Hello Josh,
First of all welcome to Point-7!! i have been sailing P7 allready for several years now and they keep on innovating. Awesome sails to be riding with!
Will you also compete and join in the GPS speedsurfing scene anytime near future? greets from Holland.
Right on, thanks everybody and special thanks to Boards ! I appreciate it. And for sure the biggest thanks to Andrea Cucchi and the Point 7 team who is allowing me to continue ill time in the sport I love !
Josh, also very happy to have you on the Team !!
Seems like Josh has left for dinner break
Hi Josh, I’m really happy to be in the team with you!!!
See soon in Reggio Calabria!
Greta.
Me too Greta… stoked see, you soon. we’ll go for that Dinner break that Don Johnson ( KK) is talking about
You sail in some pretty awesome locations, some of them are quite sharky. Do you ever get shark fear?
wanted to ask exactly the same!!!
Yeah, Im scared of sharks . don’t want to see em’ don’t want to know about em’ I never try to go too far past the surf break
So josh,, I see that you miss KK
With a screen name like KK, I think you really are KK. You’d have to be KK to choose a name like Don Johnson. For sure I miss him, he was my little rousting pal, he was the Odie to my Garfield, but we haven’t skipped a beat since he went to Fanatic, I just know he’ll be even easier to beat at the jibes this year.
Hahaha Josh gotta love ur answer. Good to have you back, mate. Already thought you’ll miss out this year! C u in reggio!
Good news, Josh has offered to carry on until 9.20 GMT to get as many of your questions answered as possible.
Thanks on behalf of everyone.
what do you think about cape town as a wave spot?
Sick…. you down there? so many options and greta place to visit!
Hey Josh, any really funny moments from your PWA Wave years? Maybe about other sailors?
Angi, you’re gonna have to hookup with us sometime for dinner or a coffee or something or visit us in our windsurf center http://www.angulocaboverde.com I got stories of myself and everybody else from way back when til now , and that conversation could go on forever…. too much funny stuff
Hi all,
Just under 10 minutes now, let’s get those last questions in and Josh will try to answer as many as possible in before he signs off.
Thanks,
Boards Online Team
Hey Josh, good luck on the new sails….when you coming back to Tiree?
I know that Andy Groom ( I’ll hold Rich Page responsible) owes me a barrel of 10 year aged scottish whiskey , with custom bottling in , I believe 2014, so maybe I’ll go then when I go to pick up my barrel of whiskey
What was it like in the days when sponsorship deals were big, how much money did professionals get a year? Will it ever go back to that? How can we make it go back to that? Thank you for your time
I don’t think it will go back there. This is along the lines of the 80′s question asked ear lie ( see below )r.,…The “good ol’ days” are RIGHT NOW !
Hi Josh! what input will you be having into the point 7 race sails now? what made you go with these guys rather than any other sail brand?
Tomas, First of all I’ll head into the program to learn ! get an idea of their thoughts, visions, goals and where best I may be able to add. I went with these guys because the interest they showed was genuine and we have similar attitudes and goals and the product is top-notch.
Hi Josh, what’s the longest you have ever been held down for in the waves? What do you do to make sure you don’t run out of air?
I got pounded bad at Jaws tow surfing many years back…. I’ve also had many many scary situations in the ocean through my life. I don’t know second amounts or anything , but my best rule of thumb is to just do my best to be in the right part of the ocean so I’m not in those situations. I consider myself pretty conservative and calculated in order to not get pounded because I know how radical the ocean can be
Hey Josh, are you riding any quads these days?
No, Ive ridden em a bit. Our quad next year instead of being a twin/ quad will change shape and become a twin/single…. personally, I just don’t get it…. why add drag ? Obviously they guys are making it work, but when I watch the videos ( and please take this with a grain of salt), I see some really ugly and unstable lines being drawn on those things. Maybe I’m just not hip ? I don’t know. But my theory nowadays is ride whatever you want. Ride what makes your session happy and easy . whatever that may be.
Is it true that you trained an Austrian slalom rider?
Not sure that I’ve “trained” an Austrian rider. I sailed a bunch with my Austrian friend Marco when he was in Cabo Verde. I may have shared some tips and his turning into a strong sailor but that’s through his own doing. I definitely would be amiss trying to take any credit there.
thanks for the reply josh. helps younger sailors for sure if they get tips by someone as experienced as you. did you ever think about doing clinics?
Hi Josh,
Angulo boards makes production boards ? is this through the Cobra factory or through your own facilities ? Also when making windsurf boards do you use pre-preg materials or dry fibre ?? Finally how would you recommend the best way is to get into the windsurf board shaping and manafacture industry ??? Many thanks and regards,
Pat
we make boards at the cobra factory using dry fibers which are applied epoxy. best way to get into would be if you have a local shaper to offer to sweep his shop and take out all the trash etc. That’s a good way to get somebody to share their experiences with you.
Thanks for the advice, all the best !
Hi all,
Apologies for that, the site was temporarily down due to a sudden increase in traffic volumes. Feel free to continue asking questions as per before.
