.

How does your sport connect you to the natural environment and how does that environment continually motivate and inspire you to achieve goals – sporting and other life goals?

I spend my sporting life travelling to beaches and harbours around the world, following the sun and winds to compete at Olympic Class Windsurfing Events. Locals often describe how trade winds get disturbed “It’s never usually like this!” they say. I revisit the same venues each year on the World Tour and you get sensitive to the ever-changing winds and temperatures. This connection to my natural environment helps me really appreciate truly beautiful places, not just socially or from a tourist perspective, but with regards to what the coastline can offer and the natural features that make it unique. I feel lucky that I can enjoy this fulfilled life with so many experiences: like humid training runs along a Brazillian beach at sunset with pink storm clouds over the mountains. Even when inland I connect with coastal wind conditions by watching trees and clouds, I get motivated to get down to the beach and go windsurfing, taking advantage of what nature offers daily rather than letting it just pass by unnoticed.

What has your sport, and experiences through it, taught you about your natural environment?

Windsurfing has given me a heightened sense of trade winds and water temperatures; how clean the water is at different venues around the world, according to its colour, clarity and diversity of sealife. Travelling gives me an insight into how natural it is that climates change, like when we get snow in the UK that we didn’t get for 18 years, or tropical continents get a year of dramatically increased stormy rainfall. But as long as that as individuals we maintain awareness and respect for it, nature has it’s own methods of repair.

Bryony Shaw. Image credit Richard Langdon/Skandia Team GBR

Sport is intimately connected to nature and a healthy environment is necessary for a healthy planet. By participating in your sport, have you encountered anything that’s truly shocked you about the impact human activity is having on the natural environment?

My sport has gifted me with a connection to my environment, which gives me passion to increase awareness to stop using the ocean as a waste ground, as all water users are directly affected, wildlife and humans. Polluted local areas such as the Olympic waters in Qingdao, China made headlines because the over-grown algae blooms affected our competition area. And a sailor who swallowed harbour water got a body-damaging parasite. But I hope that the Chinese waste management in this area has not just gone back to its old ways, and consideration for the local people and waterlife is maintained not just when under the world media spotlight…

Bryony Shaw, Pre-Olympic Test Event 2007.

If you were to motivate people (on a local, national, or international level) on one particular environmental issue, what would it be?

The environmental issues that I feel most strongly about are waste management, and the consideration of whether your purchases and activities truly have a small carbon footprint. For example the current craze is to have an electric car. But where does that electricity come from?? Waste from most forms of energy production is a global economic issue that will take time and money to educate and ultimately change. Your car is more “green” from cradle to grave if its body parts are locally sourced and can be easily disposed of, not what fuel it runs off. Like a truck made mostly of metal, where is parts and production are all from one country, uses less natural resources than an electric car that has so many foreign plastic body parts. It is important to consider what is truly recyclable, therefore is not contributing to landfill or pollution into rivers, and not just follow fashionable consumer trends!!

Bryony racing in front of the crowds on the Nothe course at the 2012 Olympics.

What have you actively changed in your day to day living behaviour and choices, including how you go-about your sport that makes a positive difference to the health of our planet?

My sporting activities, although a healthy and active lifestyle, do have quite a sizeable carbon footprint. In recent years I have taken advantage of the improved accessibility of European travel by budget airlines with their many route destinations, I can fly very close to most of my competition venues so travel is less stressful and training time is greatly improved. In addition to this my coach will also tow his coach boat around the European venues.

What motivated you to become involved with The BLUE Climate and Oceans Project?

Being involved with BLUE gives me the opportunity to increase the awareness of windsurfing within the environmental community. The worldwide environments we encounter and how as windsurfers we are directly faced with water pollution and damaged coastlines. Windsurfing is one of the most popular watersports in the UK due to its fun, colourful, radical image and it is the most financially accessible worldwide racing sailing class. If our waters are clean and our beaches not over-developed then we are free to run professional competitions and enjoy a much-loved hobby experiencing nature’s wonders.

