JP Twinser Wave 76 Pro (2009)

Advertised as “Kauli’s Babes”, the JP Twinsers are shaped by Werner Gnigler and “developed for side-onshore to side-offshore conditions, achieving maximum potential when they have a nice steep wave face to hang a rail into.” The 76 has the relatively narrow tail, wide nose and short length of the majority of twinsers as well as the riding-friendly single concave underwater hull shape, albeit with a hint of vee right at the tail. Like the Fanatic Twin it has high levels of rocker through the tail.

On the water:

This board is very much about riding rather than jumping (although in favourable conditions it can certainly bust out some big air). It needed marginally more wind than the competition to power up and take upwind – if you’re looking primarily for jumping and easy upwind performance choose the RWW or FSW. But if you’re looking for awesome riding… Even in the unpredictable cross-onshore conditions of El Médano we got flashes of its performance when carving very hard, fast and tight on bigger waves. It undoubtedly has the potential to carve very tight lines and work at speed in small spaces. Our tester Mark Hosegood’s expertise at keeping his boardspeed high in cross-onshore conditions was delivering him some extremely good rides on it, and exactly as JP claim, in cross / cross-offshore conditions and quality waves it would be very exciting (and not too taxing) to sail.

Fittings:

Uniformly good, as per the Real World Wave. The twinser fins are conventional style, slightly larger than average.

Overall:

Given the right conditions, the JP is probably the snappiest of all the twinsers; an awesomely tight carving, exciting and enjoyable riding board. For the competent frontside rider it’d make a great partnership with something like a FSW or faster-rockered waveboard to take care of the more onshore, lighter / iffy winds or jumping-orientated conditions, and then when you’ve got a decent breeze and goodquality waves with side / side-off wind angles, this board can offer riding potential of a type and quality that conventional boards won’t match.