Many thanks,
Boards Online Team
Hi Josh
Hope you well. Your recent blog post shows that you see issues within the industry. You’ve been long enough in windsurfing to have a great view and opinion especially that you’re not only a sailor/competitor but also a manufacturer/shaper. What is your honest opinion about the sport, its popularity, and future? Can it come back to its glory from the 80′s…?
JLZ, I personally don’t think it will be back to what the 80′s was. I’d like to be wrong about that. To be honest, I’m kinda past that point of over thinking all that stuff and I’m just really savoring the moneys with fellow windsurfers etc. I enjoy browsing my local forum here in New England and all the little details of just being an old-time windsurfer. That’s mixed with the adrenaline of still having the ability to compete at the highest level… so wether the 80′s will ever come back or not, I don’t know, but I have seen some nice fluoro colors on those black sails.
hey josh!
as a professional surfer, what tips would you give the young surfers out there who want to become a professional too?
Neilson, lot of tips to try and fit in this thing here. Honestly, it’s usually the kid’s of a windsurfer ( not always, but often) who may have the chance to make it. In general our parents love us so much that they’ll give us whatever we want. If we start being bad and not doing the right thing, they won’t. So basically to any kid, if you are already windsurfing, it’s because somebody is helping/ supporting you. So do the right thing and be good, study hard and try and get on the water whenever possible. If you want to get more in depth than that . I would say contact Andrea through Point7.com for info on our team academy .
sorry guys there was some crashed server or something
Hey Josh,
i really like the new design of the angulo boards!! Who made the design?
At the moment i´m working for a german windsurfing brand and would really like to work for Angulo..!
Would love to get in contact to you.
Hang loose
You can contact me through AnguloBoards.com
Are you talking about shape or graphic ?
Hey Josh,
What do you think about bringing all those new radical freestyle moves in to the wave discipline ?
Do you think it is an improvement or do you like the pure surfing style more ?
For sure it’s an improvement for places like Pozo and spots that don’t always allow for full on rails sailing. As I’m removed from the competition scene , I can better appreciate it for just being the neat looking move that it is. In competition there so many subtleties that differentiate the tricks, the style and all of it combined that I think sometimes I all gets a bit iffy, but at the end of the day…. for freesailing it’s awesome and gets people fired up and for competition , it’s raised the excitement level as well… so it’s all good !
hey Josh! what is your opinion on the freestylescene today?
and who is your favorite freestyler on the PWA??
best regards EMIL
Wow, who’s my favorite… They all are ! those kids are soo amazing. Kiri, Tonky and Taty in my opinion have the greatest mix of power and style.. Also the younger one , Bjorn. Those Bonaire kids are on another level. In Europe Steven V.B , Nicolas A., the Andy’s, they all kill it and then you have Mr. show… Gollito.. I love watching that little Johnny windsurf
Hey Josh,
Do you have any video parts planned this year?
Sean O’brien, our technical tweet meister can attest to my lack of self-promotional social media skills. I imagine I will be able to work with some friends to throw together some fun clips throughout the year, but I don’t have any Levi-Siver-esque, blow your mind projects in the planning, as once again, our main focus at this point is product development and competition. But I’m sure I’ll get a few of the Point 7 boys down to Cabo Verde and we’ll maybe throw something crazy together…?
Hey Josh!
Are you comming here to Aruba once again for the PWA Slalom?
Dylan, I’m thinking of going there next week for some training before Italy…. how’s the wind there right now ?
Hi Josh,
I sail your slalomboards (95 & 135 ltr) and I like the progressive shape of them. As an dutchie i’m also stunned by the new brand of Ron van den Berg the MxR boards with the triple step bottoms, did you checked them out an can we expect more new ideas in boardshapes or do you think everything is tuned out and we are at the end of radical developments?
Thanks for answering and enjoy riding!!!
Harco-Jan, I’ve never seen Ron’s recent shapes, but I’ve been in his shop and we’ve talked design. We were both pretty into a tri-panel bottom that my dad had did on the sumo as he had made some boards for his brother Stefan, back in the day and we both agreed on the many positive points of the try-panel bottom. Myself, I’m actually looking to have a board now that is simple, yet blazes and does all the jibing, early planing, upwind etc . that you need from competition. Jean Bouldoires did some amazing leading edge stuff together with me, for which I’ll always be grateful, but after time I changed my direction to be a little simpler. Recently , working with Dieter Jocham from Germany on race shapes, we’ve developed something special and we will just continue to tweak and tune this great base that’s been created.
what or who is inspiring you? other sailers, or also people from other sports etc.
Rob, I really love professional surfing. really like watching the live webcasts, they fire me up to have my act together. My wife pretty much inspires me, my brother Mark definitely does. You know anybody you meet that is just genuinely nice and has a heart for other people will usually inspire me one way or the other. Than you get those super gnarly 70 year old triathlon people ( like Phil Mcgain)…. they inspire me how ripped they can be at that age !
Hey Josh, well done on the new sponsors…can you tell us why you chose to live in Boston? Surely not a great place for windsurfing compared with Maui and Cape Verde?!