Bryony Shaw battling the strong winds in Weymouth. Richard Langdon/ Skandia Team GBR

What one piece of advice would you offer to encourage people into thinking proactively about a BLUE future?

For me BLUE is about active lifestyle as well as awareness. Take in your surroundings and what nature can offer. City life is sociable, but opening your eyes to coastal life can provide escape and freedom. My initial interest in watersports was my escape into nature and the thrill of wind-powered speed skimming across the ocean. This sporting connection can then bring greater lifestyle appreciation, and that get-up-n-go outlook to grab life’s opportunities and not let them float by.

A call to action – What can people do to become BLUE?

I feel it is important to introduce a BLUE attitude and provide lifestyle opportunities into schools. I tried hard aged 14 for my school in Oxford, which is far from the sea, to organize after school trips to our local reservoir for sailing and windsurfing activities. But without teacher enthusiasm the idea fell apart, so I was going there on my own motivation and my parent’s support, without my school friends. Watersports activities are very safe, accessible, educational and fun, wherever you live in the UK, so there is no reason for it not to be an option. I see the lifestyles that people in countries like New Zealand are enjoying with such a close relationship to the ocean, and it is not our UK climate that prevents this, only our attitude.

Surfers Against Sewage is delighted to announce the inaugural Return To Offender weekend on 24th and 25th November, giving the public a fantastic opportunity to challenge businesses about the marine litter crisis. Over the past 15 years the amount of marine litter washing up on UK beaches has almost doubled. The Return To Offender initiative is an activity designed to help individuals and communities confront businesses with items of litter found on UK beaches, asking them to take specific actions including:

Increasing anti-littering messaging on their products to better inform consumers about reuse, recycling and proper disposal.

Reducing the amount of packaging used for their products.

Identifying less harmful packaging options to safeguard the environment.

Supporting environmental initiatives and community activities to protect oceans and beaches.

The activity will see SAS campaigners and supporters from Land’s End to the Orkney Islands returning to manufacturers pieces of marine litter found on tidelines nationwide asking for more to be done to protect these unique environments. It will also highlight particular sources of marine litter and solutions that can contribute to the reduction of marine litter.

To get involved communities and individuals can download Return To Offender resources at www.sas.org.uk

The weekend will encourage individual beach cleans through SAS Regional Reps, SAS members, SAS supporters, SAS activists, the general public, supportive local businesses and national businesses. Most of all, SAS will actively promote individual activity of collecting just one or two items of litter from local beaches across the UK.SAS is encouraging all our supporters to take action during the weekend, becoming a part the anti-beach litter campaign.

This method of tackling the issue is a tried and tested one. Currently 5% of all litter found in the UK is from one company, Coca Cola*. Thanks to our Return To Offender campaign Coca Cola has already responded positively and made packaging changes.

SAS aims to encourage up to 1,000 individuals to get involved with the Return to Offender initiative as a result of the weekend.

SAS Beach Litter officer Dom Ferris says: “SAS’s Return To Offender initiative is a powerful reminder to manufacturers that they should do more to tackle the marine litter crisis. Please get involved with making sure your beach has a voice as part of the Return To Offender weekend.”

Surfers Against Sewage would like to thank the Patagonia Tides Foundation for their support in helping make this initiative possible.

Surfers Against Sewage

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is delighted to launch its new Regional Reps website, www.sasreps.org.uk, highlighting its newly expanded nationwide network of dedicated volunteers fighting to keep UK oceans, waves, waterways and beaches free from pollution. The interactive website also highlights key environmental issues facing Britain’s surf spots and details current SAS campaigns targeting polluters and calling for better protection for unique, precious oceans, waterways and beaches.

The team of SAS Regional Reps reaches from the farwest of Cornwall to the Orkney Islands, and includes surfers, scientists, sailors, teachers and adventurers with a common passion for our oceans and beaches. Whether it’s marine litter, contamination from combined sewer overflows, industrial malpractice or development issues, SAS Regional Reps focus on the burning environmental issues in their region, helping engage the local community to take action and deliver environmental protection.

