Girls On Top and RS:X To Stay For 2020 Olympics

There is still a lot of racing action going on over the winter, this weekend many of the UK’s top RS:X racers took part in a national ranking event. Tom Squires won the men’s fleet and Bryony Shaw the women’s, but with the girls showed they have the skills with Bryony and Izzy Hamilton beating many of the boys in many of the races.

The event came at the same time as it was confirmed by ISAF that the RS:X windsurfing class (and all sailing classes) will remain for 2020! This is fantastic news for windsurfing and all the Olympic racers.

The RS:X is a fantastic and all encompassing racing class, but do you think it should stick around after 2020? Or do you think it will be time to update the windsurfing class that is used at the Olympics? And why?

“To keep a good level of racing over the autumn months the RYA organise several national ranking events in Weymouth. As ours clashed with the RS:X Youth Worlds our events changed to the Youth and Masters (which I missed due to illness) and the event this past weekend.

The forecast was pretty poor for a weekend racing. On Saturday we waited around on the water in the freezing cold for three hours while the wind swung regularly through 180 degrees, unsurprisingly we got no races completed!

On Sunday we started racing at 10:30, we had a nice 10knots all day with some small shifts. We raced with the men on the 9.5m sails which was good fun and really challenging especially off the start line! It was fortunate that it was a more of a thinking day rather than a boat speed day so we beat some of the boys to the finish! In the last race Bry finished first and I was second followed by all the boys! This week I am still pushing hard in the gym getting ready for Mexico!! Plus lots of admin and buying a new RS:X board!