Yo Big Dave…. Family First…. My boy’s 7 and needed to get some good education. Logan airport is 15 mins from my house with the USA’s only direct flight to Cabo Verde. It’s 7 hours to Europe rather then the 20 from Maui. 4 hours to Aruba. Big opportunity in The SUP industry and we’ve never lived in an area like this in our lives… We really have time for us now. Our daily routine is so family focused and even though Cabo Verde has much better sailing conditions than here, here we have better gyms, sports medicine, I can get any little piece fed ex’d to me in a day from anywhere in the world. Dude, 14 years in West Africa.. we did a lot over there. It was time for a change.
Do you sometimes think about going back to maui?
Lorenz, For sure I do……. Maui is awesome ! I get a bit weirded out when I think of Hookipa as the only place to get my fix and all the hoopla, so I won’t be moving there any time soon I don’t think. But I do like to go ruffle some feathers in the line-up every now and then and for the moment, my brother Mark has it on lock-down so it’s all good !
hey congrats to the change. you will like the team! nice guys….
Thanks andre!….
You have been around the windsurfing scene for many a year…what keeps you going and enjoying the sport? What for you has been the greatest motivation?
Erik , I’ve been through many life seasons and thus had different motivational factors along the way, from wanting to prove I’m the best , to not wanting to feel the pain of losing, to wanting to pay the rent , to needing a little bit of “boys time”….. It all kind of works, but it has really been smoother when I’ve had my eyes focused on Christ, sober-minded and grounded.
Hi Josh, will you also compete on the PWA Wave Tour in 2012?
Hope all is good and glad that you’re able to compete again,
Phil
Not that I know of. I don’t know of any down the line side off show events planned, so unless one of those comes up for sure not and even if one does come up, I feel like I’ve proved a fair amount in that arena and I’m not sure if the investment to reward would be worth it. The Ego used to be be a much bigger driving force in the wave events and , that’s softened quite a bit with the accomplishments realized, family and other things going.. However, I still know how to smack it !
What event are you most looking forward to this year?
Italy, as it’s like getting thrown straight into the gladiator pit. All the boys have been training and testing all year and I am only recently “sharpening my sword”, but my hunger is a great as ever plus I will be backed by my new posse and the godfather Andrea Cucchi, so I’ll be coming in swinging !
Hi Josh,
Sick that you managed to close a new sponsorship deal!
How prepared are you for the new season and what can we expect to see from you this year? How do you realistically see your chances in the PWA slalom Tour this year?
gods speed to you
Peter, for sure I’m a little behind the 8 ball in being prepared. I was getting a bit fat over the winter, so even before the sponsorship came through I started dieting and training to slim down, mainly for my own health also with the thought that if something did come through I needed to be ready. I did organize all my boards and fins ahead of time “just in case” , so now it’s a question of getting some hours on the water. Fortunatley over here I’ll still be sailing in a full suit 5/4, so an hour in that is like 2 hours on Maui and I should catch up pretty quick… But nonetheless , it’s a marathon, not a sprint .
mostly if you are relaxed and satified you will bring the best results..
will you focus on slalom in 2012 or also attack in waves?
I’ll attack any little wave nugget that gets thrown my way and I will surely focus with Andrea and Adam on the development of the wavesails and free ride, but the racing will be my full focus for competition and I’m are we will spend a great effort on the testing of race sails as well
Aloha Josh,
Compliments on joining the P7 team, hope you do well this year! What difference will the sails make compared to Gun or Maui Sails or isn’t it more the sailor then the sail? Will an signature sail, if any comes, also have the ichtus logo in it? Is the Ichtus sign on your boards just marketing or do you really wan’t to express your love of god via the boards?
Saludos Harco
Harco-Han, by ichtus do you mean the “Jesus Fish “… I assume you do. I never knew that was the official name. The biggest reason we write Jesus Loves you on our boards with the “ichtus” is because we believe whole heartedly in that exact saying and in our family’s gesture in giving glory to HIM, we carry on a tradition that my dad started way back with his hand signature writing Jesus Loves you, because we really believe it’s due to His grace and mercy that we are forgiven our sins and the we are given so many awesome blessings in this life. As per the difference in the sail brands….. Yes, that’s the whole point. You try and align yourself not only with someody so you can say your sponsored, but so you have the development capability to create the fastest and best equipment which will give you the edge for victory. For sure the pilots gotta be on their game, but sure helps a lot when the equipment is ahead of the others.
Hey Josh! Congratulation to your new sponsor! How does it feel to be on the dark side of windsurfing?
Hi Josh,
wish you all the best….
Welcome to the dark side of windsurf
Thanks Jan….. stoked !
Hey Josh, why Point-7 ?
Silas, Point 7 is the brand that stepped it up and then basically as we got talking I just got extremely excited on the whole situation. I believe in Andrea Cucchi’s vision both for equipment and for business and also for ENJOYING what we do. Point 7 has given me a platform and support that allows me to ENJOY myself again, and no matter what level we are at in windsurf … ENJOYment is Key
