Day Four of the Jeep Hawaii Pro and the contest is down to the last 16 sailors in the men’s double elimination round. They will all battle it out tomorrow (Friday) to win a place in the final against Josh Angulo.

The Ladies were released half way through the day and they will start their double elimination round first thing tomorrow.

The waves and wind were more fickle today and some heats were almost cancelled mid-afternoon. At this point Head Judge Duncan Coombes removed the need to show the judges ONE jump so all the sailors had to do was get two good waves during the 15 minute heats.

Highlights from the day

The Robby Swift (Neil Pryde, JP) comeback started well as he beat Klaas Voget (F2) and Tony Garcia but then he lost out to Cyril Moussilmani (Fanatic) who was on fire today in the waves.

In fact France had a good day today with most of the French sailors making it through to the final stages of the double elimination.

It was comeback time for the Canarian boy, Victor Fernandez (Fanatic), who made it through four heats with his sick one-handed table tops, before losing to local legend, Keith Teboul).

Anders Bringdal (Neil Pryde) had a brilliant first round heat and showed the crowds that he had not lost his competitive edge after all these years. However he couldn’t match the talents of Fabrice Beaux (Neil Pryde) who had a stunning day and is still in the competition. His next opponent is Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, MauiSails) who after a disappointing day yesterday, was determined to set the record straight and showed the crowds how to ride at Hookipa. He must be a favorite to win through the heats and take on Josh tomorrow.

Diony Guadagnino (Neil Pryde) had a better day. He was a first round loser yesterday but today he made it through to heats before losing to Japan’s Shinjo Katsushi (Naish). Now this guy was ripping today. He was really carving the board on the wave face and getting awesome cutbacks. He narrowly lost to Yann Quilfen in the fourth round but what an impact this Japanese sailor has made.

The best heat of the day was actually the last one. Alex Mussolini (Neil Pryde, JP) .v. Greg Allaway (North, Mistral) & Boujamaa Guilloul (Starboard) .v. Scott McKercher (Starboard). There were some good sets coming through and Alex got off to a good start with several tail grab aerials. Greg was riding solid and getting some decent set waves and it was real close until Alex held on to a sweet wave 360 and it was game over.

Boujamaa is a joy to film, as you know he will go for crazy moves on every run. He was pulling off all sorts of tricks at the end of his wave rides. He went for what looked like a push loop off the lip and although he didn’t land it, he must have got extra points for being innovative! Scott just didn’t find the set waves and although he rode well, getting right into the pocket of the wave, McKercher style; it wasn’t enough.

So when the men’s competition resumes tomorrow, we will start with an all-American heat: Keith Teboul .v. Josh Stone & Kevin Pritchard .v. Kai Katchadourian.

Next up will be Yann Quilfen .v. Francisco Porcella & Boujamaa Guilloul .v. Alex Mussolini (JP, Neil Pryde).

The winners of these heats then get to challenge the top 8 sailors from yesterday.

SICK MOVES of the DAY

Rush Randle’s forward off the lip and wave 360 in his first round heat against Robert Sand (F2).

Graham Ezzy’s wave riding for a teenager was stunning. This boy will win the event some day.

Victor Fernandez’s one handed ninja kick in his second heat.

Francisco Porcella’s double push loop attempt – ouch!

Alex Mussolini’s wave 360 in the last heat of the day and, of course, Guilloul’s push loop attempt off the lip in the same heat.