SAS Director Hugo Tagholm says “We are very excited about expanding the SAS Regional Reps programme to help further raise the visibility, effectiveness and impact of our community projects and environmental initiatives. We are very excited to be working with EOCA & Speedo on this grassroots project to protect our beautiful beaches and coastlines. It’s inspiring to have so many talented and passionate individuals volunteering for SAS, a cause which is clearly very close to their hearts.”

SAS is also delighted to announce the recruitment of champion UK surfer Gabe Davies as Chair of the Regional Reps programme. Gabe is from Newcastle in the North East of England and is Britain’s most successful big wave surfer. He has won four British surfing titles, numerous English titles and has represented his nation at the World and European Championships.

Gabe Davies says “I am delighted to be involved with SAS’s Regional Reps programme, a fantastic network of passionate volunteers helping protect the UK’s waves, oceans and beaches for everyone to enjoy safely and sustainably. If you want to get involved with protecting your local beach or surf spot, make sure you drop your local rep a line.”

It is thanks to the support of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) and Speedo that SAS has been able to significantly expand the Regional Reps programme. Over the next 18 months Regional Reps will attend training events, deliver environmental community activities and support SAS campaigns calling for greater recognition and protection of UK beaches.

Tanya Bascombe of EOCA says: “We are thrilled to support SAS’s Regional Reps initiative. It’s brilliant seeing so many committed individuals dedicating time to protect our precious environment, delivering tangible results with the support of the local community through beach cleans and other volunteer activities.”

Mark Wyatt, UK Commercial Director of Speedo says “Speedo’s ambition is to inspire people to swim, or in fact simply enjoy being in water so we’re very proud to support SAS. We look forward to the relationship developing and of course enabling more SAS Reps to be part of something great for UK waters and the environment.”

With the howling winds that are currently blowing across the UK, you shouldn’t need an extra incentive to hit the water, but what better way is there to spend World Oceans Day than enjoying all that nature has provided.

The Ecover Blue Mile is taking place this summer, starting TODAY 8th June, which is World Oceans Day – join in with thousands of people across the UK raising vital funds to support WWF’s work safeguarding our rivers, oceans, lakes and wetlands.

Andrew Triggs-Hodge, our rowing Olympic hopeful for London 2012, said “The Ecover Blue Mile is the perfect way for us to engage with our blue environment, from our oceans to our rivers and lakes. WWF does fantastic work safeguarding these habitats and protecting the species that depend on them. Through this event we can not only begin to appreciate the watery world around us, but also support WWF’s vital work through fundraising. And even better, it gives us the perfect excuse to get fit ahead of London 2012, and do something active with friends and family.”

NaishSUP ©PPlatzer02

Ecover is encouraging the nation to feel good and get active ahead of the London 2012 Olympics whilst enjoying the natural environment at the same time. The Ecover Blue Mile is an exciting outdoor event designed to get us actively caring for our rivers, oceans, lakes and wetlands. Our blue environments are remarkable places, and without them, there would be no life on Earth – they provide us with water to drink and food to eat, and what’s more they’re home to an astounding array of fish, animal and plant life.

Feel Good Ecover.com

To celebrate our blue environment, Ecover is urging people, local communities, schools, universities, organisations and sports groups all across the UK to organise their own Ecover Blue Mile event, in return for sponsorship from family and friends. Last year over 2,000 people took part, and this year we’re asking even more people to take part. And with World Oceans Day being today, Friday 8 June, what better excuse to enjoy the blue outdoors and with the brilliant windsurfing conditions we have been blessed with today, there’s no excuse! Protecting our rivers and oceans is now more important than ever. Oceans provide a home to half the species on Earth and help regulate the climate for the rest of us.

The best thing about it is that everyone can get involved, no matter what your age or fitness. You can complete your Blue Mile any way you want: swim or surf, kayak, stand up paddle, walk or run. Simply complete a mile in, or near your favourite watery place – whether a river, sea, lido or pool. All funds raised will go towards WWF’s water projects, supporting some of the most vulnerable wildlife, places and people – both here in the UK and around the world. To take part simply register online at www.thebluemile.org and add details of your Ecover Blue Mile event to our fantastic new interactive map.

