MAUI KOKUA CLASSIC

MAUI KOKUA CLASSIC

The Maui Kokua Classic, which will be held over 1-2 April at Ho’okipa Beach Park, is all about  windsurfing giving back to the island of Maui, to the ocean and to the youths and future of our  sport. The idea is to combine a high profile beach clean-up in conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation, run a unique youth day for the kids of Maui and budding windsurfing talents of the future and to provide an exhibition style event involving the greatest talents in the sport and judged by some of the most legendary icons to showcase some of the best that the sport has to offer.

The Beach clean up will be youth driven, but will also involve pros both young and old spending the time to fish out broken equipment from the Ocean floor that has accumulated over years of equipment breaking at Ho’okipa. The idea is to show that windsurfing is an environmentally conscious sport and that we do want to do our bit to protect and conserve the beautiful Ocean that is the playground for all our aquatic pursuits

The Youth Day will consist of a master class on competing and just surviving Ho’okipa, given by a selected group of Champions, to include Robby Naish, Jason Polakow, Levi Siver, Scott Mckercher and Josh Angulo. Once the Master class is complete, the kids will then venture out on their own, to be judged by the very Champions that were their teachers earlier in the day, in a unique open contest that will focus on pushing the sport forward, but also just on the pure fun and enjoyment of being out there in this special competitive environment.

The exhibition event will feature 16 of the most impressive talents in the sport, split into two teams of 8: a “USA” Team and a “World” Team. Each Team will elect their own Captain and then send their members out, 2 at a time to rip as hard as they can for 20 – 25 minutes, to accrue the two best possible scores that will go towards an overall team result. At the end of the day, it will be the team with the most points that winds, taking the coveted title of Maui Kokua Champions. The idea is to generate, competitive spirit, team camaraderie and intense rivalry, but above all, a fun spectacle for spectators both on the beach and watching the TV and internet. We want to showcase the incredible nature of the sport, but also how fun it is, even at its very highest level.
