Angelo Pecere, the driving force behind upcoming speedsailing documentary Ghosts Of Speed, gives us the latest on the project, including an exclusive photo gallery…

“Looking from the wooden kiosk on the beach, a beer between your fingers, your body abandoned to the thought of being in the harness lines that attach to the boom and hold you in a never-ending downwind run… Thoughts run fast and you don’t let yourself control them. They are like clouds pushed and modeled from the Trade winds.”

I wrote this from the island of three hundred volcanos, nearly two decades ago, Lanzarote, after a wave-session in the lukewarm waters of the Canaries. Today I stand here, in front of a keyboard, trying to express the emotions that led me to want to shoot this documentary about speedsurfing. I cannot find the words, I close my eyes and see the answers, but to want type them is different. You are all like me, wind addicted, you would understand if we look in the face.

My first encounter with the North Sea was during a storm in December, by the beach of IJmuiden. I stood and watched this sea that can be hazardous and dangerous without the safety of the beach. And then, to come, the beauties of the Country, its land and its lakes. Friends, surfers again, in a country that is not mine, but who love me. I’m not good with words, so will try to transform my thoughts and emotions in images, hoping for the support of the wind and these friends who share with me the design and creation of this documentary.

It’s an adventure among friends and like-minded people who share a passion for this sport. It’s a documentary that talks about the Dutch speedsurfing, these Ghosts who surf so far from usual spot, in order to find the best wind and the flattest water. It’s a documentary that talks about nature in its largeness and beauty. It’s a documentary that means sacrifices and research. It’s a documentary that screams the smell of the sea and the adrenaline in the veins.

It’s too early to go any further then just pictures at the moment, so that is all at this point, but soon they will come. We will start shooting in March/April, for now there is only a storyline finally complete, the numbers listed to schedule timelapses and stopmotions, storyboards and music. We now await for the perfect wind, as do you all.