Visit www.thebluemile.org to register, download your free posters and fundraising packs and find out more about upcoming events.

Steve North reports: Four Pembrokeshire windsurfers (plus support boats) have each committed to windsurf a 30km crossing from Tenby to the Gower. The Windsurfers (in age order!) are: David Stockwell; Owen Bowen; Steve North & John Pym.

Obviously we need the right conditions (wind strength, direction and swell) but the consultation and planning are done – and now we are ready to go!

Why?

Well firstly, looking out from Tenby South beach we’ve often wondered how challenging it would be to windsurf all the way across to the thin stretch of Gower coastline you can make out on a good clear day.

Secondly, because we can do our bit for CHARITY; supporting the following great causes:

RNLI (50%) – Should need little introduction, the RNLI have saved 139,000 lives at sea since 1824!

Macmillan (30%) – Providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support for those affected by Cancer.

Tenby Surf Lifesaving Club (10%) – helping everyone enjoy Pembrokeshire beaches safely.

Liam’s Dream (10%) – A local Pembrokeshire initiative to help a young boy with Spastic Cerebral Diplegia.

And of course this is where you come in – If you feel you can help, then PLEASE donate anything you can afford.

The easiest way is online via: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/TenbytoGowerWindsurfers

Or we will accept cash or cheques!

Many thanks – wish us luck (and wind!)

The windsurfing teams from The Army, the Royal Navy and the RAF have completed the challenge they set out to achieve by windsurfing round the Isle of Wight. A combination of relay teams and solo windsurfers took up the challenge, in all 20 services personnel. Starting at 0830 on Thursday 16 September it was always going to be a tough day whatever the conditions so a force 4 wind from the West promised to test the fleets sailing skills to the limit. The beat to the first stopover at Colwell Bay was, as expected, difficult with the added pressure that the teams knew they had to get round the Needles before the tide turned against them. As a windsurfer cannot sail directly into the wind the straight-line distance of 10 nautical miles would be at least half as much again. For some this was to prove too great a task and by the time they got to stop two at Brook beach, on the southwest of the Island, the chance of getting all the way round in safety was gone.

Those who got ahead of the tide at the Needles now had the benefit of the wind (which remained a steady force 4 from the West) they also had the tide helping them along the south of the Island. This leg – approximately 20 nautical miles – passed around St Catherines Point, on route to Yaverland for a well-earned rest. For most of the fleet by this point the wind was starting to drop so a number of crews decided to fit bigger rigs to allow them to maintain speed. This no doubt helped, as they still had to go back up wind to the finish.

Windsurfing around the East of the Island was always going to be in light winds towards the East Solent heading back to Cowes and the finish. It was now late afternoon and the wind was dropping as the sun began to set. This was the time everyone had to dig in and keep going if they were to succeed.

The first entry to complete the challenge was the RAF comprising of Simon Kent, Ginge Ashmore, Mark Richards and Stu Tillbury. Next to arrive was the first pair of solo windsurfers, the RN pair Gerry Northwood and Steve Roberts.

An incredible effort and the difference in appearance of those that had completed the whole trip was clear to see. Next in was the Army pair Gareth Baker and Steve Williams who arrived as dusk was giving way to darkness, which left Jon Metcalfe as the only remaining complete navigator. He was accompanied to the finish with the final member of the Army team of Ian Beaton, Dan Scudder and Rob Hickley – completing this great challenge roughly 14 hours after it had begun, and in total darkness! A welcome drink was enjoyed by all on the beach.

Twenty windsurfers set out on the challenge, 13 finished with 5 completing the whole trip. A tremendous achievement which, added to the charitable donations, should be a great source of pride for all involved.

The support that was provided by the RIB owners, drivers and support crew was equally impressive with one boat (Poole Sea Safaris) coming from Poole at 0530 and then returning back to Poole long after dark. All generously given at no cost.

