Light winds did not put off the competitors, although the freestyle competition struggled to get underway a great weekend was had by all and the slalom fleet managed a few rounds of close racing.

Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers:

“A few gusts came through which was enough to pump into a few moves but not enough to run a full heat unfortunately. Great turn out though and lovely weather! Top weekend!”

Mike Archer took part in the freestyle event and managed to score some brilliant images before the wind died.
Boards caught up with Ant Baker to find out exactly what happened at the slalom event organised by the K66 team.

We had port tack conditions at Worthing, wind from the east, which is not ideal for building a sea breeze but we were still positive the wind would come through.

Saturday morning we awoke, hoping that some of the wind from the night before would have stuck around. First thing it was relatively calm, but through the morning the wind built to approximately 13-14knots, light but solid slalom racing conditions.

A five buoy downwind course was set, this was a little tricky in the light winds but we all wanted to make the most of the conditions. We made it onto the water at about 12.30pm and started son after.

The start was a little upwind of the beach, some finding it tricky to make it to the start in time in the light winds. But the first pro heat was set to start, before having to momentarily postpone due to unforeseen circumstances, just before the green flag. Some sailors, including Weymouth winner James Dinsmore, did not see that the start had been abandoned and sailed the full race. When the race was then actually started a few minutes later, this meant that James along with some other top names could not make it back upwind in time.

The second round of the pros then took place, with myself taking the win followed closely by Simon Cofield. I was using a 9.4m Warp and 140litre board with 50cm fin, and just about finding the speed he needed to win the first round.

The pros final then took place, with some more confusion and additional riders taking part. At the first gybe mark I was in the lead, but struggled to maintain my speed over the first reach and was overtaken by Simon Cofield. Cofield kept his lead throughout the race, proving he still has the speed in light winds. I finished in second, with Starboard/Tushingham main man Paul Simmons, finishing in third.

The amateurs got through two rounds, plus the losers final, but didn’t make it to the winners final in the light winds.

BSA Worthing

Saturday night saw a great evening for all racers, with a BBQ and movie played. Unfortunately the wind did not transpire on the sunday, it picked up and generated some excitement for 10minutes but unfortunately faded as quickly as it had come in.

The next BSA event is at Aberdovey at the end of June, and the next freestyle event will be held at Herne Bay this coming weekend. Check out the full UKWA calendar http://ukwindsurfing.com/events/

Lea Spencer of Red Surf Bus and Mike George also report from the event on their own blogs.

‘The luck of the Irish’ is often spoken about, and it was certainly the case last weekend for the Irish Speedsailors, who enjoyed near perfect conditions for the second round of the Irish Speedsailing Championships.

The series is run with a theory of: ‘fixed date/flexible location’, which is decided at the last minute to ensure getting the best wind on a designated weekend. With a run of NE winds for over a week though, there was no debating which spot would be chosen: Burrow Beach in Dublin, which is one of Ireland’s fastest speed courses. Burrow had already produced the goods on a few occasions in April, and Sunday 29th May was no exception, with 25-35 knots of wind blowing down the course across mirror flat water.

Oisín's GPS tracks on the Burrow Beach Speed course

Leading the charge from the very start, was BOARDS Magazine’s Spring/Summer Annual editor – Oisín van Gelderen, who set the pace with a 44+knot run on his first time down the course. The Irish Champion knows this local spot like the back of his hand, and wasted no time in getting on the water to try and catch the ideal gust.
Using a combination of 5.5 and 4.7m Pryde RS Racing sails on his JP Speed 45, Oisín clocked 6 runs peaking over 44 knots, and a dozen more over 42s and 43s. His highest peak of 44.75knots gave him the event win, and bodes well for the rest of the years rankings.

Oisín tells us the story:
“I’m getting tired of hearing myself saying this, but the course was ALMOST perfect. The run was unbelievably flat as usual in Burrow, but the angle was still a little square, meaning we only had the really broad run at the end of the course for about 5 seconds. Down there though, just as you wind up to 44+ knots, you run out of water in a scary heartbeat, and stopping is an issue. With the wind fully NE (we had N-NE), I’m convinced the course is even faster… but hey, thats speedsailing. 50% of the art of going fast is being motivated and on the case to hunt down the ideal place and time to sail. Thats how you improve your PBs.”

Oisin van Gelderen Speedsailing at Burrow Beach

And as if to prove the point, two very unlikely faces to be seen in this part of Ireland – but certainly no strangers to strong winds – Rob Jones and Jamie Knox made the trip up from Brandon Bay to trade mast-high atlantic swell for snooker table flat-water. Both sailors were keen to break the elusive 40 knot barrier, and like many, knew that Burrow could be the place to try and achieve this. Following Oisín’s tips on how to sail the course – Rob was getting closer – with every run breaking his PB, and getting agonisingly closer to 40. Eventually the magic started to happen, and 40 was gone, and soon 41+.

Job done, and Rob’s speeds gave him 3rd overall for the event.

Rob Jones on his way to the 40 knot club.

Dublin local and Speed Championships organiser – Steve Flanagan, also looked at home on the Burrow course, with a top speed of 42.59knots giving him second overall for the event. A number of other competitors also had their fastest ever days – Cormac O’Brien joined the 40 knot club, while Gildas Bechet & Jamie Knox also broke their personal records, and went home tired but with a big smile on their faces – vowing to return the next time more prepared and ready for battle.
Commiserations must go to Burrow local Guy Molyneaux, who crashed hard at the end of the course and broke his board, extension and two ribs. OUCH :/
Get well soon Guy !

After an August spent posting Jem Hall’s seminal Wannabe a Wavesailor series into our Advanced How To section (at boards.mpora.com/how-to/advanced), during September we’ve secured a great prize from our Wave Technique Editor…

Jem Hall is offering one lucky reader a free 2-hour one-two-one personal coaching super-session. The exact date during October and precise venue on the South Coast will be on forecast, at Jem’s discretion. The winner must make themselves available for the session, and make their own way to the venue – but then, Jem will be fully dedicated to their development for a personalised 2-hour training session, fully focussed on their particular standard and goals. Find out much more about Jem at www.jemhall.com

Jem Hall has already had such a overwhelming amount of interest in his 2012 performance boosting clinics that he’s decided to release next year’s spring / summer itinerary early. Jem’s coaching weeks sell out quickly thanks to repeat business – business that’s built on his knack of providing both a fantastic holiday and ensuring that his clients improve more in one week with him than they would in an entire season by themselves. Jem’s hand-picked venues and dates provide the best chances of scoring the very finest conditions. His 2012 season kicks off in March with Marsa Alam in Egypt, then in May it’s Moulay in Morrocco for the waveheads, followed by Prasonisi on Rhodes for all levels in June and September, and in August Baja’s Punta San Carlos for pure down-the-line waveriding joy. Jem’s inimitable coaching style will unlock your true potential as he helps you take charge of your progression both during the coaching clinic and on your return. And thus Jem promises the results on which he has built his reputation. Full details available at www.jemhall.com

To be in with a chance of winning this prize, all you have to do is ‘spot the baldy’ in this picture – just tell us if Jem Hall is on the left, middle, or right of shot. The winner will be drawn at random on 1 October 2011, and contacted via the email address they supplied. By entering this competition you are agreeing for BOARDS Magazine and Jem Hall to hold your email address on a database, and you will receive e-mail newsletters as a result. Remember – focus, believe, enjoy!
