In other news the PWA have announced their 2013 calendar, as have women’s watersports group the Butterfly Effect.

If you’re looking to improve your windsurfing skills in 2013, there are a number of clinics popping up! Ant Baker is taking an intro to wavesailing course in Maui, Laure Treboux is on hand for coaching in Perth, whilst Colin and Marco of Windsurf Coaching have announced their first clinic in Tarifa.

We have also been treated to a few amazing videos including this offering from Jersey, Mike Archer‘s last sail of 2012, Jamie Drummond in Malta and Thomas Traversa and friends in action here.

Empowering Women and Giving Back in Cabarete

Cabarete, Dominican Republic July 15, 2011. The Butterfly Effect will land in Cabarete on July 28-30th, encouraging girls and women of all ages to get out on the ocean and show the world they that can surf with the best of them. The event is fun and non-competitive, and it aims to instill self-confidence and a love for the ocean in women of all skill levels. Local and visiting women will gather on the beach of Cabarete to complete a 4km downwind ride from Cabarete Bay to Playa Encuentro. The women will be windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking or stand-up paddling. The event includes safety and stretching sessions, as well as food and gear from local sponsors, and fund-raising for local charities.

The Butterfly Effect began in Hawaii in 2007. The founder, Tatiana Howard, is an avid water woman who enjoys windsurfing, surfing, kite surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, and tow in surfing. This is the 5th year the event has taken place and the third year that Cabarete has hosted a Butterfly Effect. Since its inception, it has flown to Brazil, New Zealand, France, Hood River Oregon, Dominican Republic, Germany, Italy, Israel, Tahiti, Fiji, and Australia. The founder believes that water sports provide a healthy and fun lifestyle that give those who participate in them great happiness and self-confidence. She has been fortunate to be involved in these sports and wants to share and instill the lessons she has learned with women worldwide.

Fundraising efforts associated with the Butterfly Effect will go to the DREAM Project. The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project is a US 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides quality education for all children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic. Our butterflies will participate with some of the DREAM Project kids in a group beach cleanup within Cabarete Bay.

Registration for the event will be held at Cabarete Beach Houses on Thursday July 28th from 6:30pm–9:30pm. The event will begin at 11am on Saturday July 30th. All participants will meet at Vela Cabarete. A raffle and silent auction benefitting the event and The Dream Project will be held during the closing ceremony at Nikki Beach Cabarete on Saturday July 30th at 8pm.

Safari Lodge located on an small island off the northern tip on Fiji which hosted the worldwide water woman movement celebrating and promoting women and ocean sports.

The Butterfly Effect brings women together in a non-competitive gathering celebrating community and love of the ocean, while instilling confidence in women of all ages and skill sets.  The Fiji Butterfly Effect gives back to the local community by donating new school supplies to the local schools.  Over the years The Butterfly Effect has expanded from just doing one-day downwind events.  Now they do holiday trips (open for all intermediate riders) and clinic trips (open for all skill levels, even first timers).

The Butterfly Effect Fiji Expedition was the 2^nd trip organized, but first ever clinic trip.  Last year The Butterfly Effect went to Tahiti with intermediate to professional riders.   This year it had a completely different vibe with a wide variety of levels making everyday rewarding and full of ambition to achieve new goals. Windsurfing in Fiji was more than ideal especially being based at Safari Lodge. Safari Lodge is a great place to have all levels because of the flat water, shallow sandy bottom, warm inviting waters, and friendly faces.  When the wind picked up the ladies stepped outside of their doorstep and onto the white sand beach! There was no time wasted when the wind picked up.  The girls were constantly in the water practicing. They had great conditions the whole week with lovely winds of 15 – 20 knots. We had amazing instructors along helping out and the women improved quickly with the all day, every day water action agenda!

The upcoming one-day downwind event as well as trip option for all those who want to discover Dominican Republic will be happening August 7^th.

A worldwide water woman movement promoting women and ocean sports, The Butterfly Effect brings women together in a non-competitive gathering celebrating community and love of the ocean while instilling confidence in women of all ages and skill sets.

Novices and professionals alike joined together in support of each other, as the butterflies braved high surf advisories to windsurf, kite, stand up paddle and kayak along the North Shore of Maui. The group, initially planning to launch from Ho’okipa and land at Kanaha, adjusted launch to Sprecks due to the eight foot waves on the North Shore.

Professional athletes that participated included Ann-Marie Reichman, Annita Blanch, Junko Nagoshn, Talia Gangini, Tiffany Ward, Nayra Alonso, Tonia Farman, Tomoko Okazaki, Resi Stiegler, Tatiana Howard and many more.

The Butterfly Effect began in Hawaii in 2007 by water women, Tatiana Howard and Juliana Shelef. Since then, the founders have flown around the world to organize affiliated events in Brazil, New Zealand, France, Oregon, Germany, Tahiti, Dominican Republic and Australia, and hundreds of international women have joined the movement.

The main featured sports of The Butterfly Effect include, but are not limited to, windsurfing, stand-up paddle and kiting. Other participating sports include wake boarding, surf and kayak. The standard event agenda also includes group sessions, clinics, safety and stretching sessions, food and gear from local sponsors and fundraising for local charities.

The Butterfly Effect will be going on world tour this summer, with events being held in: Italy, Hood River (Oregon), Fiji, Dominican Republic and Brazil.

“Maui, being the home of Aloha, is the perfect base for The Butterfly Effect, an event that celebrates feminine values, camaraderie and self-empowerment rather than judging and competition,” says The Butterfly Effect founder Tatiana Howard. “Although it is an all-women event, I hope that the success and enthusiasm that each event brings will be an inspiration to all.”