“The Forces Windsurfing Challenge certainly lived up to its name; 110miles over 11 grueling hours, it was the most demanding physical and mental challenge I have ever completed. Months of planning and organisation had not fully prepared me for the extreme highs and lows that windsurfing around the Isle of Wight would bring. I would like to thank all those who donated their time and equipment to make this fantastic event, and personal aspiration, possible. In addition, over the last few months I have been overwhelmed by public support for the forces, and their generosity to help injured servicemen who face far greater physical and mental challenges than we did everyday”.

Helly Hansen supports RNLI professionals on the UK’s beaches

Helly Hansen is proud to announce further involvement with the RNLI, by supporting the charity’s lifeguards at various beaches around the UK with a range of technical clothing specifically designed for the RNLI professionals who risk it all to keep beach visitors safe year on year.

Together with the RNLI, Helly Hansen has designed and developed products that will keep RNLI lifeguards comfortable, dry and warm in the unpredictable conditions faced throughout the year on the UK’s beaches. From serious summer heat to cold, stormy weather, Helly Hansen will keep lifeguards protected, allowing them to concentrate on saving lives.

Helly Hansen has been able to support the RNLI by using its 133 year experience of making clothing for some of the world’s harshest environments. Just as the RNLI is passionate about saving lives at sea, Helly Hansen is passionate about producing technical clothing to protect those dedicated to risking it all for their profession.

The RNLI has over 800 lifeguards patrolling over 150 of the UK’s beaches throughout the year. In 2009 the beach lifeguards saved more than 120lives and assisted over 15,000 people. It is believed that two out of three people in the UK will visit a UK beach at least once during 2010, but every year over 7,000 people find themselves in serious difficulty either in the water or on the beaches.

Key pieces of technical kit that Helly Hansen has supplied for the RNLI beach lifeguards are:

The RNLI Patrol Shirt, featuring Helly Hansen’s LIFA Stay Dry Technology, has been designed to give a comfortable and athletic fit. Using Helly Hansen’s proven LIFA material it will keep them cool in warm weather.

Fleece Jacket

For extra warmth on windy days the bright red RNLI Fleece Jacket will be visible to all those on the beach and in the water. Constructed using high quality Classic Polartec 200 fleece material, it features zipped pockets to store whistles and communication equipment.

The RNLI Jacket for lifeguards and their supervisors is made from Helly Hansen’s proven Helly Tech technology to offer professional waterproofness and breathability in all conditions.

Dinghy Smock

When the RNLI lifeguards need to jump in to action and enter the water the RNLI Dinghy Smock is a lightweight spray top that uses Helly Tech fabrics to deliver total waterproof and breathable protection. It features an adjustable PU neck opening and cuffs for a comfortable fit when in the water. The smock has been re-designed and modified in collaboration with the RNLI Lifeguards leading to improvement of the original product specifically for RNLI Lifeguard use.

George Grisley (11) from Lymington has raised £1,300 for Sport Relief, ‘Rising to the Challenge’ by windsurfing from the mainland, near Lymington to the Isle of Wight (Hamstead Ledge) and back, in total sailing 6.5 miles. The 5th April saw a Force 5-6 south-westerly and with the support of a RIB with video onboard, a headcam attached to the mast to record his journey, he set off for his challenge, taking 21 minutes to get to the IOW and 32min to return, due to the wind veering slightly southerly.

George told us: “It was brilliant, I was more scared of failing because I had raised so much money and didn’t want to let people down. The water was still really cold, I was on my 85L Young Gun with a 3.4m sail, and it was really gusty which made it quite hard work. It was such a great feeling once I had completed it and I can’t wait to think of my next windsurfing challenge. Thank you to everyone who supported me, my original target was £250 so to raise £1,300 is brilliant and hopefully through the local newspaper reports I received I have also inspired other children to get involved in windsurfing – it is such a cool sport. If anyone would like to watch my journey, go to video.mpora.com/watch/fVs9CHb8W”.
